After watching Live to 100 on Netflix I was very interested in the health benefits of the purple sweet potatoes from the Okinawa episode, and found a variation at Whole Foods. In Divya Alter’s cookbook, she has a sweet potato smoothie recipe, which I decided to make with the purple variety- it was delicious! Her recipe calls for: 1 C peeled and diced sweet potatoes 1/2 t Divya’s sweet masala mix 6 saffron strands 1-2 pitted and chopped Medjool dates 1 C almond milk (I used whole) 1/2 t vanilla extract I boiled the sweet potatoes, masala mix, saffron, and dates in 1/2C water and simmered for 10 min. I bought Divya Alter’s cookbook, ‘what to eat for how you feel’ a few years ago. I used it a bunch until I got pregnant and my tastebuds changed and I couldn’t stomach much flavor. Now that I’m back, I’m eager to try out so many of these recipes (and the recipes I used to enjoy!). Yesterday I made the stuffed avocados with fresh cheese, and I loved them so much I made them again today! Per Divya, they’re full of healthy fats, protein, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Do you struggle to eat breakfast? Is it because you are not hungry? Dislike breakfast food? Or your just not sure what to eat? I must admit I do like to eat breakfast but I do have bad days where I am not hungry to eat or just do not want a traditional breakfast. To prevent burnout I like to rotate what I eat but try to still aim for protein, fat and fiber at breakfast to keep my IBS in check and prevent any flair ups to ruin my morning. My go to - Protein is alway greek yogurt with a protein content at least 14 grams. - Almond butter (or any butter) for extra protein and fat. I just stick to almond butter due to preference in taste. I add in about 1/2 tbsp. - Fiber: I try to aim for more soluble fibers to help with my IBS. My go to is oat bran and pumpkin seed. Bonus eat have extra protein and pumpkin seed have some fats as well. I also like to add in my first fruit of the day (I must be honest I am quite lazy and forgetful to eat fruit but am working on adding in.) Today I am having a golden kiwi. 🥛🍌 Let's talk smoothies In ayurvedic nutrition, smoothies as we know them (raw fruit/veg with milk, etc.) are considered difficult to digest. This is because they are raw and contain incompatible foods. Raw foods are cold, dry, and rough. They require a very strong agni (digestive fire) to break down and assimilate. While incompatible foods often digest at differing speeds. This means the foods that digest quicker begin to ferment in the stomach. While the heavier foods are still digesting. As a result, the foods can not be digested adequately. This inadequate digestion produces ama (toxins), and we suffer as a result. Spice-Me-Up Leafy Greens Soup Serves 2-4 ⏰ 20mins Wait! Just hear me out 😄 There’s as much taste in this bowl of green goodness as there are nutrients. I, too, was a little skeptical at first - but it’s all about the spice here. This soup is an excellent example of how a pinch of spices can totally transform a dish, so if you are not using a lot of spice in your cooking, here’s a perfect chance to give them a try. You can start by using just a couple - see how that goes and whether you like that particular flavor combo. #whenyourkitchenisyourplayground Adapted from #whattoeatforhowyoufeel by @divyaalter 1 pack kale, stemmed and torn 1 pack of spinach 2 bok choy Curry leaves from 1 sprig 1/2 tsp each cumin, coriander and fennel seeds 1/3 tsp fenugreek seeds 1/4 tsp ground turmeric 1/2 tsp of salt A small piece of fresh ginger (optional) 1/3 tsp nigella seeds (optional) 3 tbsp fresh parsley leaves, divided Fresh lime juice and grated parmesan to garnish 1 tbsp olive oil Thoroughly wash the leaves. Heat the oil to medium-low in a deep pot or sauce pan. Add the seeds (fennel, cumin, coriander and fenugreek, nigella if using) and toast for 10-15 seconds just until the aroma is released. Add the curry leaves and ginger (if using) and stir. Add the turmeric, 2 tbsp fresh parsley and fold in the leafy greens, little by little as they wilt. Pour in 3 cups of boiling water, add salt and simmer for 3-5 minutes. OKRA + BITTER MELON FRIES| another must try delicious veggie combo for late summer in the Northern California Bay Area. . . Here in Berkeley, California you can find okra and bitter melon pretty much year round in Indian grocery stores like @vikschaat and our infamous @berkeleybowl market…but they are often shipped in from somewhere else… . . There’s nothing like in season veggies!! Right now we have #okraseason and fresh #bittermelon available at the #berkeleyfarmersmarket @ecology.center . And when they’re fresh + local they’re sooo delicious! . . This recipe is another iteration of the bitter melon + taro fries in #whattoeatforhowyoufeel from Ayurvedic Chef @divyaalter (thank you Divya 🙏🏽) . . In this version I’m using Okra -a seasonal delight -IF your know how to cook it properly. And the very simple method of roasting whole okra on a high temp works beautifully as it dries out the okra a bit so you don’t get that slimy situation that can easily turn people off to this delicious vegetable! . . Ingredients . -2 Indian Bitter Melon (you can use any variety of bitter melon available to you) -Whole Okra (as much as you wish to cook) -Olive oil (or melted ghee) -enough to lightly coat your veggies -Your favorite masala spice blends (here I’m using ground coriander, ground cumin and the Madras Curry spice blend -all fresh from @oaktownspice -Soma salt (or sea salt) to taste . . Procedure . Preheat oven to 400F. Line baking tray w parchment. . Deseed the bitter melon and slice into half-rounds or full rounds. . Toss whole okra + bitter melon slices in whatever spices you wish, along with a high quality olive oil (I’m using @amphoranueva of course) (you could also use melted ghee or coconut oil) and salt to taste. . Spread evenly onto parchment lines baking tray + roast on 400F for 20-25 minutes. Soothing kitchari with squash made with no effort at all in 20 minutes thanks to @divyaalter and her new line of good for you packaged products at @divyas.nyc Divya is a master Ayurvedic chef who’s cookbook #whattoeatforhowyoufeel is a source for healthy balanced living through food in my kitchen. She is also a soul sister who graciously blessed me with a care package to try all of her new offerings. Each kitchari and soup is absolute perfection and so tasty! I’ve been marveling at how it’s even possible to boil two cups of water and 20 minutes later get something this healthy and good. You can eat them on their own or I like to add veggies like Mexican or yellow squash and zucchini for the last 8 minutes of cooking. They are perfect for when I am starving, slammed with work or home on my own. I’ve joked that they can become addicting because they save so much time and effort. @yogicameron and I have been sharing them with clients and students who are loving them just the same. It’s been a game changer for college students who have no time and sometimes no skills to cook their own meals. I love cooking. But food can be quite tricky because of my health issues. I can’t eat gluten, dairy, high-carb fruit or veg and sugar. But I chose not to feel negatively about food. I don’t think about all the things I can’t eat. Because there’s a vast array of delicious food that I CAN eat. I’ve chosen to change the way I see food. I’ve changed how I interact with it. It’s been challenging but appreciation and positivity are always better than dwelling on the negative. After all, I’d feel lousy if I ate all those things 👆 so I make a choice - quality of life or the fleeting enjoyment of cake? When it comes to cooking, my husband does most of it. But when I get into the kitchen I love a stir fry with baked salmon, prawns and rice noodles. I’ve started reducing my meat intake and eating more fish, which is incredibly delicious. Wow. I have to say that I’m impressed with myself! I’ve been eating for the past week and half ~ for the most part (90%) to fix a pretty serious doshic imbalance in my system. This is according to Ayurvedic medicine, and I’ve been working with a professional. @danaemmings . Please look into it if you aren’t familiar, and I highly recommend Dana. 🌟 I have to say, even though it’s still early, I am experiencing less anxiety, breakouts, irritability and fogginess during the PMS phase of my moon cycle. Im also experiencing more sustained energy in general, and a grounded clarity that seems almost too good to be true. I’ve had to stop intermittent fasting, which I’ve been doing the better part of 4 years, and I’m learning new recipes which feels amazing! I wanted to share in my excitement, and cooking with all kinds of herbs, and care has been bringing me much satisfaction. My daughter has had a spring cold and wheezy dry cough. For the longest time she had wanted a drink in a pineapple, so we made a pineapple smoothy based on @divyaalter ’s recipe. Pineapples generally increase mucus but the dryness of the cough warranted some lubrication. The Amish community has traditionally used a remedy containing pineapple juice to treat coughs and researchers in India have found that a mixture of pineapple juice, salt, pepper, and honey can help dissolve mucus in the lungs of people with tuberculosis. Full of digestive enzymes, Pineapple juice contains bromelain, an enzyme with anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties. Bromelain may help relieve symptoms of asthma and other respiratory problems, as well as break down mucus. So we added , soaked almonds - I switched fresh ginger for dry to help dry up the congestion, black pepper which helps subdue excess mucus and increases digestive fire. I switched maple syrup with honey for it's heating and scraping effects and we added a red / orange umbrella for Sunday and because every drink in a pineapple needs an umbrella! Breaking my nine day fast with a mung soup (with extra water), ghee, turmeric, cumin, ginger and a few curry leaves. It is a recipe from @divyaalter cookbook #whattoeatforhowyoufeel which is my go to for healing Ayurvedic cooking (no garlic, onions or night shades). I was overcome with a feeling of intense gratitude during my practice this morning that continues to reverberate in my heart. It’s like my perception itself has been purified and I’m seeing beauty and blessings in everyone and everything in my life to the point of tears. IRRESISTIBLE BUCKWHEAT CAKE| are you a #buckwheat lover? If not, this cake might turn you into one. . . Another yummy recipe from @divyaalter’s cookbook #whattoeatforhowyoufeel -I highly recommend. Sweetened with dates, apples and some #sucanat which is the least refined of all the #sugarcane based sugars available. . . The cake is vegan, gluten-free and uses whole food ingredients to make a yummy treat that is also quite healthy. The buckwheat flour creates a moist, delicious crumb with deep flavor and good body when combined with the other ingredients. . . I used high quality olive oil ( from @amphoranueva ) in place of coconut oil and added apples and hazelnuts as tasty toppings.
