Throwback to Kenya - Part 3/3. One of the main reasons why @nad_.s._tyle and I are coming back to Kenya now: In October 2022 we visited @localoceanco - a conservancy working hard to help sea turtle populations grow through various activities. While we were there, they prepared Mad Max, a juvenile green sea turtle, to be released back into the ocean after it had been treated in their facility. We not only got the chance to witness this, but I was even asked if I wanted to help carry it back to the ocean. Unforgettable. After this trip, an idea arose and grew to go back and volunteer with them. So, after 1.5 years of planning, preparing, and saving up, it's only a week until this becomes reality. Known for their elongated snouts and unique appearance, tapirs are essential for maintaining the balance of ecosystems. As "gardeners of the jungle," they help disperse seeds through their droppings, thus contributing to forest regeneration. However, tapirs face numerous threats, including habitat loss due to deforestation, poaching, and conflicts with humans. Despite the constant dangers of tractor-trailers due to the construction of the Mayan train, the need to cool off in the "aguadas" has put the safety of this typical species at a critical point. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy has named Amanda Hofmann-Hardy, who most recently led the Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, as its new chief executive officer. El día de ayer, un vecino menonita nos llamó porque el águila se había estrellado en una ventana de su casa y la pobre quedó herida y no puede volar, así que la recogimos y la trajimos a casa para estarla cuidando y alimentando en lo que se recupera y pueda volar de nuevo. Cuando esté lista, la idea es llevarla a algún sitio del rancho donde pueda estar en un lugar fuera del alcance de depredadores y liberarla para que vaya adaptándose de nueva cuenta a la vida silvestre. Great Camp Santanoni ▪︎ September 2023 Rumor has it the word vacation originated in the Adirondacks. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the ultra-wealthy began building vacation estates up here in the mountains. Eventually known as “Great Camps,” the majority were luxurious playgrounds for the owners. Santanoni, one of the earliest of these camps, however, was different. It was intended to be both a family retreat and a working farm. In the 1890s, Albany-based banker Robert Pruyn and his wife Anna accumulated nearly 13,000 acres surrounding Newcomb Lake in the Adirondacks. The main camp features more than 5,000 square feet of porches facing the lake — along with a Japanese influence rarely seen in the area. (Pruyn spent several years as a young man living in Japan with his father, who was Abraham Lincoln’s minister to Japan, and developed an affinity for Japanese architecture.) With accommodations available for both family and friends, the camp served as a hub for outdoor activities, including swimming, boating, and hiking. The farm allowed Santanoni to be largely self-sustaining for many years, driven by both a desire to expand the field of agriculture and to compensate for the limitations of farming in the Adirondacks, which is notoriously challenging. In addition to produce, the farm had a wide variety of livestock, including pigs, chickens, and dairy cows. The Pruyn family spent time at Santanoni from 1893 through 1953, when it was sold it to a family of Syracuse, who owned it for most of the next 20 years. Santanoni was later purchased by the Adirondack Conservancy Committee and transferred to the State of New York to be added to the State Forest Preserve. It really is a gorgeous place to visit in Newcomb. El dosel de los bosques tropicales es uno de los sitios menos comprendidos y estudiados. La dificultad para acceder a las alturas, la escasa posibilidad de encontrar lo que se desea, entre otros factores limitantes; hacen de estos hábitats, lugares con un enorme potencial científico. Aquí, presento a uno de los innumerables habitantes de las copas de los árboles: La rana Búho (Tepuihyla tuberculosa); en los bosques tropicales amazónicos, es más fácil escucharla que verla, encontrar este ejemplar, además, de haber sido todo un reto; fue una gran emoción y satisfacción. Un animal realmente increíble, precioso y muy bien adaptado a la vida en las alturas. Algo curioso, es que la gente de la localidad piensa que el canto de esta rana, es el de una serpiente (Lachesis muta). Al encontrar esta rana, no solamente pude explicar y desmitificar aquella creencia; sino también, "sembrar" en mis nuevos amigos y equipo la "semilla" de la curiosidad, de la conservación y protección de estos espacios, tan amenazados por la incesante explotación y actividad humana.
