Knowing the weight of your RV and tow vehicle helps you figure out how much weight you can bring with you and believe me it can all add up pretty fast! In order to figure all this out, you need to take your RV to a weigh station. @cat.scale is probably the easiest scales to find. They're located at many truck stops all over the U.S. We recommend using the "WEIGH MY TRUCK" Cat Scale APP. You can do everything right on the APP including pay for your weighing. It also stores your weights right on the APP. So you won't have to go inside to pay or get your weight tickets! Weighing is fairly inexpensive, usually $11-13 for the first weighing and $2-3 for each additional after that (within 24 hours). I strongly suggest you do all your weighing at the same time so that there's no changes that can throw off your results. The process slightly varies based on what type of rig you’re in. Motorhomes have it the easiest as they really only have a single weight to take; travel trailers have it the worst with 3 weighings for them; and fifth wheels have to do 2. Since we have a fifth wheel, we have to get 2 weights. One all hooked up and another of just the truck. This helps us find our pin/pay load weight on the truck. Which in our experience is the easiest weight capacity to max out. We always fuel up the truck and fill our propane tanks before weighing so we know that it will be our exact max weight. When you do your weighing, you want to be loaded exactly as you would be when traveling. That includes people and pets! . . . . If there’s one thing that’s been challenging in our 19 months of living this full-time Rv life it’s missing our family, especially our kids. We have one in college in northern Ohio and one in Florida. A few times a year sometimes feels like an eternity. I think we now understand how our parents must have felt when we got married and moved away. Sigh. But it’s wonderful to see them find their way in this world. We were blessed to see our son in March and today were able to visit our daughter at Oberlin college. Finals week! I do not miss those days. lol While it’s not a traditional life we live, we make it work, and spending time with them is so very special. We cherish every minute. Recap of Week ⇢ 2️⃣ Las Vegas, Nevada ➡️ La Verkin, Utah 🟰290 miles 2 new states for us this week! 🎉 🎲 This week we spent 3 nights in Las Vegas at Oasis RV Resort. This RV Resort has been on my bucket list for seriously YEARS. It was truly a surreal experience finally being able to check it out in person with our home on wheels! ☀️ Our days were spent soaking in the sunshine at the two resort-style pools and our nights were spent cruising the strip via Uber & on foot. 🛞Our f450, appropriately named “Black Jack”, returned to its home dealership for a handful of recalls, routine maintenance and after a bit of back and forth insisting on some brake work, we finally have better braking & are squeak-free! 🤞 🎰 While we didn’t hit it big in Vegas we sure spent so much longer than we anticipated checking out all the sights & scenes of Vegas. Until next time!👋 On Thursday we packed up and headed just a quick drive over to Utah. We spent 3 nights at Gateway Luxury RV Resort & enjoyed their grand opening event with food trucks, prizes, games, music & soaking up what we could of their gorgeous pool & hot tub (the wind was wild). 🌄Friday morning we checked off another National Park along our route, visiting nearby Zion NP. This week was jam-packed with excitement, but we are looking forward to a slower pace, maybe next week? New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia First named a protected area in 1978 as a nation river and rededicated in 2020 as a nation park and preserve, New River Gorge, National Park and preserve is a must for your bucket list! Three steps to start out your visit at this amazing Park and get a great photo of the bridge. 1️⃣ Start at the Canyon Rim Visitors Center to get your passport stamp, pick up a map, and talk to a ranger about all the things. 2️⃣ Download the NPS App. Download the New River Gorge National Park offline. Find the Fayette Station Scenic Road Tour. 3️⃣ Start your audio tour from the visitors center parking lot. Drive the Fayette Station Road, mostly one way. This takes about an hour, depending on how often you stop and how many photos you take. This drive and audio tour is beautiful. Offers amazing views and picture ops of the bridge and so much history! Campground review: KOA Journey, Ely, Nevada. This is a nice, small campground in a beautiful valley. It is about an hour away from great basin National Park and several state park recreation areas. There are several tent sites on grass and cabins throughout. There are also two covered wagons that you can rent. We stayed in a standard pull through site with 50 amp full hookups, a picnic table, and fire ring. All of the sites are mostly level and everything works well. They also have two teepee tents that they are in the process of erecting for the warmer months. The laundry was $2.25 a load to wash and dry. Last night was amazing. We went out around 10:45p to a couple locations just north of us. WOW. So hot in Central Florida today we drove two hours west to Clearwater Beach! They had a dog friendly beach which was lovely, JoJo thoroughly enjoyed herself in both the warm water and fluffy sand! However, we had hoped to have a nice meal afterwards @frenchysrockaway but were told their outside seating area was NOT dog friendly! WTF???They blamed @myclearwater but I blame them both! If you are a tourist town in a hot climate; shame on you for NOT being dog friendly!! Needless to say, we will not be returning to Clearwater Beach! In addition, all parking is prepaid to the city so we basically just donated $9.50 to them and wasted our time and money. Zion National Park. It’s early May. The temperature of the Virgin River is 44°. You will not be able to hike the Narrows Trail yet as the water flow is still too strong due to spring snow melt. However, you can take a gentle 1 mile out and 1 mile back hike along the river to the start of the Narrows. We were fortunate enough to have hiked the Narrows last year in the heat of the summer. The Gainesville-Hawthorne Bike Trail is a nature lover’s dream! It is 16 miles of smooth paths that take you through woods, lakes, over railroad tracks, and the La Chua Trail on Payne’s Prairie. Bonus: you can take a side trail and hit up a couple of breweries! It’s old Florida- see it while you can!
We love true #tikidrinks! It doesn’t get any more authentic than from the man who invented the culture, @donbeachcomber. This spot is working with his daughter to revive his brand. All the classic #tiki drinks are on the menu including: The Zombie 🧟♂️, Navy Grog, and Three Dots & a Dash to name a few. The food was incredible as well. Fort DeSoto is one of our favorite destinations. It's a true Florida gem. The campground has 238 sites, some with waterfront views, each nestled in a private setting. The park offers an abundance of natural beauty as far as the eye can see, with plenty of activities to make your stay memorable. Visitors can enjoy the historical batteries, gorgeous beaches, fishing pier, kayaking, bike trails, wildlife viewing, and nature hikes. They even have a big dog park and beach for your fur babies. The campground is a Pinellas County park so you'll need to make reservations through their website and we highly recommend you book far in advance because it fills up fast 😀 Don't just dream about adventure. Got to spend the day at Epcot yesterday; thoroughly enjoyed the Flower & Garden Festival which included amazing food & drinks. I did my research ahead of time and found the gf options which included yummy lobster! 🍄🟫 Have you ever seen a mushroom grow house? If not, a trip to @ellijaymushrooms in #Ellijay, GA is a must! So fascinating to see them growing. Shiitakes grow in a warm environment while oyster mushrooms have a colder environment that they grow in. On property is their farmhouse store where you can purchase the delicious mushrooms. Amy has an great way to sauté these fungi: 🍄 In a sauté pan, heat equal parts butter & olive oil 🍄 Add single layer of mushrooms. Do not disturb until browned. 🍄 Stir and continue to cook until all are golden brown. 🍄 Lightly drizzle all mushrooms with soy sauce. 🍄 Quick stir and serve! 🤌🏼 Do you like mushrooms? Why or why not? Roadtrip 🚘 Week 1️⃣ recap Brookings, Oregon ➡️ Barstow, California 🟰925 miles 📆Week 1 of 5 on the road is complete! Even after 5.5 years of hauling our home around, those first few days on the road we are always full of nerves. Having everything you own towing behind you can be an overwhelming feeling, yet at the same time so freeing! We left the Oregon Coast, which we’ve called home since October of last year, made it to California & out of the Redwoods. We saw Mount Shasta in North Cali which was gorgeous and visited Yosemite National Park but had to cancel our plans for Sequoia National Park because of the snowy weather. However, this gave us a much-needed rest day. 🌄The views in just this past week have been incredible! 🛞We unfortunately had a tire blowout on the RV in Sacramento. Doug noticed it when pulling into the campground. The tire tread was shredding off and wrapped up around the axle. We also did suffer a little minor damage. Luckily were able to get a brand new Goodyear G114 tire the next day & installed it. Despite a busy travel schedule we are doing our best to enjoy our much needed vacation! ☀️ If you're wondering what a week on the road costs, here is a breakdown of our week 1 ⬇️ ⛽️ Fuel = $628 🏕️ Campsites = $662 🍽️ Restaurants = $85 🛒 Groceries = $80 🛍️ Shopping/souvenirs = $120 🛞 Repairs = $640 🟰$ 2215 (*note: we did stock up on groceries before leaving Oregon) Are you team west coast or east coast?
