This past weekend I was fortunate enough to help plant 25 Sugar Maples, with the #AmherstTreeBoard, and the Amherst Youth 4H Club. With permission from NYS DEC, these Sugar Maples were planted to help diversify and re-establish a healthy population of Sugar Maples in Walton Woods, Amherst’s only Old Growth Forest. Some of the oldest, and largest trees in the park, are also some of our favorite trees. Tulip Poplars! Check out this massive Tulip Tree that I like to call Grand Dad. Though not professionally measured, this tree most likely was a small sapling during the Civil War. Wow! As a member of the Amherst Tree Board, our purpose is to protect, and preserve Trees within the town, along with repopulating native trees, adding diversity and value to our ecosystem, while working with the local government to give our future generations a greener tomorrow. In addition, members of the board are focused on Public Outreach, Tree Giveaways, and Community Education. Come say hi, receive a free tree, and meet the Tree Board at Basset Park (Amherst, NY) on June 9th from 10am - 2pm.
🪴🌞🥥Ha'inga Melino 1 community women group of Fata'ulua 'Eua have finished up their first engagement with our staff to set up their homestead garden. The group also received their share of ready to sow seeds to which they will directly go into allocated areas of the garden for each member, while the seeds sown need to get to seedling before dividing amongst each member of the group. 🌽🍅🌎The assistance to community women groups allows increased access to nutritious foods where availability may be limited to rural and outlying islands. The support also engages aspects of climate-smart homestead gardening practices, including soil preparation, seed selection, organic farming techniques, pest control and post-harvest management. The engagement also facilitates for distribution of essential gardening inputs such as seeds, tools, organic fertilizers, fencing, land preparation to ensure necessary resources to start and maintain these gardens. #womeninagriculture #nutritionsecurity #foodsecurity #healthyTonga #organicfarming

🥬🍅Wrapping up their work in Fotua Community of Ha'apai - the team has successfully set up vegetable gardens for two community women groups registered under the names Fetokoni'aki Group and the Vaitapu Fetakinima Group. The team walked the group members through a planting training exercise directing the groups on how to plant their seeds that will go through a seedling process before transplanting and then handed out direct sow seeds that will forego this extra step. 🐞🌽The empowerment of women through these gardens cannot be overstated. By having control over food production, women can make informed decisions about their family's diet, improving overall health outcomes. Additionally, the ability to produce surplus crops offers women an opportunity to engage in local markets, generating disposable income and fostering economic independence. Nettle has anti-inflammatory properties and contains vitamin C, K, B, calcium, and magnesium. Neutralizing the stinging hairs on the stems and leaves is easy! Just blanch for one to two minutes. In addition to the hundreds of 🌲 we planted to create habitat and wind blocks, we just finished converting 1 acre from annual tilled crops to A no-till perennial food forest including Apples, Cherries, raspberries, blackberries, rhubarb, beneficial plants and culinary herbs. Organic permanent beds= first harrow in compost, gypsum and basalt in the fall and then again in the spring. Shape beds with power harrow and plant. Then add drip irrigation then cover beds with organic hay mulch first then organic wood chips on top.
