This week is the first week of structured training on my @walterscoaching plan after the London Marathon. The volume is low and the miles are easy paced. Yesterday evening was an easy 5k, no strides. I’m still feeling tired and heavy. Hats off to all the London runners who were out racing again on Sunday, my legs could never! 😂 Also gutted to back in long sleeves in the wind and drizzle. Although maybe that’s just how 2024 rolls. Edd told me last night that there’s only been 14 completely dry days since October. 😩 It got me thinking about the London Marathon ballot for next year’s race. 840,000 applicants. Smashing last years record. I can understand how marathon fever grips the nation on the day of the race. Watching coverage of smiling and relieved runners, bouncing joyfully down The Mall and crossing the line in the beautiful sunshine. Maybe it should be tempered with a reel of training run “highlights”. Almost 600 miles, mostly run in darkness and almost exclusively in the rain. Double Medal Monday post...... I rarely do these but it was such a special day I really should. So time to reflect on yesterday. It was lush. I'll come back stronger and the dream is alive. As tired as I've felt today I've never felt so pumped and up for taking on some more marathon training. I just want to get started again. Use yesterday as a platform and base to build and boost again. It's not an if it will happen. But more of a case of when. Because it will happen. A bit of homework last night looks like I'll miss out on Boston. But that's just made me hungrier. 🏅 MEDAL MONDAY 🏅 (Yes I am claiming medal Monday for running a 1 mile family fun run with Edd and the kids). @lankylegskeepsrunning went ahead and smashed it out of the park yesterday at the Newport Marathon and I’m beyond proud ❤️ Obviously then the rest of the day and evening was given to breaking down the race, discussing what went well in training and on the day, things to improve on and, more importantly, planning our next adventures before giving our legs a proper chance to recover. We both ran BQ times, so plan A is to put our names into the hat for Boston 🦄. It’s a once in a lifetime trip, a big expense and would take a lot of planning. But the reasoning being both of us could get injured or run over and never run those sorts of times again. We are both roughly 5 mins below the cut off, so obviously that’s no guarantee. In fact, it would be pretty tight. After looking at the stats over the past couple of years, the application numbers for those with qualifying times is on the rise. There’s talk of tightening the BQ cut-offs to lower the number of applicants, similar to the London Marathon GFA times this year. If that’s the case, it’s no biggie. We have plan B, C, D…. Lots of amazing races to run and places to see. After a lovely weekend with my sister, nephew and neice, it was lovely to come home to a very over excited dog 🐕🥰 • I had such a fun time visiting my sister (as I always do) we did lots of playing and chatting and cuddling (the kids not my sister and me 🤣😂). Leo’s very into Happy Potter now, which I’m here for in a big way 🤩🥳 Arrived home, managed to coax Indy out for a sunny saunter, before swapping my wellies for my trainers and heading out for some evening sunshine. ☀️ Which was soooo lovely after the non-stop rain 🌧️ all morning. Managed to drag along my lovely friend Jana for a Saturday morning run as part of our girls catch up weekend 🙌🙌 And made it to a new @parkrunuk , my third closest at the lovely Wimbledon Common 🌳 It was a PROPER slip and slide yesterday after a night full of rain with some serious mud and puddles - I would recommend not wearing your shiny new clean pink running shoes like I did….which are now very much not clean and more brown 😂 However it is a lovely off-road course which I will definitely be back for! A two lapper through the trails, however I’d definitely describe it as a summer course after yesterday’s mud fest 👣 A much smaller turnout than my local parkrun which was nice, although still 400 odd people so not exactly small. Some excellent canine runners too 🐕 and even an on-course photographer! Only downside was not seeing a proper purple parkrun sign, which as everyone knows, is the only accepted evidence you went to a parkrun 👀🤨 We settled for a photo with the Wimbledon windmill but I better go back and find the sign another time! Ring the PB bell 🔔 1:42:33 😭 Not going to lie it was hard but today made me realise I can do hard things!!! The conditions were against everyone today, not just me, but so many people came away with PB’s! Can’t believe how many different PB’s I got on Strava, but I am so proud of myself that I came 1st in my age category even if I didn’t get a podium finish but I am well and truly proud of that because I’ve never come first in my age in a race! So proud of the kids for not complaining about the weather, my cheer squad were amazing (even if they almost missed me coming through the finish line 🙈😂)! Newport 10k - 37:24 Well, what can I say other than I love it when a plan comes together 🙌 After falling short of sub 40 last year, I was more determined than ever to make sure that i took it this year. I made a commitment to myself to go all out this year. I started eating better to lose some weight and let @pauls.performance.plans take care of the training plan 👌 Despite a rough week (mainly brought on by my own stresses about the race), I made it to the start line confident that I’d run under 40, but unsure of how much lower I could go. Conditions were great and I got off to a quick start. Bagged some great early miles and time with @cbleasdale.16 before the turn into the wind. Also found a great little group to share turns on the front over the last couple of tough km’s and just gave it all I had in the lead up to the line. Plan A was 38:20, Plan B was anything under 40 so I’m not sure where this came from. Soggy wet 10km with @griffiths.m Well this weather can do one . Absolutely pissed it down all night but I’d put it off long enough after waking up that I just needed to get it done . I asked @griffiths.m if she was coming and her immediate reply was nahhhh . Imagine my surprise when she started to get ready . Off we went and we where soon wet through but just got it done , Marcia did amazing and was her first continuous 10km in a very respectable time . Time to ring that 🔔 again. What a great morning. It was the inaugural Cycle Route 43, Ystalyfera parkrun today. It’s only a couple of miles from my house so I got to run there and home afterwards. Lots of my running friends and club friends were there, so as usual like all parkruns there was a really nice atmosphere. Before this week I’ve only ever run one sub 20 min 5k (19.52) and that was @raceforvictory back in 2022. I’ve somehow managed to run sub 20 mins twice this week. I did go a little faster on Wednesday but this is my fastest parkrun and fastest official 5k and I am very happy.
