If you squint, and stand at an angle the pallets of stacked bricks hides the building site mess and the house looks.. sort of normal. Although we’re years off having a garden, adding some plants really made a difference. The wisteria is potted so we can move it once the reclaimed brick wall has been built and it can climb on that. It does a good job at covering some of the ugly cement render in the mean time.
May is the month of the Country House Alphabet. P is for Penrhyn Castle. A personal favourite place of mine as it was where I had my first job in the heritage sector, where I made the choice to go and do a masters in public history and heritage. These pictures show one of Thomas Hoppers' finest creations, the Grand Staircase at Penrhyn Castle. The staircase is fit into the small space that once was the courtyard of the medieval house. The carving formed from both oolitic limestone and grey sandstone. Many of the motifs seen here can be found in the book of Carter's Ancient Architecture. Rather than creating a typical spiral staircase, like most Norman castles, Hopper created this incredible carved creation.
