Ohhh, my heart. Max told me he was making me something for my birthday, and today he finished, and it is truly the sweetest present he's ever given me. He made the frame from the sides of a cat bed that he custom hand-made when our youngest was 6 years old. Once Alex outgrew the bed, we put it in storage with the idea that we would do something with it one day. 9 years later and he turned the bed into a picture frame for the cover of my debut YA book Things I'll Never Say. Then he printed out pages of my book and made the background, and then printed out the cover. This art piece is so special to me for so many different reasons. The frame represents the story of me transitioning from being a full-time stay at home mom to a working author. 2 of my kids are now in their 20s and living on their own, and our last kiddo almost a sophomore. This art piece reminds me of who I was, who I am, and who I am becoming as we start the journey to being empty nesters, and I move forward in following my dreams. #LetGo #AvrilLavigne #LosingGrip is a gripping intro. It’s everything you remember her being in this era: angsty, grungy, independent and beyond her years. #Complicated may be my favourite Avril song. It’s got a great melody and an inspirational message. Who knew a punk rocker could have a heart? #Sk8erBoi, her signature tune. What can I say except it’s a raucous fists in the air singalong with a killer bridge. I wasn’t overly fond of #ImWithYou when I was younger but my God, what a ballad this is! Again, the bridge is stunning; she’s particularly emotive here and during the chorus and the lyrics are relatable to anyone who’s human. #Mobile remains the most memorable album track for me. It’s just a little more uptempo than the majority of the record. This is true of #Unwanted, a sinister-sounding tune where she comes off slightly stalkerish. #Tomorrow has a softer melody and initially I thought the lyrics were a bit more hopeful as well but now I’m not so sure. #AnythingButOrdinary, the second most memorable non-single and probably my fourth favourite song after the big 3 singles. I love when she hits those higher notes. #ThingsIllNeverSay sounds the most out of place on this album. Think I’ve said this before but it’d be great in a 2000s romcom. #MyWorld also isn’t doing much for me nor is #NobodysFool. I’ve looked back at my last review for this album and my opinion hasn’t changed as I also still don’t care for #TooMuchToAsk and #Naked. Now for the deluxe tracks 🥁 #Why is kind of just dragging on as the last 4 tracks have done. It sounds like it was written by a 12 year old. #GetOverIt has a more addictive personality though I’m still not entirely sold on the lyrics. #Breakaway is the one I was looking most forward to and she did not disappoint. Washington and Oregon have some absolutely beautiful indie stores with even more beautiful people working and running them. Wherever you are, visit your local bookstore today and give them some love, either in person or online! Indie bookstores help build community, give people a place to meet and make friends, and talk about what they're reading, what they're looking forward to reading next, or how their day's been. They give people a chance to meet authors, hold awesome children's programs, give customers comfy places to sit and endless hours of wandering around to find magic on the shelves and in the shop.
