What a treat to watch Roy Kent @mrbrettgoldstein from @tedlassolovers in AZ for his very witty, laugh out loud stand up comedy show on Saturday night. Incredibly entertaining, loved every minute of it! Before the show, we had another awesome dinner at Anhelo restaurant. We ordered the 2020 Jacques Carillon Chassagne Montrachet and paired it with yellow tail crudo with amazing avocado, cucumber coconut lime tea, Fresno pepper, cherry tomato, blood orange, micro greens and radish for added crunch. We followed it with a 2020 Domaine de l’Arot NSG 1er Mont Des Oiseaux Ossetra plus leftover CM that was paired perfectly with the knockout Caviar, lemon bubbles, dashi custard & chive. Next up was the Cabernet & Bordeaux flight 2021 Vice Versa Spinning Plates & 2010 Chateau Montrose plus the splash of Red Burg which provided incredible contrast and pairing knocking it out of the park on the dry aged prime beef Wellington! Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet Les Perriéres 2014 🥂🥂🥂 A deep, nuanced, slightly reticent nose requires your attention with notes of white fruit, spring flowers, sprinkled rock salt and hints at vanilla. Lemon-scented verbena with air. The classy, faceted serious aromas do not exactly come screaming out of the stem but open up gradually. Pointed, precise and delineated palate. More stone fruit, as on the nose, coupled with crushed minerals galore and a lingering acidity which, despite not standing out, is serious enough to balance out the quite serious concentration. A midpalate width with some weight to it, but the delivery is impressively pure, controlled; almost harnessed in style. I have loved almost every single wine I’ve had from Jacques since 2010. Seriously good. Try again 2026 🥂🥂🥂
2017 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts: Crisp and clean, with ripe stone fruit that’s nicely balanced with racy acid. Really tasty wine — lovely tension and precision! 2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 375ml: Woah, this is extremely delicious! I was nervous about this half bottle being advanced given the age and small format, but this is a total stunner. Rich, ripe & weighty orchard fruit, with punchy lemon & lime citrus and killer acid. Super impressive and in such a perfect spot right now. Admittedly PYCM isn’t a producer that I’ve gone super deep on as I’ve rarely been blown away by their younger wines relative to the price. La recette du succès de ce domaine confidentiel est d’abord historique. La famille de Jacques est profondément ancrée dans l’histoire de Puligny et y produit du vin depuis le XVIème siècle ! Les anciennes générations ne produisaient pas que du vin, le domaine était en polyculture comme souvent autrefois. En 1980, Jacques reprend avec son frère François l’affaire familiale et vinifient ensemble jusqu’en 2010, année de la séparation du domaine. Avec sa femme Silvia, Jacques récupère alors 5 hectares de vigne sur la dizaine initiale. Il se retrouve alors seul maître à bord de ses rangs de Chardonnay et fait le choix d’une agriculture raisonnée, sans herbicide. Très vite, la qualité de ses vins blancs se fait remarquer par les amateurs, incarnant le grand classicisme bourguignon, ce qui n’est pas pour déplaire à Jacques puisque c’est absolument le style qu’il souhaite leur donner. Droits, épurés, les vins sont ciselés, presque cristallins, et retranscrivent à merveille la minéralité des sols calcaires de Puligny. L’apport en bois est maîtrisé avec seulement 20-25% de bois neuf utilisés pour la fermentation puis l’élevage d’un an. L’usage du bâtonnage est modéré. Le Puligny-Montrachet est la cuvée emblématique du domaine, porté par une énergie folle. Champ Canet s’exprime avec davantage d’ampleur en bouche et des notes florales toujours subtiles. Enfin, Perrières contient une minéralité rare grâce à son terroir qui inspira les moines Cisterciens pour trouver un nom à ce climat. J’aime ouvrir les vins de Jacques à partir de 3 ans après la mise en bouteille. Ils tiennent ensuite de longues années en cave. The first Carillon vigneron in Puligny, Jehan, has been traced back to 1520 although the winery logo only boasts in 1632. The Carillon holdings were incorporated as Domaine Louis Carillon et fils in 1981. Nonetheless they had been one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most consistently successful domaines over the past three decades. After the 2009 vintage Louis Carillon’s two sons, Jacques and François, have decided to go their own ways. Jacques will have the Referts, Champs Canet and Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, while François will have the Combettes and the remaining vineyards will be split between them. The domaine consisted of 12 ha of vineyards, the vast majority lying in Puligny Montrachet, with small parcels of vines in 5 Puligny 1ers Crus and a tiny holding in the Grand Cru Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. This domaine produced some of the most impressive wines in the village with low yields, minimum racking and judicious use of new oak to give the wines their intensity and discreet elegance. Young, delicious wines, each and every one. The '16 Frédéric Emile may be the best, at the very least one of the best, at this stage. Normally fairly s hut down, fruits hidden, this one is quite open. 2019 Jamet is spectacular right now. Wow! Loads of blue fruits, some red & black, all kinds of purple floral character, lovely herbs, mineral, shockingly good. A spectacular Hermitage, and the youngest one I have ever opened, this 2017 Chave is going to be fabulous. It tooks 3 hours to start to reveal its grandeur... '21 Clos des Ducs is not fully integrated; it will be years before it is, but it is irresistible now. Having opened numerous Barthods from 2019, I can safely say that this is one of the more accessible years in recent memory.... The 2020 Hommage Jacques Perrin is my first. Knowing it would be incredibly young, I hesitated when asked about it. I have already written about Jacques Carillon many times, my unconditional love for his wines is not something new. The 2013 Les Referts is just yet another confirmation that no one in the whole of white Burgundy can match these levels of inner finesse. These Pulignys won me over even in hot vintages, but in my opinion, to experience their true greatness first-hand, you need to taste them in cool ones. It shows the signature lightfooted body with a tailor-made, solid structure and a silky-smooth texture, delivering aromatic tones of spring herbs, meadow flowers, Meyer lemon and green mango. Deeply stony and scratchy in profile yet candid in its grapefruit-flavored acids, it offers great lenght. Beautiful aromatic nose with pink grapefruit, fresh butter, tangerine, spring flowers and herbs. One of those evenings with a little too much laughter, a little too much wine, and a little too much food. In other words, pretty much perfect. My favorites were the 02 Salon, 90 Krug Collection, and the 90 Vogue Musigny, all en magnum. The Salon was incredibly fresh, energetic and poised. Was impressed with this wine from 750ml earlier this year and this magnum only served to confirm my earlier impressions. Already a great and will only get better. I’ve had 90 Krug vintage on numerous occasions and admittedly, it has not been my favorite Krug vintage as I have oftentimes found the wine riper and flabbier than what I generally prefer. However, the larger format and the fact that this is a collection bottling meant this was a totally different beast. I found this had much more tension on the palate while retaining its nutty, caramelized nose and secondary layers. 90 Vogue Musigny a complete surprise. I’m aware that this vintage of Vogue Musigny is somewhat controversial with mixed reviews but judging by this bottle, i’m a fan. Ultra expressive nose (I thought it was Prieure Roch from the nose), light footed, pure red fruit, silky texture. Very un-Vogue like? The vinification and aging is done in oak barrels. A pressing and settling from 12 to 18 hours is done prior to racking the juice to barrel, where the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur. Aging is done on the fine lees for one year. The maximum is done to allow for the full expression of the soil, using at the most 20 – 25% new oak, even for the Grands Crus, to be sure to preserve the best expression of their terroir. Minerality, finesse and the terroir expression are what are sought after. One more blind bottle from @anthogz69 during our April tasting in Lyon. So many good bottles that night, most having showed well, except for the 2002 Coche Meursault that was corked! Quite pale yellow robe in the glass. The wine looks young. A little bit of candle wax on the nose. Slight reduction. A touch of honey with white flowers and some white fruits, juicy, fresh and young. The reduction is PYCM-typed. More gun powder and firecrackers. A nice nose to begin with! The palate is rather powerful with good concentration and a little bit too much of alcohol. More reduction and quite heavy influence of oak still, even if this gives a charming toasted aspect with bread and toast. Vanilla as well with a touch of coco. Fatty texture with medium acidity. No so focused or balanced, the palate lacks refinement. As a conclusion, very nice nose but the palate would require further oak integration for better balance and let the fruit be expressed more clearly. A good bottle though. Nebbiolos were all firing: Roagnas both so well integrated; 13 Burlotto Acclivi soft and gentle; 09 Rinaldi Brunate gorgeous and complete; 05 Conterno Francia a dark fruited powerhouse. 16 CLB VR incredibly seductive and alluring. 16 Duroche Jeunes Rois pure red fruit. 2004 Domaine Louis Carillon et Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières The name Carillon in Puligny could be traced back to 1520, although the label only says 1632. They own around 12ha of vineyards with only one grand cru, a very small plot of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The last vintage of the winery was 2009 following the split of the Louis’ sons🧐 The 2004 vintage is definitely not an excellent vintage, some may even consider as one of the worse ones for reds, but whites are still very elegant and mineral. Attaque puissante, fruitée sur des saveurs de jus de citron avec une minéralité sous-jacente. Finale zestée et sapide. Très bon. 16/20. 👉Vincent Latour - Vieilles vignes - Notes d'aubépine, de cailloux frottés. Attaque puissance, texture grasse et tapissante. Longue finale agrumée. 16,5/20. 👉Sylvain Langoureau - Deux 1er cru oxydés (Premox) 👉Gérard Thomas - 1er cru La Garenne - Notes de réduction, de coquille d'huitre, de citron. Attaque sur le citron confit, jus concentré, finale saline et zestée. Très bel équilibre. 17/20. 👉Charles Allexant - 1er cru Les Folatières - Nez magnifique d'une grande élégance sur des notes d'aubépines, de beurre frais, de miel. Attaque puissante et fruitée. 18.5/20 (70€) 🇫🇷(🇬🇧👇🏻) Bon …. Voilà un flacon qui m’a totalement époustouflé. On est tout de même pas loin d’une certaine idée de la perfection, de mon point de vue en tout cas. Le domaine a été créé au XVIeme siècle et séparé entre les frères François et Jacques en 2010. Jacques hérite de 5,5 hectares de vignes autour de Puligny-Montrachet, dont une parcelle de 0,5 hectares en Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Il privilégie un élèvage avec peu de fûts neufs, plutôt court (1 an) et complété par 6 mois en cuve. Le résultat est époustouflant pour un vin qui atteint probablement un optimum de dégustation à 8 ans. Il offre un feu d’artifice d’amers, de notes florales, de notes briochées légères et d’un fruit magnifique, le tout porté par une remarquable amplitude. Niveau grand cru probablement, premier cru assurément pour cette appellation village au rapport qualité prix de 20/20. Vive la Bourgogne ! … 🇬🇧 Well …. This is a bottle that totally blew me away. We are still not far from a certain idea of perfection, from my point of view anyway. The estate was created in the 16th century and separated between the brothers François and Jacques in 2010. Jacques inherits 5.5 hectares of vines around Puligny-Montrachet, including a 0.5 hectare plot in Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. He favors aging with few new barrels, rather short (1 year) and completed by 6 months in vats. The result is breathtaking for a wine which probably reaches its optimum tasting point at 8 years. It offers a fireworks display of bitters, floral notes, light brioche notes and magnificent fruit, all carried by a remarkable amplitude. Grand cru level probably, definitely premier cru for this village appellation with a 20/20 value for money. 2012 Puligny 1er Les Referts by Jacques Carillon. One of the best whites had this year and much more open than the 2015 earlier in the year. Good to see how this parcel known to take a long time to come around properly express itself. Excellent depth to the redolent ripe golden pear sweetness that is transparent and almost levitating on the palate. Great poise with bright shimmering minerality into the long finish. Keeps inviting you back to the glass for more. Was dry in the past week. Haven’t had anything substantial in a while… so good to break that dry spell with a nice bottle of #krug and #pulignymontrachet for a lighthearted Friday. Can’t really remember the last time I had a Krug, but the 170th edition #grandecuvee certainly did not disappoint. Light, toast, fresh zest with fine smooth bubbles. One can never get tired of a Krug and any occasion that a bottle is opened is pretty much a good occasion 🤤 Then comes the #puligny from #jacquescarillon. I really like this bottle. When first popped opened there was a strong acidic nose. I was afraid it would have been too acidic so I let it sit for 2 hours. Good thing I did! See below why… I couldn’t quite pinpoint what I liked about it. It all just came so well together. Smooth hint of buttery finish (like a baby’s butt cheeks 😂) with a tinge of citrus. Light oaky nose like smelling flowers on a bright sunny field. So then … I finally realise why I couldn’t pinpoint why I liked it so much… because it’s just so balanced!!! Ah!!! No one part of the #puligny was screaming and that’s a good thing. Instead each note was just singing the right timbre without being too loud. There was no ugly dog howling sensation… what I had was an orchestra! What a bottle! Thank you friends who popped by for a simple housewarming evening last night! This date was planned way before we knew there would be a Presidential elections and it turned out to as well as I hoped. Credit especially to Private chef @pierceyee for the superb line up of cuisine curated for the evening and @robin.tzw for bringing heaps of fresh japanese sashimi / uni / oysters. They say good things come in 3 and we were blessed the have 3 terrific trio flights of wine Flight 1 (Burg Chardonnay) 3 very different chardonnay in terms of style, but what stand out for me in terms of structure and finesse is Olivier Leflaive Les Pucelles PM 2017 Flight 2 (Italian Barolo) What a treat and my first time tasting the 1996 Aldo Conterno Cicala Barolo from tim and the 1999 Massolino Vigna Rionda Barolo from robin.Both wines prove that age is not a barrier when it comes to fine wines. But my star of the evening would still be the Giuseppe Rinaldi Tre Tine 2017! So youthful but yet approachabe. Elegance with substance. First red to be drank finish tells the story! Flight 3 (Italian Brunellos) All the big names were here for the fight off! Salvioni 1999, still so darkfruited and concentrated that i thought it may be a 100% super tusc cab franc. Tasty treat by @waltwong79 and no surprise my dear friend @gaffie07 brought his fav 2016 Poggio Di Soto Riserva. Well deserved 100 points from RP and am deeply blessed to have tasted it twice within a month! Still the wine of the trio to beat! Cerbaiona 2016 was popped and poured by me and i guess we could not master enough time nor had the energy to fully sample it. I shall taste it abit later today to see how its evolved. Party was started of course by a Cedric Bouchard Val Vilaine Blanc De Noir 2019. Very expressive fruits and beautiful acidity and salinity! One champy ready to enter its drinking window!
