There was a time in my life when I felt just like you. I was in a really dark space with my health, and it seemed like nothing I did delivered the result I was looking for. I ate healthy and gained weight. I slept 7+ hours a night and woke up exhausted. I worked out 5 days a week and my pants kept getting tighter. When I was caught up in the diet rollercoaster, it was never just.. dinner with friends. It was stressful. I spent hours studying the menu trying to calculate lowest calorie options (this was before they were on the menu â which ironically I now wish they werenât!). Then I either chose that option and felt completely unsatisfied â so it often led to a binge after. Or I chose the high calorie option having been depriving myself and that led to feelings of guilt, disgust and then a period of either still binging or straight onto restriction, whether cutting my calories drastically or increasing my exercise to âburn it offâ. And so you can see why it was pretty stressful. If youâre stuck in that unhealthy relationship with food and dieting then maybe this resonates with you too. I promise you the answer does not lie in another diet. It doesnât lie in restricting your calories, or forcing yourself to do extra exercise, or beating yourself up. We have so much emotion and mental energy wrapped up in our relationship with food and our body, it can seem the most important over everything. But what is important? So letâs start off by agreeing what âtonedâ really means. âTonedâ means visible lean curvy muscle definition and little to no stubborn body fat. - I get messages every single day from people who want to know how to get more lean, and more defined. We could really over complicate this, but letâs keep it simple, shall we? - You need to move athletically and build muscle to be and look âtonedâ. So letâs get out there and put our bodies in motion and lift some heavy weight in different rep ranges. Focus on getting strong. Really strong. Heavy is a relative term - what is heavy to you may not be heavy to another. Find YOUR heavy and go! - ð You will want to keep your calories in check and make sure you get enough protein. And please please donât avoid carbs. You want to build some muscle? You gotta have carbs. Plus, carbs = life - ðµConsistency is probably the most important part of the equation, and itâs the thing I see that is missing most often. - For some reason the expectation of perfection still looms out there. Screw perfection - consistency is what will win out - every single time. - â¡ïžWhat not to do to get toned? - âEndless hours of cardio. Hey, if you love cardio, then by all means, do some. Just donât have cardio become your main focus. The dietary advice that is constantly given by healthcare providers and dietitians should in principle fix the underlying diseases if it were true. The American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association are pros at cookie cutter dietary advice that doesnât work for 95% of people. People are ever dependent on medications. So the simple question I ask is âhow would the advice change if we did NOT have medications for diabetes and hypertension?â because I guarantee you that the conventional advice will fail 9 out of 10 times because it does not address the root cause. Type 2 diabetes for instance, is a disease of severe insulin resistance. Cutting fat or eating carbs (whole grains), will not fix the insulin resistance problem. However, cutting carbs will reduce the need for insulin and over time reverse insulin resistance and in turn reverse type 2 diabetes. Similarly, hypertension is not a salt intake problem; itâs a salt retention problem. For 90% of people with primary hypertension, the cause of salt retention is excess insulin, which forces the kidney to retain salt and water. So reducing salt will have a marginal effect at best. Reducing carbs, however, will reduce insulin and allows the kidneys to dump excess salt and water, leading to improved blood pressure. When you apply common sense and understand the root cause of a disease, the solution becomes obvious. . .
