Yesterday, I completed the Fairfield Horseshoe, a total of 8 Wainwright's in a circular hiking trail, above Rydal in central Lake District. Starting from Rydal, I soon came across a wooden style bathed in golden sunshine and followed the dry stone wall snaking up the mountainside. I reached the summits of Low Pike and High Pike with stunning views back towards Windermere. The higher I climbed, the wind became stronger the snow became deeper underfoot, as the low cloud closed in obscuring the views. I donned my woolly hat, and warm gloves braced myself against the bitterly cold conditions and continued up towards the peaks of Dove Crag, Hart Crag. The clouds lifted, revealing the beautiful valley below, I stopped off to admire the view enjoying a warming cup off coffee before continuing towards Fairfield, the highest Wainwright on this hike. I decended down the next Ridgeway, including the summits of Great Rigg, Heron Pike, and Nab Scar, all of which I had previously completed. As I reached Nab Scar, the sun was shining again, giving me marvellous views of Rydal Water nestled below. 🏔️ Fairfield Horseshoe via Stone Arthur What a very challenging route this was especially experiencing it with all kinds of weather. Started off with sunshine that soon changed quickly. 🌞🌥️❄️💨🌬️🌧️ We completed it in reverse and it took 6 hours ⏱️. It was very steep throughout. 9 ticked off✅ 📍Low Pike 📍High Pike 📍Dove Crag 📍Hart Crag 📍Fairfield 📍Great Rigg 📍Stone Arthur 📍Heron Pike 📍Nab Scar When you get to Stone Arthur you will loose some height then realise you have to regain it again to go back up to complete the last two which at this part you are absolutely knackered 😴 but it’s got to be done! Over all I’m glad this hike is ticked off so I don’t have to do it again 😂 the weather didn’t help. SUNDAY 28th JANUARY 2024 - Dove Crag from Ambleside. ⛰️ Low Pike (508m), High Pike (656m) and Dove Crag (792m). 🥾 15km, or 9 miles, with 876m ascent. ⏱️ 5 hours 30 mins. A nice stroll out of Ambleside up part of the eastern leg of the Fairfield Horseshoe. It was a very mild morning and quite sweaty on way up, but above 450m was thick cloud with visibility down to less than 20m in places. Quite strong winds built up into the afternoon bringing colder temperatures. From Dove Crag, a bit of compass navigation was required to get across the hillside and onto the path that leads eastwards down to the Scandale Pass. Canny 24 hours in the lakes, wet and windy. Took shelter in the #priestshole for the first night just off to the north east of #dovecrag then summited in the morning. It was blowing a hooly, so we decided to call it a day and head down via the gully just off to the south east of the summit.
