Continuing the Chateauneuf saga, we have the next door neighbour of the vaunted Chateau Rayas. Chateau de Vaudieu and Chateau Rayas are very literally separated by only 500ish metres on Google Maps. Just as their very prestigious neighbour does, this wine is made from 100% Grenache planted over sand, terraces of rolled pebbles, marls, and slopes of limestone soils. The grapes are 100% destemmed and crushed and then transferred to a concrete tank. The temperature is maintained around 25 ° C. during fermentation. The maceration lasted about 30 days, during which, pump-over and rack and return are made daily according to the tastings of their oenologist. The wine then spends 8 months in new oak half-muids of 600l. It is sort of a shame to have to drag the much more famous Chateau Rayas into the discussion of this wine since it is more than capable of standing on its own credentials; but the allure of getting something so similar in many regards to Rayas at around 1/15th of the price makes it difficult to not mention.
