The reality of my thoughts when hiking. This hike made me realise how much more work I have to do before I take part in the Peak District Marathon hike this coming July. As I climbed over 1000ft I kept thinking things like: 🟡 Just a few more steps then stop to breathe again 🟡 Why didn’t I choose a more relaxing hobby 🟡 I’m so out of shape 🟡 Don’t fall, or trip 🟡 Oh no, my legs are shaking, please don’t give way as I go down this steep rocky slope 🟡 Finally a level surface! 🟡 This is much nicer I’m not out of shape but I am definitely not in shape either. Trying to climb up a steep hill on a hike is exhausting and I was being overtaken by loads of people. You just have to remember that it’s just a few more steps and you can do it. 🏁CARSINGTON HALF MARATHON 🏁 I've been out of practice for a while, well, since London Marathon, to be honest. A few scary episodes when I finished a couple of events put me to a grinding halt. Now I have the all-clear, and my mum is heading in the right direction (she's also been my focus for the last few months). I can concentrate on my training, eating whilst tackling life's daily routines. Aim of the race today - To make sure I had a PW (personal worst) and to see how I felt during and after the race. Verdict - pretty strong, my pace was pretty consistent all the way round, and I'd forgotten how up and down this course is. I'm pretty proud of my PW and look forward to seeing what 2023 holds. First race of 2021 completed yesterday! Entered a @maverickrace about 2 years ago and finally deferred onto this one in Bakewell. Until a week ago I thought it was roughly half marathon distance, then when I actually read the emails I discovered it was 27km… and on the day clocked 17.5miles!! Never been quite so unprepared for a race, but I was determined to enjoy the scenery and get round in one piece. Started these weeks as I plan to go on: Running, trails, fresh air, seeing little villages with cottages like out of The Holiday, thinking, not thinking, getting muddy, feeling connected. Also permitting myself to feel sadness, grieving, tears, watching all of the movies and reading a pile of books, do nothing, do yoga, cuddle the dog more than she may want, and bake a lot. This Christmas will be different & hard & okay & full of love & hope. We just have to keep looking up. Amazing what you can do if you thought you couldn’t. Work over the past month sucked all energy out of me. So much so I tried to talk myself out of this @peak.running Wayfarer run all past week. Told myself I was too slow, I would bonk, I would be half way up a hill and couldn’t run from a horny cow (as in, a cow with horns. What did you think. 🐮) - you name it. But the hills are my happy place, running is my happy space, and with a little help from my amazing running buddies who can make 16 miles fly by in no time (and without whom it would only be half as much fun to run through treacly mud), I did it. 26k and almost 3000ft elevation. If I can do this on zero energy, imagine the possibilities...
