After entering Rocky Mountains NP from Grand Lake Entrance Station, we headed north on Trail Ridge Rd in Kawuneeche Valley along a creek. This creek is just the start of Colorado River. River Otter 🦦🌞 Today is my birthday, and while this piece originally had nothing to do with turning 32, I decided to look up the symbolism of otters. Turns out that otters mean a lot of things. Most notably, they symbolize playfulness, creativity and transformation. They symbolize an inner child at play, while embracing new things and forgetting the past. Having a birthday so close to a new year is a little like that - celebrating and being playful and hitting the reset button. Now that Im in my 30s, I don’t tense up at the thought of getting older. “Trail Boss” — I stepped out of my truck high in Rocky Mountains National Park early one morning back in late October to the sound of an elk bugling. I looked around and saw two cows walking down this ridge on the mountain just across the road. My first thought was “Man, that would be cool if a bull was behind those cows.” Right on cue, this bad boy stepped onto the ridge and followed his honeys down the ridge. I grabbed my Nikon 300mm f/2.8 and figured I would see what I could get. It was a real challenge because, although I was shooting toward the eastern horizon, it was an hour before sunrise. However, the sky already was starting to glow. The big issue was the lack of light, so I just cranked up my ISO and opened up the aperture to f/2.8 so I could maintain a 1/1600 shutter speed, and hand held a few shots before the elk wandered off the ridge. Honestly didn’t know if the shot would work because of the poor lighting — but using a professional de-noising program cleaned it up nicely. And there was plenty of light to create that beautiful silhouette. Just over a month ago I was standing with buddies James Eastham andTim Stanley Photography at this overlook deep in Rocky Mountains National Park, waiting on the sun to rise and light up the this mountain. Elk were bugling in the valley below. We watched a big bull trail a couple of cows down a ridge as we geared up in the early morning darkness. It was cold. But I was snug in my thick hunting gear pulled out of my closet specifically for this reason. It was a nice, crisp morning high in the Rockies. All we needed was the sun to do its job. Sunrise came and went, and finally the first rays struck the face of Terra Tomah Mountain as the clouds above simmered with beautiful pastel colors. You wouldn’t believe it after a visit to Rocky Mountain today, but the elk you see scattered around Estes Park were locally extinct around 1900. Only an approximate 40,000 existed in all of North America due to unregulated hunting. Elk are simultaneously a conservation success story in their amazing recovery, and a terrible miscalculation in ecosystem functioning from their massive overpopulation in areas. Without predators, their population has jumped to around 3,200 individuals in Rocky Mountain National Park alone. Finding the right balance is tough for everything we do as humans.
