✨REVIEW✨ The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead (2016) This book felt like a punch in the face: brutal, and quick to get my attention. Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad is the story of Cora, an enslaved woman who escapes the cruelty of an antebellum Georgia plantation, emboldened by a friend with a connection to a literal Underground Railroad system through the US. Every stop on the subterranean railroad gets her closer to freedom, until it doesn’t, and each location seems idyllic, but comes with fresh new horrors. An indictment of the United States and its history of slavery, told almost as a cruel fairytale, with alternating timelines, magical realism, and stark, ugly facts, this novel is exciting, informative, incredibly upsetting, and really scary. If you know enough American history you can start to anticipate what will happen in each location, the dread of which is totally unnerving and uncomfortable. I was fortunate to have read Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys first, so I had some idea of what the author had in store for me, and was able to guard my emotions enough to appreciate the book beyond some of the more devastating aspects of the storyline. My favorite chapter was Mabel, Cora’s mother, whose legendary escape during Cora’s youth follows her throughout the book. That was the most emotional part of the book for me. There is something chilling about Whitehead’s writing and the tough characters he creates. It is terse and extremely effective, but seems to lack emotion for the most part, and then suddenly strikes you out of nowhere with sentiment and poignance. Quietly, but right through the heart, and then only for a moment. I thought this book was excellent, but definitely not for everyone. The fast paced, intense writing gets your heart pumping and the characters are great, but there’s some real(istic) evil to this story, so check the content warnings, and watch out for nightmares. Thanks for reading!✨ -Becca (Swipe for more cats 🐈‍⬛🐈)

It’s time for my haul! Yay! 🥰 As I’ve said before, I never buy brand new books unless it’s for my birthday or Christmas. So getting these when it was neither was a pretty big deal. I’ve never read House of Leaves, The Underground Railroad, or S. I’ve always known that House of Leaves and S. would be best read as physical copies that having now flipped through both of them I’m SO glad I bought them. And you already know there are some other faves here especially Ripe and Wellness! 🥰 . . . . . . . #ripe #wellness #dollypartonsongteller #imgladmymomdied #theundergroundrailroad #conveniencestorewoman #houseofleaves #s #projecthailmary #jjabrams

Aaaaaand it’s time for another #whatthisweek so that I don’t accidentally stop posting for the next few months. 🖋️Reading: I’ve recently started All the Young Men by Ruth Coker Burks, and I cannot put it down. I’ll speak more about it in an upcoming post, but I already know that I’ll be recommending it to a lot of people. I’m also (still) finishing up War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, and am technically reading Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin (but cannot find where I put my copy oops). 📺Watching: I do not have the attention span for shows or movies right now, but I have been binging cooking videos for meals I’ll probably never make. Feel free to drop some of your fave foodie content creators below. 🎶Listening to: Hind’s Hall by Macklemore. ☕️Eating: All I seem to want at the minute is sushi or pizza. I’m not mad about it. 🎮Playing: Potion Permit! If anyone’s played this game, I’d love to chat about it. What are you up to this week? Do we have anything in common right now? PS - scroll for a very cute cat and a very cute dog.

Typically I give a rating for books but I’m choosing not to do that this time. The Water Dancer was special and also perplexing. I don’t want to give a rating partly because I’m still unsure and partly because I think other voices matter more in reviewing a book about slavery and The Underground Railroad. The characters are so interesting and special, but also I couldn’t keep track of all of them, even with a character map. The genre is historical fiction with some fantasy thrown elements. Most Underground Railroad stories I’ve read highlight a main character’s escape and it resolves with the freedom in the north. I like how this story was more about The Underground as a whole. It showed how they worked interconnected between the north and south. The fantasy elements bothered me. In some ways it felt like this “power” of conduction stole the true strength that people like Harriet Tubman had. These people didn’t have magical powers. They had grit. So was it worth the read, yes! Was it long and confusing, also, yes. I’m dying to talk to someone else about it! If you’ve read it. Send me a message! #books #bookstagram #bookreview #read #historicalfiction #fantasy #slavery #theundergroundrailroad

I finally got around to reading Colson Whitehead and decided to start with The Underground Railroad. I rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars. . FULL REVIEW (from my Goodreads): 4.5 out of 5 stars; rounded up to 5 stars on Goodreads. . This was a historical fiction that follows the life of Cora, a Black slave who grew up on the Randall Plantation in the south. The story follows her journey on the plantation and her escape through the Underground Railroad, and the hardship runaway slaves had to deal with to be free. . Overall, I enjoyed the story and learning more about slavery through the lens of a slave. Although it is fictional, it felt as if it was a real account of what could’ve happened. The characters were well developed - some of my favorite characters including Cora, Caesar, Rebel, Sam, Martin, Ethel, and even Mabel, who we don’t see on page. The author took the time to give all the characters a unique voice, including those who were evil (Ridgeway, the Randalls, Homer, etc.). . The author’s prose style was written well and was captivating throughout the entire novel. He is a great storyteller and knows how to use language to convey emotion. . The only reason I bumped down the rating was the ending felt abrupt and left open ended as to what will happen to Cora. The events the transpired before this was so upsetting and I was hoping to end the story there, but I do think it fits right with the setting of the story being parallel to reality. …. … .. . { #colsonwhitehead #colsonwhiteheadtheundergroundrailroad #theundergroundrailroad #undergroundrailroad #historicalfiction #historical #historicalfictionbooks #novel #book #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #bookssavelives #books #bookstagrammer #goodreads #goodreadsreview #goodreadschallenge #breezysbooks #follow #tags}

The Underground Railroad Heritage Center of Niagara Falls By Eric Perry @perryimages2.0 The Underground Railroad is a significant piece of American history that stretches across the United States. It is a story of courage, determination, and hope for those seeking freedom from the horrors of slavery. Today, visitors can experience this powerful history by exploring the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center in Niagara Falls, New York. Formally known as The Cataract Hotel, this museum stands as a symbol of the journey that many slaves took to reach freedom. The museum is located in the spot where slaves would often escape from the South to come to Niagara Falls to visit their owners. From there, they would make their way over the Niagara River to Canada, where they could finally be free. But the journey to freedom was not easy. Slaves would come to Niagara Falls with the hope of finding work and saving enough money to start their own businesses. These brave individuals would then use their resources to help others seek freedom. As you walk through the museum, you can almost feel the heavy yet inspired emotions of those who walked this same path many years ago. One of the most remarkable parts of the museum is that it is also the site of the Cataract Hotel, where the waiters were not only employed as servants, but also served as double agents in the underground railroad. These courageous men would wait tables and help move slaves across the Niagara River at night. About 80% of the waiters at this hotel, such as John Morrison, played a vital role in aiding slaves on their journey to freedom. Seems like my time with backlists is about to come to an end — at least for a little bit — as i pivot my attention towards new releases from this year. For now though, here are some older titles i’d read in the past month or so, with most needing no introduction. 🍑 EAT A PEACH is a foodie memoir by David Chang (written by Gabe Ulla), the founder of Momofuku & other restaurants that followed within the group. Interesting insights into the food/restaurant industry that made me drool with its food descriptions. Some heavier parts throughout too as Chang discusses his mental illnesses and how they play into his life. I don’t always agree with Chang but appreciate his honesty and willingness to share such personal stories. Rec for other foodies, obvi! ◾️ I loved most of the stories in Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s FRIDAY BLACK, especially the first few in the collection. Incisive stories steeped in anti capitalism/consumerism and rage towards racism and hate crimes. Thoroughly well written and will get your blood boiling, after this and Chain Gang All Stars, Adjei-Brenyah is now an author i’ll always follow. 🚂 I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD by Colson Whitehead is a brilliant masterpiece. I know lots of you know this already. While i also appreciated The Nickel Boys, it didn’t quite captivate me as much as TUR did. I think i would’ve find it even more impressive if i read it closer to its publication, but i’m glad i’ve picked it up regardless. If you’re yet to read it, please do soon! 🇸🇬 HOW WE DISAPPEARED by Jing-Jing Lee is a sprawling WWII novel told through the perspectives of Singaporeans affected by the Japanese Occupation in 1940s. Adding a layer to the story is a narrator from the modern-day world Kevin, whose family holds secrets that go back to those post-war years. This title has been on my TBR for a while but perhaps it’s because i’m so familiar with the themes already, i didn’t find it as moving in the end. If you don’t know much about Japanese occupation of SE Asia around the time though, it’s one you should try! Thoughts on any of these??

🚂: My school has started using #TheUndergroundRailroad (320p) in our AmStuds/AmLit H courses and— hearing good reviews from the kids the last few years— I wanted to check it out. 🚂: I can’t say that enslaved persons narratives are my preferred genre; a student of American Studies, history, and race, I felt as though I just hadn’t seen very many (any?) different takes on the experience to pull me into a novel. 🚂: But when I saw in the synopsis of Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book that he’d incorporated elements of sci-fi, alt history, and magical realism I said okaaaaay yes hello I’m interested. 🚂: So this story *did* give me the extra va-va-voom that I needed to get into it: Whitehead’s depiction of Cora is nuanced and thoughtful; his usage of purposefully-jarring language evokes its intended effect; and his weaving in of other like traumatic events from history (Tulsa Race Massacre, Tuskegee experiments, even Anne Frank) is what makes this reluctant hero’s journey so impactful. 🚂: Do I love the use of the n-word? No but it’s a Black author so it’s his prerogative (and my discomfort, like, doesn’t matter). Would I love to see Black authors/voices/characters shown *outside* of enslavement? Sure. BUT, while a period piece, the writing feels fresh and modern with SO. MANY. connections to make that go beyond the novel. 🚂: No wonder our students have been so hyped about it. #bookstagram #gaybookstagram #englishteacher #gayenglishteacher #guyswhoread

. ‘If it is true for you, it is true for someone else and you are no longer alone.’ I would imagine writing anything after the totemic The Underground Railroad would be a hard task but Whitehead proves there was more than enough fire left in the tank to put across this devasting story of identity and innocence (lost). ‘We must believe in our souls that we are somebody.’ MLK Like the aforementioned classic (it’s got that status, right?) The Nickel Boys never shies away from anything less than a no holes barred approach to storytelling. Given the nature and setting of this story be prepared for detail on many of the more unpleasant aspects of life as a Black boy in a hellish reform school in 1960s America. ‘Pain rolled off him like rain from a slate roof.’ What I liked most about this book was the portrayal of Elwood Curtis’ questioning of the things Martin Luther King was saying and asking for during the struggle for Civil Rights. To have the opportunity to see and hear those words from King from the perspective of Curtis was absolutely fascinating. ‘We will wear you down by our capacity to suffer and one day we will win our freedom...we will so appeal to your heart and your conscience that we will win you in the process and our victory will be a double victory.’ MLK One of the many great things about trying to be a reader is to visit places, meet people and hear opinions you otherwise would never be able to in your normal everyday life. To read and journey with Elwood as he assimilates the language of Dr King gave me, with all my privilege, plenty to consider and think about. ‘The world had whispered its rules to him for his whole life and he refused to listen, hearing instead a higher order.’

✨📖Book Review 📖✨ The Underground Railroad By Colson Whitehead ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It wasn’t an actual railroad. But what if it was? Colson Whitehead uses the imagery of a literal underground railroad as a really creative literary device to take the reader through multiple layers of Black oppression throughout the country. The protagonist Cora is born enslaved on a plantation in Georgia. She escapes to South Carolina, where she is yoked with “uplift suasion.” This is where reading Stamped by Reynolds and Kendi was very eye-opening. It was (is) the mentality that newly freed Black people should adopt White customs so that they would fit into the American society. There were many tragic and cruel and inhumane things in the book, but this was the most impactful to me. I think because I have heard those awful stories before but I’m ashamed to say that until now, I haven’t understood the idea of uplift as erasure. This will stay with me. I want to make sure that it stays with me. I won’t spoil any more, but the train takes Cora through other states and other atrocities. Be warned, the things that are described are horrifying and are real. Whitehead has a beautiful way of writing, but this was still very hard to read. Thank you to @litsocietypod for this recommendation and the pairing with Stamped. Both episodes are fantastic. 🚂 “The weak link-she liked the ring of it. To seek the imperfection in the chain that keeps you in bondage. Taken individually, the link was not much. But in concert with its fellows, a mighty iron that subjugated millions despite its weakness. The people she chose, young and old, from the rich part of town or the more modest streets, did not individually persecute Cora. As a community, they were shackles. If she kept at it, chipping away at weak links wherever she found them, it might add up to something.” ⛓️‍💥 🏷️ #bookstagram #bookreview #colsonwhitehead #theundergroundrailroad #areyouareader #bookrecommendations #historicalfiction #readthis #lifechangingbooks

The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead What a novel. This reimagined historical fiction follows young slave Cora in her pursuit of freedom. Whilst it’s a more literal interpretation then the actual network it took its name from, it’s a genius way to illustrate the stakes and sheer magnitude of the real operation. Detached, third person narration perfectly contrasts the harrowing realities of this unforgivable era of history. It’s extremely well written, shining a light on the endless struggle for a life that is free from ownership, oppression and inequality. It doesn’t feel right to say that I loved this book, but it’s such an important read that I really do recommend it if you are yet to check it out. #52bookclub2024 prompt 10 | Told in non-chronological order My review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Enslave their brothers. This nation shouldn't exist, if there is any justice in the world, for its foundations are murder, theft, and cruelty. Yet here we are."

#Repost @penlandschool ・・・ Congratulations to spring Concentration instructor (@jbarberstudio) on the recent publication of his illustrations in a new edition of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad” from @foliosociety. This celebrated novel tells the story of an African American girl named Cora and her escape from slavery using a literal underground railroad. It is a mind-bending tale that is both imaginary and brutally realistic. “I always wanted to be an illustrator,” Jamaal said, “particularly a kid’s book illustrator, which is what really inspired me to start doing art in the first place. And I never thought I’d get the opportunity to be able to do a project like this. This is really my dream coming back to me after so long.” “I wanted to take this challenge because a lot of my work is about blackness,” he said, “and my work also speaks a lot about history and how important it is that we properly contextualize what happened to get us where we are and to know where to go afterwards. So I do feel that it’s a big responsibility to celebrate the story and to tell it properly.” For these illustrations, Jamaal combined his first love, woodcut, with his more recent interests in painting and mixed-media. “The book came right at that point where I’m starting to merge the two things and kind of create this beautiful mashup of the bright, colorful stuff and the original texture of woodcuts.” When, after months of working and then waiting, he finally had a copy of this beautiful book in his hands, Jamaal smiled broadly and said, “Wow!” Then he said, “It takes a lot of work to be an artist, you know, and you don’t get many moments like, ‘I did it.’” See link in bio for more on this project. #penland #theundergroundrailroad #illustrator #printmaker #relief #collage #art #colaonwhitehead #foliosociety

Barry Jenkins: 'I just ran full speed' toward epic 'Underground Railroad' adaption - Pam Grady , March 13th, 2024, 48 Hills Barry Jenkins was four or five years old the first time he heard about the Underground Railroad, the19th-century network that helped escaped slaves make their way to freedom in the years before emancipation. What the little boy saw in his head was an actual railroad, and he imagined men like his grandfather—a Miami longshoreman who left for work every day wearing his hard hat, tool belt, and boots—digging the tunnels and operating the trains. I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other. - Harriet Tubman I am in awe, I am humbled by the life and work of Harriet Tubman. She was born into enslavement in Maryland in March, 1822, the exact date is not known. She would make a daring escape for freedom in 1849. And then do something truly remarkable - she would command some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends. On the Underground Railroad she would develop close ties to other abolitionists like John Brown, he and other supporters of the cause would refer to her with utter reverence as the “General” for her tactical brilliance. Of her work on the Underground Railroad it was said she “never lost a passenger”. She was called the Moses of her people. When the Civil War began she would assist the Union Army first as a cook and a nurse. She cared for countless soldiers suffering from the wounds of battle, and diseases like dysentery, and smallpox - her knowledge of local plants for tinctures and medicines helped many. But it her work as a spy and scout that was truly invaluable. Her work on the “Railroad”, made her incredibly skilled at reconnaissance. She aided Colonel James Montgomery in the capture of Jacksonville, Florida. And was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. Tubman guided the raid on the Combahee River plantations. The raid was a triumph and liberated more than 700 enslaved people. In later life she became involved with the suffragette movement. She tirelessly helped others, in spite of great financial difficulties, she was routinely shamefully denied a pension for her heroic work for the Union Army. On this day in 1913, she passed away in a rest home for elderly African Americans that she helped found. Her last words were - “I go to prepare a place for you.” Harriet Tubman - Liberator March, 1822 - March 10, 1913 #harriettubman #AramintaRoss #liberator #abolitionist #general #fightnaziseverywhere #thesouthlost #theconferderacylost #theundergroundrailroad #civilwar #hero

The powerful thing about Colson Whitehead’s book is how it captures the experience of slavery. You feel the tension and the violence of dehumanizing people. You get a real sense of what it took for someone to try to escape in the face of an overwhelming system of white supremacy. Trying to capture that feeling was a wonderful challenge. . ‘And America, too, is a delusion, the grandest one of all...This nation shouldn’t exist, if there is any justice in the world, for its foundations are murder, theft and cruelty. Yet here we are.’ I am in no way able to even begin to attempt to start a review of this incredible book. ‘The world may be mean, but people don’t have to be, not if they refuse.’ I will, however, say the premise of there being an actual, physical underground railroad is inspired and allows Whitehead to take the reader on the most incredible journey. ‘Stolen bodies working stolen land. It was an engine that did not stop, its hungry boiler fed with blood.’ Written in a very direct style this will shock and surprise you and comes with all the TWs possible. ‘Sometimes a useful delusion is better than a useless truth.’ Despite the brutal events described and horrific treatment explained there is still (somehow) some hope amongst the hate. Just. ‘The only way to know how long you are lost in the darkness is to be saved from it.’ This year I’m trying to read more of what my better half has to regain that shared love of a book we used to have (in a different life, twenty years ago, whilst backpacking). I didn’t realise how much I missed the conversations and common ground the sharing of a book provides. As The National sing, ‘Love their loves’. I’m trying. I did. Great rec @yorkshire.bex ‘She wasn’t surprised when his character revealed itself - if you waited long enough, it always did. Like the dawn.’
