How do these children do it!! This week i was asked what i do for a job! “Oh! I don’t know how you do it! Hats off to you… I couldn’t do it!” I came away thinking about their words … but couldn’t help feeling - how do they do it! As I put myself in their shoes, these little children due to no fault of their own… lifted from their family - the only family they have ever known!! Transported in a social workers car, to our home, full of strangers, different smells, different scenery and different routine. Honestly, these children whilst it may be the right place to be… it must be so so hard. Hello Instagram! It’s been a while. I decided to give up social media for Lent, so I’m still getting back into the habit of posting. This year has been full of blessings and challenges. I’ve been confronting my religious trauma, while understanding that healing is a journey and accepting that I will always have to manage my triggers on some level. I’ve been reading a great book, “Do I Stay Christian? A Guide For The Doubters, The Disappointed, and The Disillusioned,” which has been helping me deconstruct a lot of the beliefs I was raised with. I’m learning through therapy that it is okay to have questions and doubts. It is wrong to demonize people who have questions or don’t understand certain beliefs or practices. It is unacceptable for religious leaders to shame people because they disagree with something or have a different perspective. Slowly but surely, I am learning how to exist in a world that doesn’t often make sense. There are some things we will never understand. This week we attended an appointment @kindercareni to chat with the newly appointed psychologist. Vikki is a psychologist who specialises in supporting foster children and carers. We have to be honest on route we both wondered why we were going and what we’d get out of it! Coming away it has to be said we both felt ‘lighter’ and encouraged that we were doing our best and good for little ones. Vikki validated so many of our concerns, helped us understand and ‘wonder why’ and recognise how trauma presents itself. It is hard to understand and really we will never know the extent of how trauma affects our little ones. Chatting it over, imagining ourselves in their shoes and having someone to help us see this is fabulous. Her support was 2nd to none It’s good to talk, it really really is.

#BondiIncident Please look after yourself and notice these signs and symptoms of normal reactions after a traumatic event such as this! . . The next few days as details of this horrific attack unfold...our social media and television will be full of narratives of the event..repetitive footage will be shared...witness accounts will be shared. If it causes distress to you..please know that you have control to give yourself a break and switch off. Most importantly...it is human nature to want to see more, hear more, however if it begins to feel overwhelming..please recognise those signs and symptoms of the impact on your well-being. It is normal to feel overwhelmed by witnessing traumatic events such as this one. Every reaction is normal, however the strong reactions should begin to subside as your body and mind process this confronting event over few days to 2 weeks. Common reactions to traumatic events include: - feelings on ‘high alert’ and ‘on watch’ for anything else that might happen -feeling emotionally numb - feeling emotional and upset -feeling very stressed and/or anxious - continuing to talk about what happened.. - overwhelming feeling of empathy to the victims of the attack.. -repeatedly playing parts of the event over in the mind or possibly avoiding shopping centres because you think.."what if it happens here" -continuing to watch rolling coverage of the traumatic event even when it makes you feel very overwhelmed 😪 If it does not get better please seek help.. You can call Lifeline on 13 11 14 to discuss what feelings are continue to come up for you. Talk to your friends and family as well if you have that safe space to do so. Lean in to the community as well. Please know this.. you are not crazy by feeling the way you feel...you are simply being human but help is available. Pls talk to your GP if this does not get better for you! This was me in 2020. The night before going in for masectomy and full auxiliary node clearance I was doing hand stands. I didn’t even comprehend that the Treatments of surgery, chemo, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy and bone infusions were going to damage my body to such a level. I am cancer free yet with the continued hormone treatments and bone infusions my body can’t do what it could. The warrior spirit within me refused to accept. I saw it as a kind of defeat. Like if I couldn’t do the splits again I’d failed to win. Who would come to a yoga teacher whose body was so broken? I kept fighting to get my old self back. To be that super fit strong yogini again. To get back to that woman doing all the crazy moves. In pushing myself so hard I only made things worse. The universe wanted me to learn the lesson of acceptance…surrender. The reminder that the tree that does not bow to the wind breaks. That lesson comes to us all as we slowly start to age and find our mobility and stamina lessened. For me the lesson came faster due to the rapid deterioration. Bruce Lee said, “Be like water…”. Fluid. We only cause harm to ourselves when we resist what is. I am reminded that Bruce Lee broke his back and recovered gently. I have decided to go gently with myself on my journey of wellness. Each event I do is made for others who are also on their own journey to be well in one way or another, or to stay well. My events are for you if you want to slow down and re balance your nervous system and help your body release what could make you sick. If you can’t do the splits or touch your toes come to me. Hot take on having healthier relationships of all kinds as we heal: I think this idea that once we’ve done enough work and once trauma responses aren’t driving our daily lives anymore that we’ll just stop “attracting” unhealthy, unavailable, or even “toxic” people into our lives is a fantasy. I mean, it would be FABulous if somehow the healing we’ve done could ensure that the people we feel drawn to and the people who seem drawn to us are NOT the ones who’ll recreate the dysfunctional patterns and pain we’re so familiar with. Seriously, sign me up. Who *wouldn’t* want the relief of no longer struggling to tell if someone or some relationship is in our best interest, and just trusting that whoever’s showing up in our lives is good and meant for us! The truth though is that no matter how much we heal, we’re still walking around in a world with the same mix and mess of humans, some who’re healing and safe for us to be connected with and PLENTY who aren’t. Sure, we could argue that our energy/vibe/frequency/whatever we emanate to the world changes as we heal (more regulated physiology absoLUTEly changes how we’re perceived by others, consciously and unconsciously!) but healing our trauma doesn’t magically make us a magnet that pulls the “right” people toward us and repels the “wrong” ones away. Our relational healing from complex and developmental trauma is much more active than the fantasy we’re sold. I’d love you to entertain the possibility that encountering people who aren’t ultimately healthy or available for you becomes less of a problem as you heal NOT because you’ll be immune to them, but because you’ll be better able to 1) discern that they’re not healthy or available, and 2) choose not to pursue or be pulled into deeper connection with them (though it won’t automatically be easy to do either). We’ll also be able to discern and choose to move toward people who ARE in good and healthy matches for where we are in our journey. And the more we get practice with all of this, the more we’ll grow to trust ourselves and our judgment too 💛
