The Well of Spa, at the corner of Skene Street & Spa Street, was gifted to the citizens of Aberdeen in 1635 by local artist George Jamesone, who is said to have drunk the waters regularly. A great day with Bilal from Sheffield exploring the lost valley. The original plan was to head up and across Aonoch Eagach but Bilal wanted some excellent photographs of the ridge and rightly so. The clag was low this morning as forecast but damper than expected, certainly within the bidean massive., so we decided to give Aonoch Eagach a miss today. Chatting about the Glencoe massacre and the highland clearances, as we meandered along the Wet rock and busy paths. An hour or so later, we emerged into the Valley itself. Lots of stacked stones that are now no longer 😀. Bilal was now able to put the story into picture as we wandered around the plain. We even found a bit of dry rock for a short bouldering solution. Looking forward to an improved forecast when Bilal heads up north again soon. Some nights, you just get your breath taken away by the magic of Mother Nature. The ingredients- a simple sky, a mountain summit, a lone bird and a fabulous splash of colour - this sunset didn't start with too much promise, but soon after I'd almost put the camera away for the night, a furnace like blast of colour reflected on the caravan and I headed back out to see what was happening and the sky really was on fire. Despite the windy weather, I'm still seeing lots of bumblebees on my local patch and that never fails to make me smile. I captured this common carder bumblebee on a dry and breezy day back in August and I love the colour and detail in this image. In this sheltered spot next to the reservoir there were plenty of bees and butterflies to point my lens at. Although I don’t shoot using a macro lens, I always enjoy capturing images of invertebrates. Using my long lens (100-400mm) on the OM1 enables me to stand a distance away to capture these images, so I avoid disturbing any diminutive subjects. Although this setup doesn’t provide the detail and magnification of a macro lens, it makes it easier to take advantage of invertebrate photography opportunities. It also allows me to switch to photographing a passing bird without needing to change lenses. The common carder bumblebee is a social insect. The queen starts the colony when she comes out of hibernation in the spring. She begins by laying a few eggs that will become workers that will look after the young and maintain the nest. Common carder nests can contain up to 200 workers! Males emerge later and will mate with new females that are potential queens. The cycle finishes in the autumn when the new queens go into hibernation in preparation for starting their own colonies in the spring, while the males and old queen die.
