I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for a good romance film. Often cookie cutter in their style and structure, there’s also usually a sweetness within them that makes them fun. (It’s this sort of simple structure that has made them the gold standard of Hallmark holiday films.) Even so, because of their emphasis on sentimentality, these films are also usually bland and inauthentic. Thankfully, even though it follows similar patterns to the rest, Sherren Lee’s Float manages to swim where others sink. Based on the novel by Kate Marchant, Float is tells the story of Waverly (Andrea Bang), a young woman who believes that she has her life figured out. With a medical residency on the horizon, she decides to take a trip to visit her aunt in a small Canadian town. But, after she meets local lifeguard, Blake (Robbie Amell), her solid plans seem suddenly shaky. Instantly attracted to one another, Blake offers to teach Waverly to swim, deepening their connection. But with the Fall fast approaching, will their newfound romance survive the Summer? Directed (and co-written) by Sherren Lee, Float carries the same sort of sweetness as other romantic dramas yet manages to keep its head above water due to the honesty of its characters. The structure may be similar but Lee never allows her characters to become stereotypes. For example, although she may have made the proverbial trek to a small town, Waverly doesn’t change directions quickly. Unlike other female protagonists in these sorts of films, she thinks through her options and wrestles with their impact on her life. The idea of running after love is appealing, but, at the same time, she wants to do so if it’s the right thing for her future. With these sort of subtle character changes, Lee keeps her characters feeling more grounded in their approach to life, even as love keeps knocking on their door. This is an epic love story of a girl falling for the attractive lifeguard who also teaches her how to swim. I remember reading this book on Wattpad back in the day and never thought in a million years that the story will be brought to life. I have to say though, some scenes in this film were quite cringey at times (I mean it is based on a teen romance story). Starring - Sebastian Stan, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jojo T. Gibbs, Andrea Bang, Dayo Okeniyi, Charlotte Le Bon, Brett Dier. This was a recommendation from my friend @helenroum Honestly the term emotional rollercoaster is used a lot, but that is exactly what this movie is. I genuinely don't think i have ever seen a movie shift like this, you would believe the first half hour and the rest are different films. But it works so well because of it. The movie is aware of it too, as the title card appears only when the movie shifts from what you think it is, to what it actually is. It catches you out and leaves you completely unsure of what to expect. It is clever too in its social commentary, mainly around the dating process between men and women and how society views women. It also will make you view those typical first date getting to know each other questions in an entirely different light once the shift happens. Another thing this movie had was actually smart side characters, which subverted horror tropes in a way that brung cheer but comedy too. Alongside the brilliant and intriguing story there was some brilliant cinematography too, a lot of good shots and an amazing soundtrack. Standouts - Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones were brilliant, there was good chemistry between them and a really mesmerising dance scene. Daisy had such emotional range here and the moment she realises what is happening to her was horrifying. Sebastian Stan too showcased his range in this and that close line between charm and darkness. But then switches that up and goes into full comedic mode as he dances around while his playlist blasts, making me laugh out loud. Bottom line, a really good film especially from a first time director in Mimi Cave, the whole film is cohesive in what it is saying about the dating process and fears attached. "Follow Dead" de John McPhail (5/10) Basé plus ou moins sur une histoire vraie, Follow Dead suit Adam, rédacteur pour un site qui se retrouve "followé" par un certain "Dear_David" dont il découvrira qu'il s'ait du fantôme d'un enfant mort... Voilà trés globalement le pitch de ce film d'horreur qui essaiera, assez vainement il faut bien le dire, de mêler une certaine détente en début de métrage et plongera ensuite dans la folie. Si l'idée n'est pas mauvaise, l'éxécution laisse, elle, à désirer. Entre un casting pas toujours convaincant (On y croise tout de même Justin Long dans un petit rôle), des idées trop en décalage avec le film, un côté horrifique trop peu présent (mais parfois assez creepy) et un final raté, le film ne parvient jamais vraiment à créer une ambiance de peur, d'effroi. Peu après, il commence à ressentir une présence sinistre chez lui… Une série d'événements de plus en plus terrifiants le persuade qu'il est hanté par l'esprit d'un jeune garçon nommé David (Cameron NICOLL). Quelles sont les intentions de David et jusqu'où ira-t-il pour se manifester ?... Ce film d'horreur inspiré de faits réels est porté par PREW et NICOLL aux côtés d'Andrea BANG, Justin LONG, René ESCOBAR Jr, Rachel WILSON, Tricia BLACK, David TOMPA ou encore Ethan HWANG. Les acteurs nous donnent un bon jeu, tandis que nous traversons quelques décors New-Yorkais avec une musique assez pesante. Ça ce sont les bons points du film. En revanche, l'intrigue est assez classique dans le genre et est plus effrayante pour l'aspect "réseaux sociaux" que pour l'esprit. Par ailleurs, l'alternance de plans clairs et de plans sombres aura hélas raison de nos yeux. Ce film n'est pas fait pour être vu au cinéma mais sur un écran télévisé en plein jour. Quel dommage ! Dans l'ensemble, "Dear David" est correct et mérite d'être vu au moins une fois. The movie is a fictional version of those events, you know Hollywood 🤩, and follows Adam as he finds himself haunted by the spirit of a boy named David. 《金家便利商店》(2016 #加拿大 #情境喜劇 #netflix 共五季) 目前看完第一季，每一集大約20-30分鐘， 滿滿的亞裔父母跟種族歧視梗，超好笑， 非常適合在吃飯時跟睡前看。 (如果會影響睡眠的人則不建議睡前看，我是放鬆看沒影響) 情境喜劇就是設定一個固定的場景，固定的主角群， 發生的一些耐人尋味的故事，當然劇情還是會稍微往前推進一下， 不過大致上就是圍繞這群人的故事。 有些人可能受不了罐頭笑聲，不過好險這部是沒有罐頭笑聲的。 比較有名的情境喜劇當然就是 《#六人行》( #Friends)(主題曲已經響起來了，啪啪啪) netflix的情境喜劇還有 《#宅男行不行》( #TheBigBangTheory) (2007共12季...)跟一些科學宅男有關，不知不覺會喜歡上裡面的腳色，最受歡迎的大概是亞斯男 #SheldonCooper (不是柯P那種亞斯)(最近netflix上映了少年謝爾頓，不過好像評價不好) 另外《#良善之地》( #TheGoodPlace)(2016共四季) 之前也看得很爽，還開始想研究哲學起來，#卡謬 的 《#薛西弗斯神話》不錯看。不過在翻了 #尼采 的 《#查拉圖斯特拉如是說》 之後就放棄了。 《#荒唐分局》( #Brooklyn99) (2013共八季)是警匪相關，也是非常適合吃飯跟睡前看，笑爛，可惜最後幾季有些固定成員開始出走，然後沒那麼好笑了。 《#廢柴聯盟》( #Community) (2009共六季)是社區大學的故事，裡面也是有亞斯的腳色，不過不像Sheldon那麼受歡迎。前兩季還蠻好笑，後來成員出走厲害，也是沒那麼好笑了。 回到《金家便利商店》，這齣非常大的特色就是亞裔(劇情是設定韓國)父母跟小孩的關係。不過滿滿的種族歧視我個人是笑很爽啦，但可能有些人會不喜歡。 「Appa」(韓文爸爸)是由 #PaulSunHyungLee 飾演，如果有看 #曼達洛人 (有訂netflix+的必看!) 可以看到他在裡面駕駛X-wings。這位光頭Appa真的是冷面笑匠，感覺就是個個性超討人厭的老爸，但不得不喜歡上他。 然後還有演了 #尚氣 的 #劉思慕 ( #SimuLiu)，裡面整個帥氣，就像 #芭比 裡的 #肯尼 形象。不過後來劉思慕本人好像有發聲抗議《金家便利商店》裡的種族歧視問題。這就是後話了。 個人覺得，看劇真的不一定要得到甚麼學到甚麼。 當然如果可以開始反思一些議題，甚至開始對科學感興趣是很好。 但看得爽，看得放鬆，看得開心自在。就好。 本來看劇就是休閒娛樂，生活已經很苦了，看劇若還得擔心自己看不懂，沒有得到甚麼，那不如睡覺。 不過《金家便利商店》雖然是笑爛，後面有些片段還是有點感人， 讓我們繼續看下去。 《#金家便利商店》 滿滿種族歧視梗：⭐⭐⭐⭐ 笑爛：⭐⭐⭐⭐ 綜合評分：⭐⭐⭐⭐(9/10) #電影評論 #AndreaBang #KimsConvenience #JeanYoon

Whenever a movie is based on something, there is always hesitation that the base work is going to be rather difficult to adapt to be something interesting for an audience to engage with as a film. However, when that film is also based on a thread of tweets, there is even more hesitation from the audience because how on earth could a film based on a series of tweets actually captivate an audience? This has been done, to my knowledge, once before with “Zola” (2020) and that turned out to be one of the wildest and creatively insane movies I’ve ever seen. With “Dear David,” John McPhail (“Anna and the Apocalypse”) brings this haunting, chilling, and downright disturbing thread to life with a cast that captivates the horrors best they can, but something lacks to get the audiences to further feel the dread and chills that the actual thread delivered to the forefront.
