Happy Saturday, everyone! It’s a beautiful day in my area. Perfect for gardening… but unfortunately, I have put myself on gardening punishment today lol. I’m focusing on cleaning my house today (Boooo 👎🏽) so I’ll be indoors. But, I had to at least snap a couple pictures of my potatoes. They are coming along nicely and the first bag I planted has really taken off. Time to hill up all the bags. Before and after a really good prune. Those green leaves in the before photo aren’t from the tree, they’re from the brambles that were snaking all through the tree. The tree has brambles crossing all over the place so I’ve pruned it hard to give it a chance to grow a bit more cleanly. Love a good days work.

And though raising chickens has had its fair share of challenges (or perhaps we should call them “learning experiences” 🤔), they truly have been a joy to raise. Not only do they have loads of personality & have benefited the garden in many ways, one of the best parts has been consistent egg production every single day. We are finally at a point where we can share our eggs with friends & family 🐓 Being former wedding photographers & designers at @luxbindery, we value presentation in everything. So when it came time to determine our packaging for our eggs, it was a no brainer…use the tools that you have. Beautiful eggs require beautiful packaging! My talented husband sketched one of our hens, Penny, & created a simple illustration for our egg cartons. You can grow in pots on balconies, or pots in backyards. You can build big raised beds, or source old tubs and culvert rounds. You can dig straight into the lawn, or cover it with cardboard and layer mulch on top. A maara doesn’t have to be made from expensive materials or carefully curated to the finest details beforehand. New spaces in my backyard have more than once started with a little spontaneous motivation, and a glass of wine on a sunny afternoon. In my backyard, the first garden space began with a spade in the middle of the lawn before evolving to raised beds the following year as I settled. The second, an afternoon laying out cardboard on a whim and slowly layering organic matter out in rows over winter. Everyone thought I was mad, until they returned again in summer and witnessed the colourful abundance 🌻 Every garden has a beginning. Succession Sowing seems to be one of those topics that makes the everyday gardener turn and run. Even I in the beginning would hear the phrase, 'succession sowing' and feel my brain go numb. However succession sowing doesn't have to be complicated, especially for us beginners just trying to make a beautiful, green space in our backyard. Rather the key to succession sowing is by simplifying the process. When it comes to flowers, the main focus for succession sowing should be ⟨⟨annuals⟩⟩ and there are two types that will determine frequency. CUT AND COME AGAIN • continuous blooms • examples include cosmos, zinnia, snapdragons, sweet peas, strawflower • sow every 12 weeks ONE AND DONE • have one bloom • examples include sunflowers, stock, celosia, bread seed poppies, buplureum • sow every 6 weeks There are FOUR sowing times that are compulsory to hit for year round interest in your garden and these are : • Early Autumn & Late Winter = hardy annuals • Late Spring & Mid Summer = tender annuals Of course your timings will be dependent on your climatic region and of course your gardening goals. If your dream is to harvest loads of cut flowers for sale you will need to sow more. But, generally if you are looking to have a flourishing garden with seasonal interest all year, then concentrating on these sowing windows is a good place to start. Ok so it turns out yesterday’s gram pic wasn’t dull at all… well how about this is rather lame picture …a handful of beans! What I’ve failed to catch visually I will also fail to convey in text. These are - Fort Portal jade beans - from Uganda and are strikingly otherworldly in touch and in colouring. They’re the type of thing where if you had a massive jar of them you couldn’t stop repeatedly plunging your hand in or staring at the almost iridescent eggshell finish, all in all they’re a sensory joy. They’re a new one for me, I’m usually a Blauhilde for fresh or Borlotti for drying type of girl so I can’t wait to see what these little jewels achieve here on this overly wind battered hillside.
