My next event is online and it’s Super Seconds Festival on the 11th and 12th May 🎉 The festival is a brilliant opportunity to sell work with small faults, damages or end of line stock, everything will be available in really limited numbers and all the listings will go live at 10am on the 11th May. The festival prompt for this week is ‘why I’m getting involved’ Super Seconds Festival is a bit of a no brainier for my business - I’ve always tried to limit waste, designing products so they fit perfectly to the width of fabric and utilising any offcuts I do get to make my waste not products you might have seen before. However, it’s inevitable that some items end up being seconds, especially as I’m really fussy with quality. I hate to see anything that’s useable and still beautiful get thrown in the bin when there could be a loving home for it. Rest is a wonderful thing isn't it? "Well, Duh!", you might say. But WOW .. We so quickly forget how to prioritise rest don't we? Not only is it good for our physical & mental health ( as is well documented), but also - it allows us to freely access our creativity, problem solving & decision making 'powers'. And without these, things get sticky very often. I've been staring at this bundle of off-cut fabrics since October ( I think) But only in the last few weeks, sitting staring into open spaces, have I been able to settle on a plan for them. 🌻This #FarmFriday we are dedicating to bring awareness to the importance that is compost to producing the 8,000 lbs. of food we donate to our community🌻 🌱Without @qbgcompost we would not be able to have the wealth of nutrition in our soils that is present to feed our crops! Our dark, rich soils are thanks to our residents for choosing to send their food scraps to us rather than the landfill, but most specifically to our compost team who process those food scraps to make compost, with the help of volunteers and interns! 🌱 Compost is food! 🐛 At QBG we demonstrate a closed loop system that is only possible because of our compost department. We utilize compost to grow crops, to then harvest produce, and then any food waste or horticultural waste gets turned into compost again, ending up back at the start of the cycle feeding our crops to provide food for hundreds of families in Queens! Not only this, but the compost team also offer a wealth of education, from outreach, to technical assistance, to classes on how to compost! 💚 Without funding after the budget cuts, our compost department will be facing a grave shift which will have an impact not only at QBG, but in our local community. SECOND HAND SEPTEMBER My shoot on Friday was really great in terms of community & sustainability. My necklaces are made from textile waste, that would have otherwise gone into landfill. I only ever order in what I think will work and sell. Then I pray that the heavens are looking down on me, or that you trust me enough!! I use local hair and make up artists on shoots, and look out for local models (often in coffee shops;)). We are a good looking bunch in the Scottish Borders! I bought all my clothes (four pieces), for my model Arwen from the @britishredcross on the Galashiels Douglas Bridge. As a forecaster with colours, buying is pretty effortless as I can always style pieces into trends or keep to classics by clever use of an accessory! I’m delighted to announce that we seem to have a new cohort of young ladies growing up with ‘vintage’ and pre-loved on their minds. And Arwen was delighted with the styles, colours and fit of her new/old wardrobe. It is in the back of my mind however that although the pull to the charity shops is obviously a good incentive. It is also worth bearing in mind the ‘excess’ of clothing produced from fast fashion companies, that spills out into ‘a good cause charity’ when the underlying factor is originally overproduction - often in not so good environments. But then I guess I wouldn’t be in business either. Or have to grow my cotton up in the fields… (is that the next plan???) This stuff keeps me awake at night! After spending a couple of years in the textile business, I learned more than I ever wanted to know (still not much, but enough). My key takeaway was this: this is a lot of waste. Like A LOT of waste. I didn't like that. This is why I print my yoga-wear to order. The product will literally not get made until you order it. This has the huge advantage of not leading to (too much) waste. It has a couple of disadvantages, though. The biggest one is that I am limited by manufacturer sizing. When I had my own textile brand I offered inclusive sizing, meaning anything from XXS through 5XL (plus custom sizing). Because we are all super different. Sadly, I can't do that now, though I still offer XS through XL At this time of year, another disadvantage is that the product won't arrive until about 3 weeks after you order it, maybe 4 due to the holiday traffic.
