Only a few more days until this little boy is a big 6 year old (😭) but don’t worry! This week he told me he’s decided he won’t be leaving to go to college since he doesn’t need a job because he doesn’t want his own house or wife and kids, he just wants to live with me forever because I’m his “cutest true love” 🤣🥲 I will 100% be writing this down and reminding him of it in 10 years 😂 sweetest boy there ever was! It’s been such a special year watching him grow! I know it’ll just keep getting better but, best yet! 💙

This photo in the background is an example of this! . I love to mark up my Bible! Write notes, highlight keywords, mine the Word for the precious gold of wisdom! . We were in church service & my oldest son asked me if I could find the passage for him. I found it & then he asked for a marker. I gave him one & watched what he did. He started to highlight the keywords he knew in the passage: Jesus, God & But (some of the best words in the Bible 👏🏼). I finally witnessed in this moment that my kids are always watching & witnessing our habits & practices. I knew that my influence was important but here I understood the impact! . This was an encouragement to my heart to continue & to be mindful. To not neglect my role as a spiritual influence in their little lives. & Lord willing, these simple habits they see in my life as their mother will turn into habits they use in their own walk with the Lord & share with their children. . I haven’t been posting much as we still adjust to being a family of 6, and the hours for painting and drawing seem few and far between (along with the energy to do so). But I have been squeezing in a little time here and there to experiment with new materials that we’re using in our homeschooling! Thanks to the brilliant tutorials from @thelittleartistsroom, we’ve been having incredible fun printmaking with Gelli plates! Very Henri Matisse -esk as we explore shape and color. It’s been the perfect amount of creativity that we can handle right now, and is definitely getting me to consider ways of eventually integrating the Gelli printing process into my work in a more official way (even if that day comes next year 😆🙈)! Some yummy things we’ve made lately 👌🏼 . I remember when I first started staying home after having our firstborn son, I wanted to make homemade meals regularly, since I was going to be home full-time & didn’t have an excuse to not do so. My career was the home & I wanted to be busy in our home. . I was so intimidated & thought I could never make anything that would taste as good as a store bought item! I thought this was too complicated or too much effort to be worth it! . But as I tried & failed & practiced & failed some more & succeeded, I grew in my confidence & ability to make delicious & wonderful things for my family! I realized that most things are not that hard to make & I can actually make food that is much more yummy than whatever you can buy at a store! . I still wouldn’t say I have “arrived” as a cook or baker or homemaker, but I am always improving & celebrating my victories, even when they are small! I see this experience as a blessing to myself, my family & our future generations. . So I am here to encourage you, friend! If I can do it, you can totally do it too!! Make the bread, try a new recipe, break out of your comfort zone! Fail, improve & then win!! I believe in you 👏🏼 . When I had one kid or maybe it was two I’m sitting in the car in a Walmart parking lot and my husband runs in to get milk always milk while I stay with the kids and from the car I see a mom with many children one big one medium one small and maybe even a baby So that’s one two three four and all the doors are opened closed opened closed and after all the groceries are plopped in the trunk the mom pulls out the ice cream box while they hold out their hands expectantly and she drops one two three in their hands before taking one for herself and nurses the baby and I loved that she ripped open the ice cream box in the parking lot instead of under the light of a freezer and now I get why she didn't wait because she survived a grocery trip with four children and that calls for a celebration. And after we survived a grocery trip today my thirteen year old brings the ice cream box to the front of the car rips it open hands us all a thumb sized mini cone without saying a word. // by @exhale.creativity member @ReemFaruqi

In the kids devotional book I read this evening, these 2 verses came up & it spoke right to my troubled & weary heart! It was exactly the comfort & rebuke I needed! . The reminder to Be Still & know that God is in control & there is no need to fear or worry. Whatever chaos or troubles are happening in our present circumstances, God is in control of it all! 🙌🏼 He is working, He is able, He is faithful, He is God! What a comfort!! . & then being rebuked to forgive just as Christ has forgiven you. Even when my flesh feels justified not to. Even when I have been wronged & done nothing to deserve the treatment. Even when you are the innocent. Whatever you end that sentence, “even when…” with, you are called, dear beloved Christian, to forgive. Why? Because Christ has forgiven you! Christ has shown you kindness & mercy EVEN WHEN you didn’t deserve it & were guilty! Christ was tenderhearted towards you EVEN WHEN you were an enemy of God! We are commanded to forgive because of the great forgiveness we have been given! . /disclaimer: that doesn’t mean we forget & there is complete reconciliation & all things are brushed under the rug & we move on completely without consequence… but we forgive to give ourselves peace, to show grace as we have been shown & to obey God.\ . I don’t share our homeschooling too much on this account, but today’s art lesson was good! We started our third term of the year this week, Theophany Term, and even though I’ve been teaching art to all the kids in our Co-Op since the beginning of the school year, I’m only just now starting art lessons at home. It’s funny, we’ve done studio life together for 6+ years but for some reason I’ve been slower and more hesitant to officially teach art to my own kids within our homeschooling — I think because I’ve always felt a little fearful of controlling their creativity in a way I don’t with other people’s kids 🤷♀️ Like a doctor who doesn’t operate on their own family members — it’s just a little too close to home. Regardless, I’m getting over myself this term because I found the most brilliant teacher with @thelittleartistsroom, whose sketchbook prompts I’m in-love with! The last slide shows an example from their account - check them out! I’ve also joined the #littleartistsroom membership and the projects are amazing! And day one went brilliantly! We talked all about different lines, took our lines “on a walk” around the page and discussed the 3 families of line (straight, curved and angled). LIFE SKILLS!!! This week I took time out of our usual school routine to teach a life skill that was past due. My little two are learning to fold their own clothes. I have been having them put away their clothes after I fold them but the new chore will be FOLD AND PUT AWAY. They did it excitedly. I don’t expect that to last forever, but it gave them a moment to feel like they were getting to be “big kids”, which they are. Also, are they moving slowly and does it take them longer than it would take me to do myself? Abso-freaking-lutely. However, it may take them longer to do it than I would do it, but now *I* don’t have to do it. It may take them 20 minutes versus my 10, but that’s 10 minutes I can spend elsewhere and 20 minutes they’re occupied with a good busyness. Do you ever find yourself thinking about your kids and all the ways you love them, and then you feel your eyes weld up with tears because you are just so incredibly grateful you get to have these little loves in your life forever? You get to be with them and witness their personalities come to flourish, you get to watch them grow, make mistakes and get back up from them, see the tender pieces of their hearts, watch their interests bloom, and observe your own heart in the process. I’ve learned that true love really is unconditional. I didn’t know my heart could expand all the ways that it does, but here we are! Here I am in the trenches of parenthood with tears coming down my face because I am so full of gratitude that I get to be here with them. There are ugly pieces to love and to parenting, of course. To see all these beautiful things about my kids requires that I see the not so lovely pieces as well. I cannot believe that we are quickly approaching the halfway mark in our homeschool year!! This year has had its challenges (hello first trimester) but has been such a fun school year so far for both of these boys! Ollie is in 1st grade and Theo is in Kindergarten so they are both at a very fun age in the learning to read department. With my first 2 kiddos this was my biggest challenge in all of our homeschool but after switching to @thegoodandbeautiful Language Arts it is a completely different ball game! Theo is my 3rd little one to use their Kindergarten curriculum and he has absolutely blown me away with how quickly he has not only learned to read, but built his confidence while reading! We love their new Booster books and they are one of our favorite parts to our homeschool day! Theo and Ollie have been having a reading contest since the beginning of school and both of them are almost to the 50 BOOK mark!!!! Absolutely unbelievable for a mama that used to struggle to get her first graders to finish one book a week. Amen.” [Jude 24-25] . The Lord has brought our family through some deep & painful trials these past few years. We’ve grieved loss, suffered hardship & been tossed aside. We were rejected, alienated & trampled. In the these last few years, we have suffered silently, unable to share & unwilling to be vulnerable with people. We often have cried out to God, “How long, O Lord?” . But God, being rich in mercy, abounding in steadfast love & consistently faithful to our family, He has carried us through! He has been our rock & present comfort! He has been our light we have followed in this dark tunnel, of which it feels we are are at the end of! He has been good! SO SO GOOD!! . My husband has accepted a full-time pastoral position at a church & our family is closing this chapter of our lives & moving to another city! We are beyond thankful for the support we have felt from many friends & this new church family! The Lord is at hand & He has worked all things together for good & His glory 🙌🏼 He has kept us! ✨More in the caption✨ . 1️⃣ Children want to be included! When you make a habit of involving them, the long term benefits out way the short term struggles. For example, my kids always want to participate with me during my online weekly Bible study. I resisted it for awhile & would close the door in my room while my husband took care of the kiddos. Now, I give them their own books & markers & let them listen & participate with me. + the other ladies love their involvement! + my kids get to hear truth & see habits of studying the Bible. It’s a blessing to me as well as my children! . 2️⃣ Too many times I have heard of families missing out on church services, prayer meetings, bible studies & so on because of their children. Some even miss out for years! I understand sleep is crucial & every kid has differing needs! Each season has its own challenges. But these are important practices of being a Christian & when we miss out on them, we miss the blessings that can come + it shows our children what we value (Sleep over worshipping with church family, easy bedtime routine over fellowship with believers & so on). + we miss the opportunity to teach & disciple our children as they are participating alongside us. I know it’s hard in the little years. But the children will learn & grow & I promise, it gets easier!! . 3️⃣ Your children are capable little humans! They want & need responsibility! They want to take ownership of their lives & make autonomous decisions! Giving them the opportunity will produce amazing fruit like productivity, confidence & routine. It won’t all happen in a day! But the habits of giving responsibility & allowing them to make decisions for themselves will get easier as they get older. It’s the habits in the little years that produce a foundation for the older years! . 4️⃣ As Dr. @voddieb says, “that’s a viper in a diaper!” Children are trying to navigate their sin nature & their fleshly desires as much as we are! As parents, we need to show mercy & compassion to them, just as we have been shown in Christ! Remember: it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). . Last week's family charcuterie dinner was such a hit that I've decided to put charcuterie style dinners in the weekly rotation. 👏🏻 👏🏻 🍽️ Since the start of the school year we've been focusing on having more family dinners, table manners, and expanding our children's palates. 🙃 Dinner time is well...stressful with a baby that is basically done with the day at 5. 🫠 And truth be told my husband and I love to feed the kids and wait til everyone is asleep so we can enjoy our meals in peace...with no one touching us. ✌🏻😬 (Every night is date night right?! 😁) BUT obviously this isn't sustainable as the kids get older and we want to encourage that round the table family culture. Our goal to transition has been 4 meals a week (because mental health 😂) we are all eating together, trying new foods, reviewing table manners, and throwing out fun "conversation starters." It's actually been super sweet. ✨ 🕯️One thing we've been doing is lighting a "dinner candle." No one is allowed to leave the table until the candle has been blown out and they've been excused. And whoever behaves the best gets to blow the candle out. 😜 But after the first couple nights we just started alternating who gets to blow it out as they're getting the hang of what dinner time is supposed to look like. 😁 We're always together in the evenings but sit down dinners have always been a hard one for us to nail down over the years between early bedtimes and long periods of illness. 🫠 I'm excited for this new phase of having a foot in "big kid camp" AND "baby land."
