DON’T GIVE UP JUST BECAUSE LIFE ‘GETS IN THE WAY’ - It’s now been just short of a month since I’ve had one child or the other at home 🤪 (first the Easter holidays and then my son home as he recovers from a routine op) and it’s got me thinking about a conversation I often have with clients – how we deal with things when life 'gets in the way' and our usual routine is disrupted. For the past few weeks, I’ve had much less time to myself, missed gym sessions, over the holidays more trips out and a lot of convenience eating, currently disturbed sleep and increased time off work which, when self-employed, is always a tad stressful! And, whilst I’m probably not feeling as good as I usually do because of my change in routine, I’m still doing the bits I can – eating well when I can, staying hydrated, exercising at home where possible and managing my mindset. I often hear people say that, when they get thrown off course, they find it hard to get back on track, sometimes even that they feel it renders all their efforts to date pointless. Life is life though and, especially when you have other humans who rely on you, routine can so often be thrown up in the air. ✨ I think a really helpful mindset to adopt is that, whilst you may not be able to do everything you want to every day, you can certainly always do something. And following healthy habits is a lifelong affair, not any kind of short-term fix ❤️ Hopefully, you can get back to your ideal routine in due course and nothing will have been lost. And, if what you have going on is more long-term, it’s just a case of being realistic and making some adjustments. Have you even judged yourself for negative thinking? For judging others? For thinking the worst and having your mind go to a dark place? There's the thought ... and then there's the thought about the thought. Sounds strange, but YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS. Just because you have a negative thought or a hundred or a thousand a day, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. It has been estimated that humans have up to sixty thousand thoughts per day and up to 80% of them are negative!!! Even if the truth is half these figures, that's still A LOT of negative thoughts. So everyone has these thoughts, but some people tend to focus on them more than others. Having negative thoughts means nothing bad about you. It just means you have a functional brain that is active. It also means that you are aware of your thinking, a quality that makes you human, not bad in any way. So next time your mind takes you on a path of negativity, just let those thoughts float in your brain 🧠 and watch them with curiosity like you'd watch an interesting movie. You don't have to judge them or change them in any way. But if you find that you do judge them, don't judge yourself for doing so.😜That's all part of being human 👩, too! A woman physician was seeing all the amazing successes that her colleagues had achieved over the last year. Instead of gaining inspiration from these achievements, she used them against herself. She used them as evidence of all the things she lacked and concluded she was a “failure”. When you engage in compare and despair, you suffer. Not only do you end up feeling terrible, but it keeps you stuck and less motivated to do the work to get your own results. We are all climbing our own ladder in this life. Our rungs are different than our neighbors’. When you feel bad about yourself you can look down and marvel at how far you’ve come. If your neighbor is on a higher rung, you can marvel that it’s possible to get up there and be inspired to keep going. When was the last time you felt crazy confident? What did you believe about yourself at that very moment? Was there something going on in your life that helped mold that belief in you? If you aren't feeling crazy confident today. No worries. Why not borrow your confidence from the last time you DID feel crazy confident? Close your eyes and go back to the last time you remember that feeling and get back into that feeling. What were you doing? What were you wearing? Who were you spending time with? Feel in your body what that moment in time was like. Make your moves today from that feeling. The more you practice this, the easier it will be to summon confidence when you need it. Here's a BIG secret. People who "seem" confident are NOT always confident. They practice behaviors, mental exercises, and have internal dialog that stimulates their belief in themselves. I heard an interview with a recovered drug and alcohol addict who responded with the following when asked what was his “bottom”: “My bottom was when I looked around and realized I had no one left to blame for my problems.” That’s when his life turned around and he began to recover. The plant, well that belongs to our daughter!⁣We raised our kids aboard this sailboat in the Caribbean and now Khaya Manzi has done a full circle and our daughter took over as owner/captain for 2 years while she lived in Bonaire. There are two ways of looking at challenges: From a focus on the problem, or a focus on the solution. As humans, we seem to have a preference for one or the other. Is is nature? Nurture? I have no theories to offer. But I do have this... You are inherently capable of generating solutions. Even if the first place your mind goes is to the problem, you can choose to change your focus. You can lean into our mantra for this week: I naturally generate solutions. I am, admittedly, a problem focused human. I know how it feels to have your mind offer you a laundry list of things that are wrong, followed by more thoughts about what will go wrong if you take action towards a solution. I also know that thoughts aren't facts, and that we can choose which thoughts we attend to. So, your brain says you have a problem? Great. Let your brain say that. Don't focus on it, just let it be there. Have a thought about a problem and then get on with your life, get on with thinking about solutions. Practice wild creativity, throwing out solutions that seem ridiculously far-fetched. Practice generativity, coming up with as many solutions as you can in two minutes, regardless of quality. Practice using evidence; think of similar problems you have solved or seen solved and recall times when you were able to find the answers, even if you didn't have them at the outset. This week, choose to focus on solutions. Make space in your head for this thought: I naturally generate solutions. Notice any resistance to this idea. Invite your shadows forward into your light. They can help you generate solutions, too! Are you a problem or solution focused human? I’ll let you in on a little known fact about me… I am terrible with plants or anything green 🌴🌲🍀🌳🎋😊 I don’t understand them and despite my best efforts, I always manage to kill off any green potted thing someone gives me. Which is why I find it kind of hilarious when people gift me a plant - and also terrifying. We all have our own strengths, areas for improvement and areas where we are utterly useless. For me, I’ll admit I’m hopeless when it comes to keeping something green alive, and I’ve now come to accept this about myself without judgment. We each have our role to play in this world, a role that only one person can play because you are 💯 unique. My strengths? Truth be told I’ve got a few 😊… But seeing what is possible for you in your life, both now and in the future, in such clarity that is not yet available to you, is one that I think is pretty special. We are all hindered in some way by the limitations our own brains impose on us. I can help you not only become aware of these, but learn to successfully navigate through them so that you too begin to realise what is possible and start to make it a reality. I went to watch my niece play volleyball last nigh. The girls played hard, they messed up some, and they played amazing much of the time too! It was hard to see the end result be a loss. As I drove home, I contemplated how much I saw growth on the court. Each of the girls made mistakes. They are also making progress and getting better. They are beginning to gel as a team and they are finding their stride. The win or loss is only as important as you make it. Is it important to win? Yes, I would say so. I am competitive. What is MORE important than winning? Learning when you don't win!!! Each loss can defeat you or turn into your greatest win. Your choice! There are times we need to lose to learn. When you learn from a loss it's special. It has a way of sticking with you. It has a way of molding you into a different person. There is ONE requirement. You have to be willing to DO the learning. You could choose to just walk away upset or defeated. OR You can ACTIVELY learn. Ask yourself these three simple questions. Be curious. DIG. I mean, REALLY DIG. *********************************************************** *What went right? *What went wrong? *How can I do it differently next time? *********************************************************** Keep your answers factual and non-judgmental. It is no joke when it comes to potential distractions and things you COULD be doing. It is designed to overwhelm you, So ...... step back slow down...because “Those who work SMARTER will always prevail”. If you're not sure what to do next, here is what I recommend: * Write a list of ALL the things you think you... *should* be doing. * Prioritize those items as "must dos", "a good idea to dos" and "maybes". * Put the "maybes" away for now. * Look at the "must dos" and figure out what you can outsource...delegate as much of it as you can. * Pick a "good idea to do" and do it 100%. Negative thought loop Can you stop the negative thoughts? No. That’s the honest answer. But you can learn to manage them so that you don’t get into this loop. When you have negative thoughts about your life, your health, your illness it can set you on a path that unmanaged can spiral. Negative thoughts will ⬇️ your joy and ⬆️ your stress. Because negative thoughts ⬆️ your stress your body starts to go into flight or flight. This ⬆️⬆️⬆️ your stress even more. When your stress is up your immune system goes ⬇️. If your immune system is already trying to keep up to your illness this does not support health building. ❌ This can lead to you feeling 🥺🤒🤯 which impacts your immune system even more and ⬇️ your emotional and mental health. This throws you back into the loop. And so it continues. Breaking this thought loop can be done. And you don’t have to do it alone. In fact, when you work with a coach who knows how to guide you through your thoughts and how to create strategies to manage them you are ⬆️⬆️⬆️ your ability to not allow your negative or fear-filled thoughts control your day to day life. Doesn’t that sound better than sitting in fear and overwhelm, allowing your jerk brain to control your life? 🌈HAPPINESS ©YappariStory Happiness equals Reality minus Expectations. According to Tom Magliozzi, we are generally happy when we better manage the reality of life. Our unreasonably high expectations e.g. what our loved ones should or should not do and say, are often a recipe for disappointment and unhappiness. We cannot control another's thoughts, emotions and behaviours. The only thing we can do is to manage our expectations. As the saying goes, do your best and God will take care of the rest. Some authoritative parents like to influence what their children do and think, so much so that they become some sort of 'control freaks' and distress their young ones. The only result these parents often get is rebellious kids and teens. Similarly, some people try way too hard to influence their lovers, friends and even business partners, wanting another to think exactly like them, do exactly like they do, and say what they expect to be said... Without saying, what they get: - good friends turning sour - lovers hating each other - marriages becoming acrimonious, ending up in separation and/or divorce. The list goes on and on... What we may want to consider is this: Give whatever you can and expect nothing in return. Love with all your heart and set them free, if they love you, they will come back to you and be yours forever. And most importantly, be thankful for all things.
