. - [A little random harvest & some tips/tricks]: So what other challenges are you going to encounter while growing veggies such as lettuce. Apart from little hungry bugs that are inevitable in nature - but can be reduced in a few different ways (which I've shared in previous posts). Another challenge will be *spacing* the plants properly from the get go. In my case I came to realize that where there should've been 1 lettuce there are 2 or 3 competing for space, and the major issue with this is that the energy that should be going to 1 lettuce so that it grows to its fullest potential has been divided into 2 or 3. Another problem is that the airflow is limited which causes the tightly sitting lettuces to wither away due to not being able to breathe fully. << Proper spacing: 6 - 18 inches (15 - 45 cm). >> So what to do? Well, you'll have to remove the ones causing problems the most or the smallest ones not getting enough sunlight. What to do this weekend: If you're ready for Gardening 201, you can collect seeds this weekend for next year's garden. You can obviously buy plants at the nursery, but if you have a lot of ground to cover and want to do it economically, or need a little fall project, and/or love seeing seeds come to life in the spring, try harvesting your own seeds this fall from annuals or perennials. Here I have seeds that I collected from Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea), swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) and foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis). Aren't they cool? During this time of year, most perennials have gone to seed, so if you see your plants with brown seed heads, you can easily collect them by cutting off the seed stems, carefully removing the seeds and placing them in a labeled envelope, and storing them in a cool dark place over winter. Start small with annual plants that easily germinate (like cosmos) and maybe you'll be inspired to keep going. I get a ridiculous thrill from plants that I've grown from seed that I collected from plants that I grew the previous year. These in particular require winter stratification , but I'm ready for the challenge! If you want to try it and have questions, please feel free to ping me. Seed collection & storage While this season is fading, we can often gen melancholy for it will soon become very harsh and sad in many parts. Though that may be true, each season grants us a different beauty. While the last blooms are in their mid flush, it's time to appreciate the seeds that are drying to be stored or cast into the wind and rain for next year. THAT'S exciting too. Don't you find seeds beautiful with each having a different personality as much as people do. Look at these two examples. The top is Calendula with round floral seed clusters with a curl of a seed. The lower seed selection is from the Partridge Pea with squarish seed shapes that come from elongated seed pods. I find it really pretty myself and it makes me happy to appreciate them as I store them with a barrage of others. In case you do not know, do not store seeds in plastic. Store in something where the seeds can breathe. Also, be sure to let the seeds dry as best as you can before storage and inspect so that if there is any kind of bug or nest remnant, clean it out to keep your stash good and safe from a Winter meal for the insects. I often store my seeds in small envelopes or like here in tiny linen seeds bags. I then write a tiny label and attach to the tie or write on the envelope small enough, that it's possible I could reuse the envelope again and maybe even scratch the name or erase to write a new seed type along with the season year. It's good to be green. Do you collect seeds? I've got a good 30 but I never generally use them all. I just never do. Some day, maybe. Seed saving season is almost upon us in the garden, and I’m excited to announce a new offering in my shop! If you’re like me, you have seeds saved all over the place—sometimes labeled, sometimes “I’ll remember what they are…”—so I designed these to help stay organized. Fill in your seed name, indoor or direct sow date, plant spacing and depth, sun requirement, and (this is great for native seeds especially) cold stratification timeframe. It’s been a day of collecting seeds from lily’s, alliums, aquilegia and poppies. As well as lifting some plants and putting into pots to grow on a bit and then find new homes in the garden. GÖR SÅ HÄR 1 Vik pappret på mitten. 2 Vik in 1+1 cm längs den öppna långsidan. Placera inviket mot bordet. 3 Vik upp det nedre hörnet där du har invikningen på baksidan, mot den andra långsidan så du får en triangel. 4 Vik upp spetsen till en lika stor triangel, tryck fast under inviket och sidan är försluten. 5 Fyll på med frön och förslut andra sidan på samma sätt. Organza påsar perfekt för att samla frön från mina favoritblommor, visst det är F1 sorter men hur ostabila är dom igentligen? Iår tar jag frön från dom jag tycker bäst om så får jag experimentera lite nästa år. Mini penséer är ätbara så kul att dekorera med också, allt från vitlökssmöret till salladen. Frön går att plocka förhand också men oftast hinner dom ramla av innan jag hinner samla upp dom därav är påsarna superbra.
