Share your favorite tools for stimulation 👇 If you have ADHD, your 🧠 is constantly searching for ways to get stimulation or dopamine, especially while doing tasks your 🧠 doesn't enjoy doing. Anything that is rewarding, enjoyable, or a provides a sensory experience can be stimulating. Many of my clients find when they are bored or need something to do with their hands or mouth. Food can often be an option because it's easily accessible for most people. Eating for stimulation can lead to overeating or bingeing when it your only tool for stimulation or when you're too distracted while eating to stimm (like watching📺 or studying). Is it okay to eat for stimulation? It is 100% OKAY to use food for stimulation! For some of my clients diagnosed later in life, food was often used as a way to self medicate or get dopamine without them evening knowing it! If you find that eating to stimm while doing other tasks leads to overeating or bingeing, get curious and explore other things to do with your hands or mouth. 5 ADHD Concentration hacks that help me as an audhder✨ 1. Set a timer when completing tasks: I’ve found having the motivation of a timer helps me get things done cause it makes the task feel like a race which makes it more interesting! 🧡 2. Body doubling: having someone do something similar whilst I’m doing things or doing the task together tends to increase my productivity 🌈 3. Listen to something for stimulation: I love having something on as background noise like audiobooks, music or podcasts as it gives my brain that extra stimulation and dopamine and makes tasks feel that little bit less boring. Bonus points for putting your phone out of arms reach whilst listening to avoid distractions! 🎶 4. Break tasks down into small chunks: If a task feels too overwhelming and I don’t know where to start that tends to make things worse so I use support and make a plan with mum so the things I need to do are in small chunks ⭐️ 5. Take movement breaks and use fidgets: when doing something boring that requires me to sit still I’ll take movement breaks to stim and get some of my pent up energy out. I got myself a couple of Tangles by @tanglecreations. 🐶🦥 I've heard good things about them. A neurodivergent friend of mine has one and likes it a lot, so I decided to give them a try. It’s okay to USE and NEED sensory aids, it’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of 🍄 For me, using sensory aids the past decade have helped me to stim as much as I need, focusing with tasks, during autistic meltdowns, to regulate with both autism and ADHD & more so the past year helped me with unmasking. Sensory aids can help with communication, cognitive development, improving focus, social skills and interaction, creativity, calming, increasing confidence and reducing anxiety and stress.
