Daniel Espinosa's 2017 science fiction horror was one I wanted to watch, in truth, because of a funny interview clip. I was more than aware of the rather mediocre reviews, but I figured I'd give it a watch regardless. I had read a number of reviews saying that the film was essentially a modern remake of Ridley Scott's 'Alien', and having watched both, I would tend to agree. It's by no means a carbon copy, but it is very similar in its premise. The story is actually quite decent, in fairness. Although, it was one of those narratives where the characters seem to make avoidable mistake after avoidable mistake, and while I'm not saying people in real life would do any better necessarily, I still found it hard to believe some of the decisions made. The ending was good, but, if I'm being honest, it was also very predictable. That said, I don't mind a predictable ending, if it's executed effectively. In the case of this film, I think Espinosa achieved that. On the whole, the story was very intense, and built heavily on the foundations of both the science fiction and horror genres. Jake Ghyllenhaal is a very reliable actor. He almost never gives a bad performance, and the same applies here. It's by no means his best, but he once again proves why he is such a dependable face. I think he was able to outperform the screenplay, to deliver a good accout of himself. I think Rebecca Ferguson had some very good moments in the second half of the film, but I wasn't so keen on what she displayed in the first half. However, I will concede that she wasn't helped by some mediocre writing at times. She definitely won me over by the time the film ended though. The other actor performances are on the FIR Blog and Letterboxd. Overall, this was actually a lot better than I anticipated. Sure, it was trope-ridden and semi-predictable, but it was also pretty exciting, especially in the final few minutes. All-in-all, this is a solid sci-fi horror, even if it definitely has some issues. Don’t think it’s much of a spoiler alert to say that things take a decided turn for the worse. Obvious shades of Alien and The Thing so It’s not exactly original but it’s good enough to be at least mentioned alongside those classics. Gripping, tense, awesome cinematography and surprisingly moving at times with a brilliant ending. Wish I’d seen it at the cinema. "Life" from the year 2017 (104 minutes, science fiction horror) 🌍 As astronauts discover the first evidence of extra-terrestrial life on Mars, they begin realising that the life form is extremely intelligent and hostile. 🌎 Seeing this movie on Netflix and liking the story and actors, we decided to give a watch. The similarities of the premise to the Alien movies is pretty apparent. I was looking forward to seeing how the rather simple premise would be adapted and modernised, but the alien, plot and characters are not very interesting and far inferior to 'Alien'. Sadly the plot also has quite a few plotholes and inconsistencies, making it sometimes rather irritating and confusing to watch. All performances are fine, with none of them standing out. I found the characterization of the limited characters too one-dimentional. Especially the main two leads could have been done much better in order to make the audience empathise more with them. Regarding the end, I think I did like it, as bleak as it is. 🌏 All in all, I would recommend this movie to isolating athmospheres and scifi horror stories. Hace poco volvimos a ver Life, del 2017, y está bastante, pero bastante bien, una película de ciencia ficción y terror donde unos científicos en la Estación Espacial Internacional descubren vida alienígena, y la maravilla pronto se vuelve pesadilla cuando ese simpático bichito resulta más agresivo y maligno que lo esperado. Esta películo tuvo críticas fuertes cuando salió, con mucha gente comparándola negativamente con Alien, que es una cosa bien re-boluda, como los zopencos que comparan cualquier obra nueva de fantasía medieval con El Señor de los Anillos. Ah, ok, qué lástima que esto no le llega a una obra que sale una vez por generación y que cambió a la ficción para siempre. Necio. Curiosamente, Alien también tuvo críticas mixtas cuando salió, así que fíjate. En fin, Life tiene a científicos haciendo cosas de científicos y se siente ese fundamento realista bastante. Crítica de #MorbiusLaPelicula #MorbiustheMovie Todos los que nos criamos en #los90 , y vimos la famosa serie de animación de #SPIDERMAN (temporadas desde 1994 a 1996), conocemos a Michael Morbius, con lo cual, los más viejos, tanto por la serie de dibujos animados, como por los comics, sabíamos lo que íbamos a ver en la gran pantalla. Creo que el público ha sido bastante duro con esta cinta, pero creo que ha sido porque talvez no conocen a dicho personaje (tal vez puede ser también que el público está cansado de ver películas de vampiros con superpoderes, como paso con #DraculaUntold, en 2014). Aun así, al igual que vimos a #MichaelKeaton pasar del #BatmanTimBurton al #TheVulture del nuevo #Spiderman, ahora vemos a Jared Leto de pasar a convertirse del #Joker de #DavidAyer (que ya sabemos que no fue su mejor interpretación), a #Morbius un superhéroe (o en este caso un antiheroe). En esta película de #DanielEspinosa, un director que ha hecho desde #SafeHouse2012 (Protagonizada por #DenzelWashington y RyanReynolds) a #ElNiño44 (Con #TomHardy y #GaryOldman), pasando por #LIFE2017, con esta cinta se sitúa en una atmósfera bien distinta de la cual estaba acostumbrado en su ecosistema habitual. Un relato de vampiros que sorprende más que gratamente, recordándonos a películas de estilo de #InterviewWithTheVampire o #TaleoftheMummy .Llevaba esperando esta cinta de Marvel como agua de mayo y por supuesto, la espera ha merecido la pena, ya que ha acabado siendo interesante y repleta de buenísimas ideas. Dagegen war Alien ein Kirchenbesuch. Unzufrieden mit dem Ergebnis des Alien Spin Offs "Prometheus" hat der gute Garth Ennis sich immer mal wieder Gedanken rund um die engen, bizarren, beklemmenden und verstörenden Erzählelemente rund um eine Mannschaft, die sich alleine in den Weiten des Alls mit einem Fremdkörper befindet, der Besitz von manchen Crewmitgliedern nimmt gemacht. "Caliban" hat offensichtliche und teilweise nicht immer ganz so gut umgesetzte Elemente nach der Alien Formel, wie sie beispielsweise von dem modernen SciFi Horrorfilm Life meiner Einschätzung nach besser umgesetzt wurden, zu adaptieren versucht. Einiges gelingt ihm dabei sehr gut, anderes leider so gar nicht. Die negativen Punkte haben da leider insgesamt für mich überwogen. Denn positiv herauszustellen ist, dass der Horrorfaktor unfassbar gut funktioniert. Garth Ennis ist krass. War er schon bei Hellblazer, sowie noch ausgeprägter bei Preacher und the Boys, aber das Ding hier ist echt brutal ohne Ende. Ich war glaube ich noch nie von Comicbildern so geschockt, bzw. aus der Ruhe gebracht und habe mich ein Stück weit wie die Figuren machtlos und ausgeliefert gefühlt, wie bei diesem Werk. Kosmischer Horror mal anders und dabei überraschend vielfältig und abwechslungsreich. Was der Horror aber kann, da scheitern leider die meisten anderen Handlungselemente. Die Geschichte ist vom Anfang bis zum Ende leider absolut vorhersehbar und die Charaktere funktionierten mit einer Ausnahme leider so gar nicht für mich. Leider sind diese ebenfalls sehr vorhersehbar und eindimensional. Eine Figur hat mich sogar nahezu genervt, was leider der Hauptcharakter war. Ich würde sagen Horror-Fans und Garth Ennis Hardcore Freunde, die Comics und Nervenkitzel mögen sollten hier definitiv ihren du Spaß haben. Für wen es sonst was ist kann jeder selbst entscheiden. Life (2017) Review So I just finished rewatching this, and here are my thoughts. I hadn’t seen this film in years, but I was excited to revisit it. And honestly, this film has become one of my favorite sci-fi horror films. The acting all around is spectacular but Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson both gave standout performances. One of the best aspects of this film is it’s absolutely insane tension. The film is often times rather terrifying and extremely intense, and that’s partly due to a fantastic script. This film is way smarter than I remembered it being, and it continuously impressed me with how creative it was. The film is also really brutal, and the film is a rather hard R which I loved. The usage of blood was really great here, and offered for some unique visuals. I also thought the cinematography and direction were both outstanding, with a surprising amount of camera movement. I also thought the creature design was fantastic and surprisingly unique. SUMMARY: A team of astronauts discover a rapidly evolving alien life form . THE STORY: Inspired by claustrophobic creature features before it scientific discoveries and celebrations quickly turns to fear and panic as the ever evolving and growing creature starts to wreak havoc, putting the two species own fears and survival instincts against each other. This is a tense sci-fi survival story with an effective twist ending . THE ACTING: This is a solid ensemble cast to make up the crew of the space station. Gyllenhaal does well as the lead but I enjoyed the whole cast. Reynolds was great without needing to be comedic and I always enjoy the work of Sanada. Ferguson also gives a strong performance as the team is picked off one by one . THE LOOK: I enjoyed the dark tone of the film without going too into the horror atmosphere. The setting all seemed very realistic and the challenges all plausible and effective. I enjoyed the gentle, innocent design of the alien, named Calvin, and especially liked the way it continued to evolve into something more intimidating . CRITICISMS: There isn’t the best character development and a few too many poor decisions, but nothing I felt negatively impacted the film. This movie seemed to get some bad reception due its scientific inaccuracies, but I rather enjoyed it and any scientific lapses weren’t an issue to me. I thought it was a effective film; tense, entertaining with an interesting alien and a cool twist ending .
