The Spider The beginning of a new series of images which show the interconnectedness of Humans and the rest of nature. Our place as Humans is to protect and enhance. Look closer, connect and you will experience subtle yet unmistakable visuals that show that nature is overflowing with manifestations of spiritual energy. On a misty morning I photographed a labyrinth of webs in spiky Gorse, on the Cornish coastline. The webs contain the energy of the spider. I used no digital enhancement, only a basic mirror image technique to make it easier for us to see. Climate activists from #extinctionrebellion and #greenpeace staged a colourful protest outside the Cornish Council offices to ask gathering politicians about a commitment to net zero emissions made by the previous administration. The May elections returned a majority Conservative council knocking the previous coalition of Liberal Democrats and Independents out of Cabinet positions. The coalition’s goal of Zero Emissions by 2030 was announced after declaring a Climate Emergency in January 2019. The plans included 8000 hectares of trees and hedges, a “Whole House Retrofit Project” which would see energy efficiency improvements made to council owned housing and the formation of a “Climate Emergency Planning Document” which would aid the council in mitigating Cornwalls role in the Climate Crisis and strengthen green policies for the “Cornwall Local Plan”. In July this year Liberal Democrat Cllr Andrew George tabled a motion asking for support of the “Climate and Ecological Bill (CEE). The Bill would’ve committed the government to formulate strategies taking action against Climate Change that went above and beyond the “Environment Bill” that was making its way through the House of Lords. Devon County Council had debated and voted to support the CEE paving the way for Cornwall Council to follow suit. An amendment forwarded by Conservative Cllr Louis Gardner removed support for the bill shifting the focus back onto Cornwalls Conservative MPs and the already in motion Environment Bill. Cllr Edwina Hanniford suggested an amendment that gave support to both the CEE and the Environment Bill. Cllr George accepted this, but even with Cllr Hanniford amendment it was ultimately defeated again, this time by a 39 - 35 majority. The gathered protestors wanted to raise their collective anxieties about what will happen to the former councils commitments when it comes to the environment. Debacles like the one caused by Cllr Gardner have done little to ease the growing concern about Cornwalls environmental direction. Ground nesting res on our allotment. Only thing is we have had our allotment taken away from us. The next allotment holders can just put weed Killer down. We have the best res because we have tended the land in harmony with nature, living with the mole that has its home there & this is where the bees have nested. The allotment association & Cornwall Council don’t like the way we took care of the land but the bees may not have been there if we hadn’t grown our crops in the way we have. I have written letters & spoken on the phone to now the point the council have become aggressive about us moving off. I am so very sad about the bees & as my daughter our little dog found the place a haven amongst nature from the pollution of traffic filled St Ives. And a place to grow food away from this pollution. When will we protect nature properly? The Earth is only on our care for future generations!! I can only thank that we must have saved so many creatures for the 5 years we were there. We have till the 1st of October ironically a Friday. The council said they have noted our concerns for the bees but didn’t ask where they were. We have moved what plants we can as they will just be destroyed but there are an abundance of flowers we put in for the bees & pollinators that can’t be seen in winter we can’t move as it’s too much & the Council or new tenants can just remove everything. Perhaps it’s time these types of bees were protected. Anxious about the future of our time on this earth? As a nature lover, the past few days have been tough as more and more people and children become aware of the climate situation that faces us. I see lots of ideas,frustrations,conflicting advice, anger, denial, hopeless messages online everyday. Some of the messages say, (and this was something I used to feel), that the planet will survive after we(humans) are gone. But this also means the animals,birds and plants that are here now will be massively harmed too and I'm not OK with that. So I have my little patch and I'm gunna keep connecting us all back to the land as much as possible to refind that reciprocal and loving relationship with nature and ourselves (this being an inward journey as well as an outward) If you have read this far, do you feel driven to join us? What motivates you to do what you do? 'I confess that a lot of the time it is anger at the state of things. I see a bad situation, feel it is unbearable and want to act. Action can take many forms and I have been involved in various non-violent protests beginning with anti-apartheid at university. I was so angry about nuclear weapons in Britain in the eighties, that I resigned my job as a young doctor in Casualty and went to live at the Women’s Peace Camp at Greenham, where I met so many inspiring amazing women. The nuclear threat hasn’t gone away and now we face another existential threat: the climate and ecological crises. Just this weekend I have been protesting with Doctors for Extinction Rebellion. We held an inquest on Harbour Beach in St Ives, along from the G7 meeting. Take a look. That’s my Ethiopian husband in the picture protesting about the impact of these crises in the Global South. G7 PROTESTS >> My home county of Cornwall is in the midst of hosting the leaders of the some of the world's richest nations for the G7 summit (we saw the Japanese PM's plane fly over on Tuesday night!). On the agenda are health, climate change and the environment, and international development – and specifically how we rebuild after the pandemic. The reception in Cornwall has been mixed with some arguing that being in such a beautiful part of the world will surely encourage leaders to take more decisive steps to protect the protect the environment, and others suffering from the road and business closures mandated to make way for the delegates. Somewhat hilariously, while the summit is taking place in St Ives, the official protest site is some 27 miles away in Truro. Needless to say @extinctionrebellioncornwall is having none of that and will be staging a series of protests right in the heart of St Ives (and across the UK) focusing on the failure of G7 nations to respect the global climate commitments they made in Paris in 2015 – and urging the G7 leaders act immediately to address the climate and ecological emergency that only gets more urgent by the day. Thank you everyone for you kind comments earlier this week. Sorry not to reply individually, I was going to but it felt a bit hard to begin with but I read them all and very much appreciated all the love. We are ok, adjusting, missing our little furry ball of weird but we also know it was just time. I made this image after Mr G painted some garden furniture in the kitchen (I know...) and Babs trod through the drips of blue paint. We found little blue pawprints everywhere afterwards. It became quite a common theme in our house. Protestors in Cornwall, UK took to the seas last night to launch a campaign against polluting cruise shipping in Falmouth Harbour. . The grassroots activist group - dubbed 'Ocean Rebellion' projected films and slogans onto the hull of the ship to raise awareness of the environmental impact of cruise shipping. . Luxury cruise ships emit 10 times more air pollution than all of Europe’s cars and the shipping industry, including the luxury cruise industry, pays no fuel tax. . Falmouth and Penryn Extinction Rebellion have been able to buy our first 1000 oak tree saplings (out of the 750,000 destined for mulching because of a Government u-turn) thanks to the wonderful support of people like you! We intend to buy as many of these little trees as we can, so please follow the link in my bio to contribute to the fund if at all possible. Every little helps! 🌱 We are working hard to ensure we get these trees planted in the right places to ensure their future survival - we desperately need them to succeed. With the insanity of HS2 ploughing through ancient woodlands and the proposed 'build, build, build' policy, we need every tree to count. We understand it will be a long time before they can make much difference to our beleaguered environment, but we must try to do whatever we can to reverse this seemingly unstoppable trend of destruction of our natural world. The destruction of 750,000 oak tree saplings destined to be ploughed in after the latest Government U-turn. But we can help save some of them at least! Every Sunday earth action group Extinction Rebellion take to the streets for a socially distant protest that asks us to have a look at some of the changes that have happened around the world whilst we've been in lockdown and make a positive change for a better future. This action is jarringly quiet, the slow definite movements and near silence from the protestors is eerie and arresting in equal parts. St Ives was relatively busy today, all things considering, and Extinction Rebellion were well received as they fielded the occasional question and stood patiently for people to digest what they were being shown. One couple remarked that education was key and they were certainly achieving that. As lockdown eases I suspect we will see more from this group who have made an impressive impact on our national psyche. Wow. Last night I went to hear Jo McAndrews’ talk ‘Supporting children in the face of the climate crisis.’ Wasn’t really sure what to expect. Great to be reminded how neuroscience is helping us to relearn something understood by our ancestors and many non-industrial societies today - to build resilience in our children we simply need to stay attuned to them and sit alongside them through the good and the crap. ‘That easy ...and that hard!’ in Jo’s words. And the ‘crap’ includes the angry acting out, which is just the brain in distress. Punishment and rewards are not the answer - staying on side is. Connection. Because it’s all we all want and need - kids and adults - to feel known and understood. We can’t make climate change go away. No matter how much we want to move heaven and earth for the children we love. But we can make sure they don’t have to be alone with their fears. Dawn Chorus: On Saturday amidst the storm, bird-costumed activists processed through Falmouth town centre, accompanied by the sound of bird song, and lead by a flock of 5 foreboding crows. Targeting the town’s banks (with each visit culminating in a die-in inside the branch), the group highlighted the devastating effects of climate change and air pollution on the UK’s bird population, and called on the banks to urgently divest from climate destroying, air polluting fossil fuel industries. 📷 @james_pearce_photographer
Students from around Cornwall marched through Truro today as they took part in the Student Strike protesting against political inaction towards the growing climate crisis.
