The single late tulips, also known as May tulips or French singles, are all in full bloom now. (Several days early just like the whole season, which also seems to be running early this year). The arrival of my three favorite French singles, Dordgone’, ‘Menton’ and ‘Camargue’ - all named for towns in France- swing the color palette in the tulips beds towards sherbet shades of pink, apricot, and yellow. In a few days, the background color in ‘Camargue’ tulips (the ones with two tone splashes in Picture Three) will turn from yellow to white, completing the flower’s transformation into a white flower with pink splashes. Not all of my aquilegias are already blossoming, but most 🤭 the little one in the front is a new one. Found it in the parking spot besides the house and tried to get it out and plant it in the garden. Hope it survives. That's a real keeper. The other new ones are all a bit off with greenish tips and always one leaf not being straight. Probably again Nora Barlow had her saying in that. And todays German word is 'Die Blase' - it can have several meanings in Englisch. After yesterdays digging I got a blister. That is one meaning. Good morning Monday! Here’s a little shot of what we have been doing all week. We were booked to go away in the van for a few days but the garden took priority. Narcissus poeticus, the poets narcissus is the last to flower, usually in May but like everything else it’s early this year. Also known as Pheasants Eye narcissus it’s one of my must have plants. Still have some few tulips blossoming. Here it is late bloomer 'Carnaval de Rio'. Most are gone and I did already the 'Alice in Wonderland'-routine: Off with their head! and hope they come back next year. Buying tulip bulbs was always one of my favourite plant addictions but I felt that this year was a meh tulip year for me. Alot of tulips had only foliage and no blossoms and it felt that many tulips only blossomed for a short period plus I had not that much time to enjoy them because of work, storm or rain. So at the moment I really do not feel like actually wanting to buy new tulips and just may live with the ones that may come back on their own. Also I already did a sneek peek into the new tulips this season and found a super duper filled one, even more than the ice cream ones that looks weirdly cool. So it is affording food or affording tulips... 😂 But really, that bugs me that I even don't look up to buying tulips anymore 🤷🏻♂️ what's next? Disinterest in Lego? Life? Or worse: chocolate?I know, that escalated quickly. But buy now, people who read my texts know me 🤓😢 and I just saw that I wrote 'buy now' and I just sell that not as a stupid typo or autocorrect (I actually think it was that fu**er) but it was of course super on purpose as a subliminal message to make you all buy more tulips. And the German word for today is: Fritten Schranke. That needs some explanation. Fritten are Fries (or chips when you live in the UK) in Germany chips are what you guys call crisps. And Schranke are those barriers at entrances at parking garages or other places. In Germany they are often red and white. Emotions you might experience on a floral workshop here at Hamsey…. - ooooo look at all the flowers (this will continue on repeat, it is totally normal) - I can’t do this (but you can) - frustration with a stem that you want to bend up and yet for some reason it will only bend down - oooo look at all the flowers…how can I fit them all in this tiny bowl? - you will talk to the flowers “come on just move over a little bit” that kind of thing, this is also totally normal - there will be a point where you will think it will never look like you want it to, but it will - you won’t want to stop tinkering with the flowers in your arrangement - you will feel relaxed - when you do eventually stop playing with the flowers and look around at everyone else’s, they will all be completely different and you will like theirs more than yours….this is also perfectly normal - then you will look back at yours and smile because you created it and it is your flowery arrangement and you are proud of it - you will take your bowl of flowers home and pop it in pride of place and every time you look at it (or indeed a photo of it) it will make you smile What can I say, it is a rollercoaster🎢 but a fun one!!! I go through that thought process pretty much every time I create anything but the endorphins at the end and the joy it gives me are well worth it. Tulip Tuesday. The first of my tulips has emerged and after obsessing about a potential colour clash I think the bright pink of Silver Parrot and the lemon of Narcissus Verdin do indeed work! That's a relief. There are several others emerging in this pot but they are mainly on a white/green theme, still some more pink too! I'm currently replacing my stock after last years tulip fire. These are in new, disinfected pots and so far so good. Next year I must remember to order some early tulips as I feel I've had to wait patiently for these. Today's the day! After a month without heating and hot water, the engineers arrived early this morning to install a new boiler - although it won't be up and running till tomorrow, most of the work is done. I've taken outdoor pictures today as the inside is so messy with tables and surfaces piled high with the contents from my craft cupboard and airing cupboard, but it will be so worth it, I'm quite excited for the warmth and hot water, it's been freezing upstairs - I even resorted to a hot water bottle on the colder nights. Today I dug out of the snow on the north side of the house two containers of tulips. Each was protected with large over turned nursery pots. One nursery pot got squished by the weight of the snow, but both tulip containers are in good shape. Saturday I dug up the tray of 50 Tulip turkestanica that has been buried in the snow on the north side of the house all winter. It was still under 18” of snow. I had placed a boot tray on top to protect the bulbs from rodents and excess moisture. Yesterday I planted the bulbs in the ground.
