A few nights ago I completed the filmography of one of my all-time favorite directors, Michael Mann, and tonight I completed the filmography of my undisputed all-time favorite director: John Carpenter. It took me years to track down all 23 of his films and though I enjoy the thrill of hunting for movies, tracking down the final few, including Elvis (1979), was dragging on so I just caved and ordered them online. My earliest movie memory is watching John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China (1986) around the age of four and I credit the magic of that film for igniting my passion for the art form. I could go on forever about how much Carpenter's films have meant to me, but I'll save that for another time. While watching Carpenter's made-for-TV Elvis film, I was in awe of his mastery, economy, and practicality as a filmmaker in his prime through his ability to get the absolute most out of what he had to work with, even if he was hampered by a limited budget and other narrative restrictions. Also, this film was his first pairing with Kurt Russell, a pairing which would be the basis of much of his best work. It was awesome to see the genesis of that and the birth of Kurt Russell as a legitimate actor breaking free from the shackles of Disney. (Continued in comments)

Finally picked up my own copy of John Carpenter's Body Bags (1993) and revisited it today. It's a fun little low-budget, Showtime-produced horror anthology movie with the first two stories being directed by Carpenter and the final story directed by Tobe Hooper. Each one is fun, quirky, and loaded with cult and horror icons, many of whom are Carpenter regulars. Each story also touches on a different subgenre of horror, covering slasher, cosmic, and body horror. The Carpenter stories are the best, but overall the best part of watching Body Bags is Carpenter himself playing the Cryptkeeper-esque host who introduces each story. This is my 22nd of 23 films from my all-time favorite director, John Carpenter, and I was pleasantly surprised by Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) given its bad reputation as the movie that began the breaking of Carpenter's spirit after the horrible experience of working with Chevy Chase. For those who enjoy watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) every December, you should know that Chase is considered one of the biggest assholes to ever work in Hollywood, if you haven't heard already. I've known for years and still enjoy it every year, though. As much of a dick as he allegedly is, Chase is serviceable in the lead and Sam Neill is excellent as always. Carpenter's ability to stretch a budget and up the production value of his work is here as well, especially with amazing effects work from ILM. I love invisible man movies like The Invisible Man (1933) and Hollow Man (2000) for the effects wizardry and I had the same jaw-dropping awe with plenty of scenes here. It took a little while, however, to get used to Carpenter's choice to have Chase visible to the audience in some scenes, but most of the time it makes sense for whatever physical acting Chase needs to do. My main criticisms of the movie are that it's a comedy that's not very funny, it's a thriller that's not thrilling, and it's sorely missing an accompanying Carpenter score. I'm always excited to watch a John Carpenter film for the first time, but with late-period Carpenter that excitement's always mixed with a sense of dread and obligation. Ghosts of Mars (2001) is my 21st of Carpenter's 23 films; my assessment: very slightly underrated. This movie has a terrible reputation, but aside from the SciFi Channel original movie-esque production values and mostly horrible performances, both of which I've gotten used to in later Carpenter films, it's somewhat enjoyable. It's an action movie with a touch of sci-fi, made on a modest budget but with immense passion. The additional materials included in this beautiful edition put the entire production in a slightly different light on and I recommend checking it all out. ‘They Live 35th Anniversary’ Theater: Hazlet Cinemark 12 Time: 9/3/2023 4:00pm Review: I saw this movie for the first time around 2016 and it blew my mind! It afterwards put me into a spiral fascination with John Carpenter films + soundtracks. It is about a traveler who stumbles upon the true identity of the leaders of Earth. It is both dark, action packed, funny, scary, and most importantly, ICONIC! Famed WWF star Roddy Piper starred as the main character, and delivered quite a performance. Memorable lines with charm, and swagger. Keith David returns for his 2nd carpenter film role, and is one of the best in the sci-fi/horror world. The soundtrack was amazing to hear in the theater! You can feel the synth, and energy carpenter wanted to convey with his shots. Not sure if it was 4k or 1080 but the color was amazing in the theater presentation. The sounds during the famous fight scene hit you hard with the surround sound. People were laughing in the audience during certain falls. Before the film started, John carpenter delivered a introduction message which was a great surprise. They also had some cool trivia prices prior to the showing!
