I used to think I had a problem living a double life as musician and backpacker. Then I discovered some of the world’s greatest composers – like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mahler – deliberately went on long ‘composing’ walks to capture the muse. They likely didn’t have a clue why it worked. But science tells us that walking stimulates creativity because of “Impact-related Retrograde.” That’s when backward-flowing waves of blood move through the arteries and sync with the heart-rate and stride-rate to dynamically regulate circulation to the brain. *** Collaborator Spotlight*** In Stories from The Subverse we explore themes we’ve touched upon in The Subverse, and uncover hidden and marginalised stories around nature, science, culture and social justice, but through a more personal storytelling lens. In this series, we aim to create a more immersive audio experience that moves away from the interview format and allows for different and diverse narratives. We've been lucky to collaborate with some truly unique voices since the start of Stories from The Subverse, voices like Siddharth Pandey. Siddharth is a writer, cultural historian, visual practitioner and musician hailing from the Shimla Himalayas. Educated in India and the UK, he holds a PhD in Literary and Material Culture Studies from the University of Cambridge. His first book Fossil was published in 2021, and was a finalist for the 2022 Banff Mountain Literature Awards. In 'Movement, Mountains, Metamorphosis and Music' Siddharth extols the wonders of moving, and allowing oneself to be moved. Siddharth's musical compositions inspired by the mountains are generously intertwined in this narrative. Thrilled to present Mollspeak: a new sound work, written + directed by internationally renowned writer #MariaFusco with original score by Olivier Pasquet + voiced by actor Maxine Peake. Experimental in form, the piece explores and embodies working-class voices of eighteenth century servants in England. The work’s title is taken from a phrase used by employers to denigrate or belittle their servants’ way of speaking. Its negative connotation is subverted by headlining a work that illuminates the importance of working class narratives. Servants were not allowed keys to the houses they tended, Mollspeak kicks down these doors. The work takes two forms, onsite as an eleven-channel sound installation inside the Museum of the Home’s Undercroft chamber, and online as a broadcast 24-minute long sound piece, which we are delighted to host at @mercurius_magazine for a two week limited period from 27 December 2021 to 9 January 2022. Maria Fusco is an award winning, working-class writer, practicing across the registers of fiction and performance. Maria’s hybrid, interdisciplinary work is concerned with borders, class, and the socio-political voice; it is published internationally and translated into ten languages. She has been commissioned by bodies including: Artangel, BBC Radio 4 and National Theatre Wales. mariafusco.net Olivier Pasquet is a composer. His generative pieces are synesthetic, minimalistic and maximalistic working across mixed media often having strong links with architecture, design and specific sites. During the Vietnam war the CIA recruited Hmong villagers who trained and fought alongside US troops in the “Secret War”. But in 1973 the US pulled out of the war, leaving the Hmong to fight against the communist forces alone, which by 1975 the country of Laos had fallen. To escape retribution thousands of Hmong fled to Thailand to seek refuge, but the only thing blocking them from their freedom was the Mekong River. Even if they didn’t know how to swim they still tried and many did not make it. An estimated 50,000+ Hmong died crossing the river between 1975-1990s. This piece is definitely one of my favorite and proudest work so far in this semester. This project was about recontextualizing a person, place or thing and I did a place, the Mekong River. This river was the starting point of my people, the reason for why my parents, grandparents, my family are here today living in America. I grew up hearing stories of my parents experiences with living in Ban Vinai, one of the refugee camps, and immigranting to the US which has always been on my mind since. I’ve created an audio narrative as well as visual pieces for this prompt. The audio consists of sounds from free sound sites and the man speaking in the audio is actually my dad! His acting was so spot on which got me so excited to share this piece. It was definitely vulnerable for me to make a work about my family’s experiences with immigration but i think that’s what makes this piece very powerful. It’s of something that I’m passionate about and it’s a part of me and who i am, the history of my people and their journey. For our final episode of this week’s Dungeon Synth Sunday, we are very proud to present the latest tales to emerge from Guildmaster Ingsmith’s intimate fantasy world of Winterstead. Autumn Bohollow continues Ingsmith's journey through the lands of Winterstead, in the intricately detailed, fully absorbing audio-narrative style which has characterised Guild of Lore’s previous albums, introducing the people and places of this fantasy world, and embroiling us in their perilous and personal incidents of their adventure. This latest album sees our hero arriving at the idyllic town of Bohollow, for a much-deserved respite after surviving the treacherous passage through the Ghastly Gates. However, as wholesome as this village appears, things are not always as they seem, and the bucolic soon turns to the Macabre as Ingsmith’s quest continues to reveal itself. And speaking of ‘reveals’, for the first time, we get to hear the voice of our hero, with a few segments of spoken word from the Guildmaster himself, making this uniquely rich experience of this album even moreso.
