The Bourgeois in Burgos We waited for the strong headwind before we departed. Today 28km to the city of Burgos and a rest day. The first trail half, quite interesting. Small villages. Cropland. Too soon, we were walking alongside roads. On roads. Adjacent to an airport. Even a railway track. And finally, 8km through a tired industrial centre. As we approached the city centre, we were beginning to regret our planned 2 night stop here. Boring Burgos looking bad. But, in the final kilometre, our spirits soared as did the Burgos Cathedral Spires. The old town centre simply delightful. Tree lined river. Bar lined streets. And in the heart, crowds of people enjoying the atmosphere. For the next two nights, we had lashed out and booked a posh hotel literally adjoining the Cathedral. Yet still at a price not much more than an above average Dubbo Motel. Our time here excellent. Pincho bar food. Superb wines. Cold beer. And a buffet breakfast to die for. (Unfortunately only open for 3 hours.) The highlight of our visit was the Burgos Cathedral. The entrance fee for us pilgrims just 5 euros. The same entry fee scale as the unemployed. Now initially I was reluctant to visit the cathedral which is a monstrous edifice in the towns centre. I was expecting a lesser version of the “Ridge Castle” with its famous beer bottle clock tower. (tallest beer bottle clock tower in the world mind you..) Yet I soon realised the cathedrals centuries old stained glass windows were more impressive than a few beer bottles stuck into the rock walls of the Ridge Castle. Ancient classical artworks also rivalled our John Murray emu prints adorning our Castle. The cathedrals architecture quite something to behold. Our necks became sore from staring at magnificent vaulted ceilings. One could even say awe inspiring. Remarkably all this created centuries earlier. A well deserved World Heritage listing. I came away inspired. My spirit was soaring. I had seen what is possible for human endeavours. I plan to dedicate the rest of my life (or at least a weekend) to a new beer bottle wall in the Ridge Castle. Using 3 different coloured of beer bottles in a pattern...Beware Burgos!

She's Venezuelan and lives in New York. I met her for the first time in Leon in 2021, and then we ran into each other last year in Bercianos, and now in Navarrete. I also ran into another pilgrim for the second time in 3 years as I was walking past Logroño. I'm staying in Viana, the first town in Navarra. Camino Day 53 Portomarin - Airexe The rain in Spain falls mainly...today! Sorry not many photo opportunities due to rain. The church of St Nicolas, Portomarin. Relocated to its current position from the valley in the 1960s when the river was flooded to form a reservoir. Built as a fortress and a church. A Galician Horreo, a granary of stone and wood designed to keep food dry and safe from rats and mice. Our first gum trees sighted in Spain, a nice reminder of home in Australia. A huge tortilla to share, energy to walk the last 6km for the day. The rain today set in for a solid 2.5hrs while we walked. Os debo 2dias y mi relato continua... Día 4 Pajares-Pola de Lena 24km Después del subidon de la etapa reina, en todos sus sentidos, y que sigo sin superarlo ni quitármela de la cabeza, una etapa no menos exigente. Un rompepiernas en todas sus fases de subir y bajar, y muuuuucho bajar durante toda la etapa. Mientras vas dejando atrás los paisajes teñidos de blanco, el verde vuelve a imponerse, fuerte, vigoroso. Prados llenos de flores, de barro, de hojas, de caca de vaca... espacio donde las clases de patinaje son gratuitas, porque los resbalones están asegurados por mucha bota buena en agarre y por mucha técnica caminando. Pero nada importa porque el aire frio y puro sienta bien, la mente se despeja, solo quiere sentir todo lo bonito que le rodea, y tú te sientes bien, mejor que bien, con subidote, ensanchando tu alma de la mejor manera. Y para rematarlo, encuentras gente bonita ("gente de camino") que sientan tan bien, que te dan paz y que te dejan ser como tú eres y todo son risas, conversaciones, abrazos, y litros de sidra 🤣🤣🤣 que son los culpables de este pequeño retraso temporal en mi comunicación. #caminodelsalvador #caminodesantiago #theway #lobonitodelcamino #loesencial #gentebonita #senderismo #caminar

Vandredag 16. Hornillos - Castrojeriz / 21,4 km Flot etape 🤗 Både vidder som jeg er vild med, lidt småsti, gennem små byer, San Antons ruin …. Ja skøn etape 💚 Sov længe idag til 6.30, morgenmad, pakke og afsted sent kl. 7.30. Ikke så langt idag og har et sted at sove. Lidt træt i kroppen efter 15 km og ømme fødder, mere end vanligt de sidste 3-4 km. Talte med en anden om det - og vi fandt ud af, at de sidste par dage har vi ikke holdt så mange pauser pga vejret har været køligt. Så sidder man ikke bare og lufter tæer. MEN .. det vil jeg forsøge at komme tilbage til… pauserne med at lufte tæer ! For ret ømme fusser 😝 Desuden har jeg hviledag imorgen - og det blir meget rart 🤗 Vejret meget lunere idag, dog overskyet. Fra i eftermiddag vælter det ned med regn, heldigvis ligger jeg lunt i min seng 😄 Tilgengæld siger de meget varmt slut på ugen op til 27 grader. Vi må se….
