Well, at 6:30am I was at a 5 on the pain scale. Now that I’ve gone through a whole work day, a VERY BUSY work day with back to back calls & almost no time to break so I can lay down, I’m at a 15 on the pain scale. I’m crying. I’m going through almost any other scenario that I’d rather be in than this one, including death. Living in constant pain is hard. Throw all my other symptoms on top of it, & it makes life very hard to enjoy. It has become somewhat of a mantra for me for the past few weeks as #symptoms such as pain, dizziness and weakness in the legs have worsened, and unfortunately, all around the time, I am due to go on a #cruise for the first time in six years. In all honesty, every day lately has become an enormous struggle, and there have been so many days where I feel ultimately defeated by a condition that has eclipsed my entire life and being. And the thought of going away, anywhere, but especially on a cruise, is completely overwhelming and scary. With the shakiness in my legs at an all-time high, who knows how my legs will feel on a ship constantly in motion as it rides the waves of the seas it’s travelling through? So, as well as all the physical symptoms are at their worst, so too are the effects it has on my mental health - I have experienced so many of the worst down days, feeling weak, defeated and depressed. And the anxiety - it has been my arch nemesis, knocking my confidence, telling me I can’t get through it all, and so on. All in all, I have experienced the hardest of struggles and days, so please send me your most positive thoughts, mantras and well wishes - and I hope beyond hope that I can get through tomorrow and safely on the ship that will be home for the following 18 nights. Hey hello, this is my april wrap up (I didn't count how many times my head said March, my brain is time confused) April started out crazy with visiting my grandma/going on a mini holiday for 4 days. But it ended nice and slow in a way that's good for me I hope you had a good April! Love Pien💙
Well, I'm working on some ideas for tracking my pain levels during more strenuous activities and seeing if over time those activities will become easier to handle, even with my chronic conditions. I included space for the date, the type of activity, the duration of the activity, my pain level during activity, immediately following the activity, and within 24 to 48 hours after activity. On the backside of the insert I included a place to write down where the pain is located, what type of pain I'm having, and changes in pain over the week after the activity. I think this will help me a lot. It'll give me a better look at how my body reacts and what things I did to help myself recover and treat the pain. It's still in the early process I think I need to actually have to figure out exactly how much space I need for each piece of information and a place for notes afterwards. Baseline vs flare up For those who are just starting on your chronic illness journey… have you been able to know what your baseline for pain and symptoms are vs what your are up pain and symptoms are? For me I live with constant pain but most days it’s manageable with medication and my items that make me feel comfortable. When I get into a flare up I am miserable, don’t want to socialize, usually hibernating somewhere that keeps me “feeling” comfortable, taking additional meds to help combat some of the pain. The things I do daily are: making sure I stay hydrated, trying to eat smaller meals to keep my sugars stable, stretching or taking a walk, and listening to my body when I need a rest! For those who don’t know, unfortunately my biologic (Taltz) I was taking for my rheumatologic disease has given me Crohn’s disease. It’s unfortunately a rare but known side effect of the medication. I have started a new biologic that should hopefully cover both of my autoimmune diseases but as many of you know, biologics take some time to work. *long post alert ‼️* So after the last few days of smashing it I have woken up this morning and can hardly move ! I’m exhausted have a headache and in tons of pain ! 😖💊 Love Care Bears and love this image from @endohumour 💖 today I am a ‘flare bear’ 🐻 My body is telling me to rest, sleep and recharge. But my brain is telling me to stop being dramatic and get on with it ! I have always struggled with an all or nothing mindset I think this is an ADHD thing and actually discussed this with the endocrinologist on Friday who said I need to find a balance between doing well and resting when needed ! I look at other people smashing their journeys and then beat myself up that I can’t do it everyday ! But I have to remember I have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis. This was a Dysautonomia dare. I’ve been told it’s very likely that I have #dysautonomia , or as I am calling it, “Dysaut-oh, no, no, no!” Trying to explain it to people while in the diagnostic process is tricky, especially when I’m eating tons of salt—as-salting myself, if you will. I try to keep it simple because there are no definitive answers, but it backfired by freaking out someone I thought was royally cute. Seems to me that lots of salt for health reasons freaks some people out, lol. A good friend of mine gave me this dare after my confidence was shot to shit. She dared me to go back and make a new impression on this cute person by getting a “surprise drink.” In other words, letting the waitstaff pick a drink for me and let me guess. Obviously, this had to be within limits; no more ER visits and no mixing alcohol and meds. While the cute person wasn’t there that day, I still couldn’t resist asking for a surprise drink. Damn, when that dare came through in this beautiful form, it was delicious. I could suck this drink down all day and all night. @grancaffelaquila , your staff makes a badass mocktail! Who said you need booze for a drink that’ll rocket you to the moon? Surprise drinks on a date was so much fun too. Whether or not I have Dysaut-oh, no, no, no, I will be doing this again in the future. Gran Caffè L’Aquila has been a go-to of mine for years, but one small dare made it fresh and new. Attempt two at surgery today! 🥺 What a way to spend your bank holiday weekend! Unfortunately surgery couldn’t be completed yesterday, so we are heading back to Kings this morning for another long day ahead! This is the life of disability. The life of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I’m now on 48 hours of fasting and it feels horrible. But we have to do what we have to do to get to where we need to! Yesterday really demotivated me. I felt hopeless. I felt angry. I felt out of control. In truth I am out of control. But I am strong. I am resilient. And I know I can do this. I know I have to do this to get answers. A few days ago we went on a walk with the dogs and I looked back at them this morning. Feeling lost. Feeling tired. But seeing the beauty in our world. The beauty of creation. Which reminds me my faith will sustain me. Highly likely the Spoonie in me talking but pregnancy back supports are just BAD 🤦🏻♀️ I’ve tried two so far but they’re so flimsy they’re doing absolutely nothing to help with lower back pain. They just feel like giant elastic bands with some padding 😅 I’m well aware it could be because the kind of back supports & braces I’m used to wearing have steel bars inside so are wayyy more heavy duty, but either way there’s a lot of room for improvement there (especially for those with existing conditions, Disabilities & injuries) Good job I’m used to my spine feeling like a noodle 🫠🤣

You didn’t do anything to deserve your chronic illness or pain. There’s so much external messaging from doctors and society as a whole that blame patients for their conditions. Doctors will lecture you about “stress management” or “sleep hygiene” as ways to shift the blame to you when their proposed treatments don’t work. Society will make you feel like you’re lazy or worth less than others because you’re chronically ill and can’t hold down a job or need disability benefits. It’s so easy to internalize these messages, but none of it is true. You didn’t do anything to deserve being chronically ill or in pain. Maybe you don’t spend as many hours a day doing PT as would be ideal for all of your issues or sometimes you eat things you know will make you sick, but no one’s perfect. Expecting chronically ill patients to constantly be managing their symptoms leaves no time to actually live your life. As important is it is to manage my health, it’s also important for my mental health not to feel like a patient 24/7. And to give my mind and body some breaks so I can experience joy amidst all the pain. Sure it would probably be better for my body if I was constantly at home, especially now that it’s getting warm out which is a trigger for me. But I’d much rather be having a hard Monday after spending a wonderful weekend in LA with my family than if I had skipped the baby shower because it could flare my symptoms up. No matter what decisions you make in order to add as much happiness and joy to your chronically ill life are perfectly ok, and they don’t mean you deserve to be sick. You’re doing the best you can and that’s all you can ask for. Does anyone else struggle with feeling like their illness is their fault? For transparency, just making this post has taken me about 4 hours 😵💫 I have ME/CFS which is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) and it is a long-term (chronic), fluctuating, neurological disease that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems.
