FLORESTA MORTA = NOSSA MORTE (Dead forest = our death) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many people might not be aware that the big deforestation processes always begin with a new road. During my time at @altoartresidency, I could witness this process directly as big machines transformed the bumpy dirt road leading to @maririjunglelodge into a large street, ripping out all the vegetation around. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yet, this is not where it stops. These new roads will make it possible for trucks to drive there, and this is a huge change for all the people owning land in the area. Suddenly it becomes lucrative and logistically possible to destroy the forests with logging, mining or agriculture activities. In the last couple of years, the art world has become more and more aware of its environmental impact and has initiated efforts to bring sustainability to the top of its agenda. Bringing together 15 artists from around the world, 'Dear Earth' at Hayward Gallery (@hayward.gallery) explores the interdependence of ecologies and ecosystems, as well as our emotional connection with nature. The exhibition is inspired by artist Otobong Nkanga’s suggestion that ‘caring is a form of resistance’. From giant photographs made on grass to a large-scale media screen made with recycled bottles, the artworks in the show highlight ingenuity and inventiveness, as well as empathy and understanding. 48 hours of travel later and I have finally made it to our basecamp at @exploramaperu lodge in the Amazon Rainforest! I am SO EXCITED for this return trip with the @aceerfoundation and it’s already off to an awesome start with a beautiful sunset view from the canopy walkway Wednesday night, and a welcome meeting and competitive fútbol match with the Maijuna yesterday. I used to play a lot in high school but haven’t been on a pitch in over 15 years— and I was the only woman on the field! 💪 ⚽️ No pictures with the Maijuna yet, as we avoid showing up with cameras in the first couple days out of respect for the community opening their doors to us. The ethics policies we have in place for working with an indigenous community are so awesome and eye-opening— I’m sure I’ll be sharing more about that during this trip! We head off to the forest today with our awesomely knowledgeable Maijuna guides for our first trek, setting our first camera traps and I can’t wait to explore deeper in the forest! We are gatekept from taking action. We feel like we have to be perfect. We often don’t know where to start. At Stick to the Cause, our platform lets you start here. With all these urgent challenges facing our planet, we have been extremely motivated to celebrate Earth Day with the launch of this platform. You may have missed these on stories but after some recent discussions with you all about disposing of your packaging and sticker sheet leftovers I decided to get proactive! Each order will contain one of these recycling instruction postcards! Printed on recycled cardstock themselves and able to be recycled, it lists all of our packaging and how to dispose of it responsibly. Being kind to the planet is something that I care deeply about and I’ve been working towards this for a couple of years now, it’s a slow process as a small business with low order numbers it means I still have a little bit of less eco friendly packaging in my stock, but we’re starting to move to less and less of it now! I’m hoping to make a YouTube video all about the swaps I’ve changed to soon, so keep an eye out if you want recommendations!
Once a theater director told me, that I have to choose if I want to make political art or art that was interesting from an aesthetic point of view. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My answer was that I'll always try to navigate in between these poles, that I'll go for beauty AND impact, a sensual AND a transformative experience, that there should be space for reflection AND a call to action. Cette association qui fonctionne essentiellement grâce aux dons a besoin de nous aujourd'hui car elle a pour projet avec deux autres associations, de sauver de 4 tigres abandonnés dans un wagon en Argentine. Ce projet qui consiste à rapatrier ces derniers en Afrique du Sud s'avère très coûteux et je fais donc appel à vous en leur nom afin de participer à ce sauvetage, chaque pierre si petite soit elle contribuera à l'édifice. I was inspired to make these little friends because as climate emergency gets worse and the ice continues to melt these little guys are suffering the brunt of it. I saw a tweet just today about how the temperature in Antarctica has warmed to 65 degrees, it’s the warmest it has ever been in the polar caps! 🔥 We need to keep spreading awareness about our changing climate, because of us parts of the world are becoming uninhabitable and species are dying. • LightBox Expo Day 2 • - Yesterday we had another great schedule on Lightbox, following great talks by Loish, Camille Andre and a new favourite artist, Noah Clocek (@imageblockstudio), an art director and book illustrator who also works on soft pastels! Be sure to check his work, 'cause its absolutely mesmerizing and inspiring <3 Its very hard to find contemporary illustrators working on this technique, so I was really happy to find his work! I did this illustration during his live, taking inspiration from a great movie I saw last week, "The whale from Lorino", a documentary portraying a syberian village of the Chukchi people and their relatioship with the sea, warning us about climate change and the way we treat life on this planet.
