Supported with a 90’s era who’s who of talented outstanding players, with such standouts as; Anthony Hopkins, as Chaplin’s biographer, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, Diane Lane as Paulette Godard, Dan Aykroyd as Max Sennett and Chaplin’s actual daughter Geraldine brilliantly portraying her own mentally ill grandmother. 100 Years ago at movies. Marcus Loew pulls together all the pieces to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios which opens its doors with the hit “He Who Gets Slapped” with Chaney and makes stars of Gilbert and Shearer. Samuel Goldwyn remains an independent producer despite lending his name to Hollywood’s greatest studio of the Golden Years. Loew a legendary figure at the beginning of cinema, never lived to see just how enormous his brainchild would become however a century later his name is still out there attached to the theater chain he formed. CBC film distributors becomes Columbia Pictures but is firmly a small “poverty row” studio and a decade away from slowly becoming one of the majors. Valentino continues to struggle to find a major hit. Out of touch with the taste of the masses he is more famous now than his movies. Eventually described as a masterpiece, Erich Von Stroheim’s ambitious “Greed” is edited down from around 9 hrs, to 4 hrs down to around 2 hrs and lays an egg at the time.
