One of my husband's and my favorite things to do on our Disney trips is go to the EPCOT festivals and try the interesting foods served in smaller portions from outdoor booths themed to different countries around the world. This is Hummingbird Cake from The Artist's Table booth in the American pavilion of World Showcase. This was at EPCOT's Festival of the Arts last month. It's a banana and pecan cake dipped in cream cheese icing with caramel and warm pineapple compote. It was like bread pudding and it was amazing. 🧐 Fun fact - Hummingbird cake is now a southern staple. This is where I first fell in love with mochi! They have all sorts of flavors like green tea, lemon and mango and in all sorts of colors. I try to pick up a pack each visit. My chocolate-obsessed son picked the flavor for me this time and it did not disappoint. Plus you get 8 of them to share for about $7 🧐 Mochi is a little Japanese snack made from a short grain rice formed into chewy pods that have a texture somewhere between a gummy candy and a marshmallow. They have a fantastic quick service location called The Mara and I ordered the Marrakesh Falafel. This is house made falafel served with tabbouleh, cucumber-tomato salad, hummus, avocado-tahini sauce and pita bread. Loved it and it was a filling dinner. This is baked macaroni and cheese topped with smoked pulled pork, onion rings and coleslaw from Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. The mac and cheese is elevated, the pulled pork was so tender with fantastic smoke flavor that didn't overpower. The hype is real. A good seafood taco needs something crunchy, a zingy sauce, something fruity and something pickled...at least in my opinion. I was blown away by these shrimp tacos at the Siesta Cantina pool bar at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. These were citrus-marinated grilled shrimp with roasted pineapple salsa, lettuce, picked onions and lime aioli. Sub out the lettuce for a crunchy slaw and these would have been the best shrimp tacos I've ever had. 🧐 Fun fact - ever wonder why pickled onions are so pink? Maybe it’s the heat getting to me but all I want is jazz, a mint julep, and a cool breeze wafting off the rivers of America as the Mark Twain floats lazily by! I thought it would be fun to search the history of the Monte Cristo. Here’s what the Internet has to say… “Monte Cristo” is a tribute to the French novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. As such, the sandwich's name suggests its French origins. Food historians generally think that the Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of a French Croque Monsieur. “Disneyland did not invent the fried version of the Monte Cristo. It was being served in the 50s at the Brown Derby and the Hotel Del Coronado who was copying the Brown Derby for their similar clientele; celebrities. “The beautiful island of Montecristo is the 4th largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago. It has a colorful history full of monks, PIRATES and saints! “In 1966 – Disneyland made it famous! It appeared on the menu of the Blue Bayou and Tahitian Terrace restaurants in New Orleans Square and has continued to be a popular menu item to this day.” I’ve tried Montecristo‘s elsewhere and they never live up! I HAVE to get a Cafe Orleans reservation every trip, it’s a must do! Simply the best thing you can eat in any Disney park, period. I’ve tried a few of the make at home recipes and it’s not bad, although very messy! Have you tried a successful Monte Cristo at home? Or ever had one outside the parks that lives up to the reputation? And my East Coast friends, I’m so sorry. Although you can get the fried sandwich at the pool bar of the Riviera resort, Jason and I tried it in 2020 and it’s OK… But for the real thing you’ve just got to make the trip to New Orleans square!

Dinner at ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable meals in at of WDW. The meal consists of all you can enjoy food, drink (soda, ice tea, lemonade, water) and dessert. First came out the salad and the famous pineapple bread with honey butter. Then arrived a skillet of pork potstickers, the famous Ohana noodles, chicken wings and broccolini. I would be happy if I could eat the potstickers and noodles all day! The next round consisted of the grilled steak, peel your self shrimp and chicken thighs with chimichurri sauce. The steak was good, but I thought it was a little chewy for my preference, and the shrimp was easy to peel and grilled just right. But surprisingly, I thought the chicken was the best of the three! The chimichurri sauce elevated the grilled chicken and went really well with the meal. Then for dessert, the famous Ohana bread pudding and vanilla ice cream! Our CM brought us not one, but two of these massive desserts (we did have 5 adults eating, but one would have been plenty!). With the ceremonial/obligatory caramel sauce pour, it was just what I had remembered! Overall, we would definitely eat here again! With current times, the Cast do not bring out the meats on a larger skewer stick like before, but ‘Ohana continues to showcase the delicious food, the relaxing atmosphere with the ukulele player and views of Magic Kingdom just across Seven Seas Lagoon. But most of all, the Cast truly make the restaurant fun and enjoyable. We even remembered our CM server from the last time we dined there! If you know, you know! The pulled pork fries at Animal Kingdom's Flame Tree Barbecue are great as a shared snack OR a full meal (especially if you snack all day at Disney like us!). 🧀 They're also topped with that famous Disney Parks plastic cheese (not really plastic; just melty, cheesy goodness!) 🍟 I was craving these today, but we ended up with chicken fried rice from a local restaurant which reminded me of AK's Yak & Yeti! Animal Kingdom food was definitely on my mind today!

Next in our "best of" category is Walt Disney World Quickservice! This is another tough one! I know this might be a controversial take, but I'm going out of the parks for this one. Yes, there are some winners in the Disney parks for sure, Docking Bay 7 has emerged as a crowd favorite, Satu'li Canteen is such a solid choice, and of course Cosmic Rays is a classic! But my heart will always belong to Captain Cooks at the Polynesian Resort! Why is this the winner? 3 reasons: 🏅Tonga Toast! 🏅Pulled Pork Nachos 🏅Seasonal Cupcakes Honestly I could eat Tongo toast for breakfast and Pulled Pork Nachos for lunch every day of my trip and be happy. Add to that a solid lineup of cupcakes (both the regulars and the seasonal options) and you can't go wrong!
