The grade 5's started the day with a presentation teaching us about Terry and his journey across Canada. The school ran as a community along a path lined with encouraging students holding posters marking each of Terry's destinations across Canada! “Of all Canadians, I love Terry Fox best. Here was a young man facing the tremendous personal challenge of overcoming cancer and losing a leg, yet he still persisted on his selfless quest of running across Canada for the benefit of people he did not know. I remembered seeing video footage of when he had been forced to stop — he said to the reporter, “All I know is that if I can get back out there, I will.” To pay our respects to such humility, we made a stop at his memorial in Thunder Bay, the farthest he had managed to come. There was something special about being there, looking out over Lake Superior and seeing all the visitors he was still attracting. The Winnipeg-born Fox is a victim of osteogenic sarcoma - a rare form of bone cancer. He will end his run on September 1st in Thunder Bay, Ontario, when cancer is discovered in his lungs. This day in history: The Marathon began on April 12, 1980, when Fox dipped his right leg in the Atlantic Ocean near St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and filled two large bottles with ocean water. Terry was an 18-year-old first year Kinesiology student at SFU and a member of the SFU junior varsity basketball team in 1977 when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His right leg was amputated six inches above the knee, and he underwent chemotherapy. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. The Royal BC Museum and the Terry Fox Centre have proudly entered into a 20-year long-term partnership to protect and preserve the iconic Terry Fox collection. The collection, which remains in the ownership of the Fox family, includes a number of items owned and worn by Terry, including the shoes and prosthetic leg he wore on his daily marathons, the Marathon of Hope van, and a large collection of letters written to Terry by school children from across the country. Why it’s on my list: As expressed in Bucket List #85, it’s important to understand important Canadian events in our history - one impactful one is Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope run. The journey lasted 143 days and 5373 kilometers before Terry Fox had to stop his run as cancer had spread to his lungs. There is currently a monument just outside of Thunder Bay where Terry stopped his run. I would love to pay my respects at this spot and reflect on his contribution to our history. Why it’s on my list: As a Canadian it’s important to understand our history, and a huge Canadian icon is Terry Fox, who, after being diagnosed with cancer, decided to raise awareness and funds by running the “Marathon of Hope” across Canada. This feat was made even more incredible because he was running this distance with one artificial leg (which he had to have removed because of his cancer). He started in St. John’s, Newfoundland - Mile 0 - unfortunately he only made it to Thunder Bay, Ontario before he was forced to stop running when they discovered that the cancer had spread to his lungs. An incredible journey - 143 days and 5373 kilometers. MARCH 21 #Circumnavigation 1985- #RickHansen (@rickhansenfdn) was born in 1957 in Port Alberni, British Columbia, #Canada. At the age of 15, Hansen was involved in a car crash which paralyzed him from the waist down. Hansen worked through rehabilitation and became the first student with a physical disability to graduate the University of BC in #physicaleducation. Hansen became a Paralympic athlete and won six medals in two #ParalympicGames, including gold in the 1984 Stoke Mandeville marathon 4 event. Inspired by #TerryFox’s #MarathonofHope, Hansen planned for a global circumnavigation in the name of spinal injury medical research called the Man in Motion World Tour. #OTD, Hansen began his circumnavigation by setting off from the Oakridge Mall in #Vancouver in front of about 300 spectators, including Fox’s parents. Hansen began by heading south down the US’s west coast before crossing the American South, arriving in Miami, Florida on 24 Jun. Hansen would then cross the British Isles, Finland, the Soviet Union, Poland and across the Alps before arriving in Vatican City on 27 Nov. Hansen would continue across parts of New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan and the Middle East. On 15 Jun 1986, Hansen arrived back in Miami to travel up the eastern seaboard before arriving in St. John’s, Newfoundland on 24 Aug. Hansen would travel across the entirety of Canada, arriving back in Vancouver on 22 May 1987. Over the tour, Hansen would travel over 40,000km (24,850mi) through 34 countries and raising $26M for spinal cord research and quality of life initiatives. Over 40 miles walked in 4 days at Expo West these last 4 days. I am a Hope Salesman. My job is to visit our current partners making a difference and to meet with new companies.
