Reading other authors who write in your genre can make you a better writer. For example, Ana McCracken, founder of the Ames Writers Collective read and re-read Dani Shapiro's memoirs to inform her thesis memoir which Ana completed last fall. "Dani's memoirs are a master’s program in writing,” says Ana. “I’ve dog-eared pages of Dani’s memoirs marking margins that are full of notes.” Ana has found that Dani’s memoirs speak to the universal. “By that I mean,” says Ana, “your writing must connect with the reader. You want your reader to arrive at 'ah ha' moments in the same moment that you do. You want your reader to think, 'Wow, I can see myself in her story.' Whenever I am writing, I think, what would Dani do? The next time you're reading or re-reading a book, think about why you've been drawn to it. What does the author do well? What's something that you can incorporate into your own writing? SEEKING BETA READERS anyone? Today, our goal is to connect indie writers with beta readers. When it comes to beta readers, we all seem to be looking for different things and at different times. You could be at the early stages of your WIP and merely looking for some general feedback on overall impressions of the story, or you could be close to having your story polished and need more from your beta readers such as looking for typos, timeline inconsistencies or character inconsistencies, etc. Whatever it is that you need, it’s good to be clear with your beta readers, not only so they understand what you need, but also to ensure you’ve found someone fit for the task. Comment below if you’re an author currently seeking beta readers with the title and genre(s) of your WIP, or tag anyone that you know of looking! If you enjoy and are available to beta read, see comments below to find a genre you enjoy. What are your tips and tricks when it comes to beta readers? But this strong desire to create a page, a community of support, connections and the sharing of useful information for indie authors was at the forefront of our minds. This page has created editing connections, cover design connections, indie book swaps and some thought-provoking conversations about the indie writer life. “I live in Maryland with my boyfriend and our two cats, Ahri and Loki. I first started writing at the age of 12. I shared my stories on sites like Inkpop and Wattpad --and this is where my novel, Cursed With Power, really took off. Cursed With Power was picked up by Old Line Publishing shortly after I graduated high school. Unfortunately, Old Line Publishing is no longer in business --but I've since self published CWP. In 2013 I took the dive into self publishing with my book Shadows and Embers. Ever since then I've been self publishing, and I've managed to release at least one book each year. Having been both traditionally and self published, I have to say I love all the freedom and control that comes with being an indie author. It's definitely the more challenging path to take, but I wouldn't change it for the world. To date, I have 7 books published --and these books are split up into two different series. The Magicians series: Cursed With Power, Shadows and Embers, Thicker Than Blood, Bloodline Inheritance... And my current series, A Rose With Thorns: Clara and Clarie, Clara and Ezra, and my latest release Clara and Daphne. I started out solely writing fantasy books --hence my first series was fantasy focused. But over the years I've dared to jump into the mystery genre, and my current series actually combines mystery and fantasy. In my free time I read a variety of genres, but my favorites are fantasy, mystery and romance. I dont know much about architecture. So, I often find myself deconstructing the psychology of the men behind it. I’ve come to view most tombs as ironies erected in brick and mortar. The grander the mausoleum the bigger the ironical value set into its stone. To me it seems to say : Here lies the body of a man who lived a life drunk on his own power. So naively blinded by the glare of his wealth and victories that he lived exiled from the truth that men are created equal. Whenever in history “great” men chose to be buried under the finest sandstone, marble and gold as symbols of their worldly conquests.The same tombs ironically also symbolise their failure to conquer their own ego. In death there are no kings or peasants, there is no better or worse, bones are just bones. They turn to dust, no matter what. Hello to all, it's been a while hasn't it? We've been talking a lot about how things are going during this scary time, what we can do to help, and how to even approach this pandemic. After several long video calls, many facebook messages, and a handful of emails a plan fell into place. On November 18th of 2019, we announced the Soft Shake Volume 1 Compilation would feature DIY recorded songs from bands we loved. We started promoting, we recieved tracks, we were ecstatic. We were finally doing something for the folks who do a lot of others! However...the pandemic has caused delays in work, and changes in our original plans for the release, but it has also changed how we want to release the compilation. All of the artists featured are unable to play shows at this moment in time, and for the unforeseeable future. For artists, this is not only hindering their passion but causes the loss of revenue to allow them to continue following their passion. We want to help in anyway possible. The Compilation is set to release within the first week of may as a digital only release. Listeners will be able to stream it on major streaming platforms as well as available to purchase digitally on BandCamp, where all profits will go to the bands participated. But we are also going to include the Venmo/PayPal for the bands as well, if anyone would like to donate to them personally.
