Today, 17 May marks NEC awareness day. Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating bowel disorder that mainly strikes premature babies. Born extremely prematurely, Wilfred faced many challenges in the NICU. He was tube fed and needed a ventilator to breathe. Tragically, he suffered a brain bleed and within days, doctors feared NEC had taken hold. At just six days old, Wilfred underwent surgery, having 25cm of his bowel removed and a stoma bag fitted. It was a harrowing time for his parents, Imogen and Euan, who feared for their son’s life. After 4 months in the hospital and further surgery to reverse his stoma, Wilfred finally went home, weighing 7lbs. Now 7 years old, he has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, but thankfully, he is mildly affected. Do you believe in miracles? My baby born at 26 weeks. 14 weeks before her due date. 3 months too early...see my previous posts for my journey through it. Was extremely worrying trying time. She weighed 1.5 pounds at birth and fit in my palm. This tiny skinny but beautiful baby. I pushed her out and she was born with the sac still around her so she looked like a little ball and they had to break the sac to get her out ( apparently it's good luck) they whisked her off to nicu straightaway in this big scary spaceship looking incubator and I didn't get to hold her for a long while. She spent 4 months in nicu and on oxygen all that time. Wasn't allowed to stay overnight with her so I had to leave her at hospital every night. Imagine how that felt...I also had two other children aged 1 and 4 yrs old at the time. Very tricky. She spent months in nicu and fed on my breastmilk which I expressed for her then fed her via tube into her tummy. I did this for months and was very hard to express into bottles at night without her by my side. I had to look at photos but was hard to get the drops of milk out as she was so early plus all the trauma I went through. Was also exhausted after a long day in hospital and other young kids to look after once I got home so it was trying to breastfeed but I did it. I couldn't ever cuddle her properly because she was covered in so many wires 😭 she nearly died again at 3 weeks old after catching sepsis. She lost a fingertip but luckily not her life. When they told me she would die that night my whole world crashed. She will always have a stumpy finger. When I got to bring her home she still had 9 months on home oxygen..was still tube fed into her tummy for a long time and was delayed with walking etc. She still has appts and under care of portage. Next hospital Monday. But she is alive and will turn two next week which is crazy. Swipe to see her yesterday. Busy week with Mother’s Day, and then my oldest daughters’ 8th birthday 2 days later so we went with my mum to the Australian Outback Spectacular. Such a great show not sure how I’ve lived near the Gold Coast my whole life and not been before! I’ve been struggling with intake which I knew would happen once she was born as it just removes that pressure to keep going while pregnant but I just haven’t been able to do it all, I think I just need a break to take the pressure off before trying to get my intake back up to where it was. Everything is just difficult at the moment but I knew post partum would be a struggle, it always is for me. May 15th is Kangaroo Care Awareness Day 💙 . Never take holding your baby for granted. . I missed out on holding my baby for almost 3 whole days. Since he was born so early, we had to make sure he was stable enough to be held. It's such a surreal feeling. Like he was taken away from me and all I could do was watch him behind a glass. . Kangaroo care, which involves skin-to-skin contact for at least 1 hour, is an intervention to care for premature or low birth weight infants. It helps with breastfeeding, warmth to the baby, and pain while they're receiving medical care. While kangaroo care was amazing for us, it certainly has its disadvantages. I couldn't eat, go to the bathroom, or fall asleep. I was limited to the chair, sometimes having Levi's oxygen tubes, feeding tubes, and everything else in between hooked up to me so it wouldn't sleep. I had to leave my daughter at home for hours. I couldn't rest. And sometimes our kangaroo care sessions would end sooner than I wanted because his Brady alarms would constantly go off. Some days I would miss KC all together because he was having a bad day, or he was already in the middle of a tube feed and I didn't want to disturb him. It's so scary at first, but after a few times handling him, caring for him, I felt so comfortable and loved holding my little baby. . This is when you hold your baby skin-to-skin on your chest. Kangaroo care is good for your baby. It helps keep the baby warm, is good for their heart, breathing and helps them sleep better. Typically I'm "on call" 24/7 two weeks prior to your due date up until you give birth. However, I'm a preemie mom so I know that birth happens when it's going to happen. If you call me prior to the two weeks to say you're in labor I will do everything I can to get to you as soon as possible. One day late for Mother’s Day (I’m not sure there’s a more apt metaphor for parenthood than being late for everything), I wanted to put my thoughts together about my journey into motherhood. Yesterday was spent feeling overwhelmingly grateful - for our luck that things went as well as they could have, and for the support and love we’ve received over the past year. I do know that this year has changed me, utterly and completely. I have heard that birth is also the act of giving birth to the mother, a new self, and for me that was a painful and fierce portal. On June 14, 2023, I was 25 weeks pregnant with my daughter, our first. I started feeling contractions the night before, but I didn’t know what they meant. I lost my mucus plug that morning, and was advised by my midwife to go to the hospital. There, they discovered that my cervix was completely shortened and I was 2 centimeters dilated - I was in labor. (continued in comments)

"Fundraising is our way of parenting Harry because I’m so proud to be his mum." Sarah was 26 weeks into her first pregnancy when her waters broke prematurely. She rushed to hospital, and was told her son, Harry, would need to be born via emergency c-section: "All I could think was that he was too little, not ready for this." Sarah's son, Harry, was born a few hours later, and taken straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Heartbreakingly, while in NICU, Harry had a stroke and died: "We had thought we’d have plenty of time, but we didn’t." When Sarah got pregnant again, she called our midwife helpline for support. Our midwives helped Sarah talk through her emotions, and worked on ways to cope. After an anxious pregnancy, baby Charlie was born via planned c-section in 2018. He was followed by Sebastian, who was born in 2021. To help manage her grief, Sarah turned to running, and has ran multiple half marathons for us. She says this is how she parents her son. "Most parents share photos or stories of what their kids are doing, we can’t do that with Harry, so fundraising has become our story of what he’s achieved. It’s another way of parenting him because I’m so proud to be his mum, I feel so lucky he chose us and so grateful for the short time with spent with him." Another lovely birth story sent in by a hypnobirthing client! Anne completed a hypnobirthing course with me online last year in preparation for her second baby. We did the course together online as Anne told me that even though she doesn’t live close enough to me for an in person class she wanted to work with me, after lots of research into courses I was the person she felt most comfortable with – what a huge compliment. Online also suited Anne as we did daytime sessions around her busy life of running a business and caring for her one year old. Anne had previously had a straight forward birth, but struggled post natally as her baby was born prematurely and had to stay in hospital. This time round she wanted to feel a bit more prepared in her options and have techniques to cope with things if they didn’t go to plan. Swipe to read the full story. I eventually had to make peace with his Pace. 🌟struggling internally with the many hats I wear. Trying to juggle motherhood, working full time and wanting to take Konnected Thru 22 to the next level and so much more. I had to make peace with my Pace. It will all come to full fruition in due time. 🌟At times I battle with the fact that my son schedule is consumed with more therapy and doctors appointments than sports and extra curriculum activities.
