今日はDuMolの醸造家 Andy Smithのセミナーに参加。 曰く、Wine Growerと自負している通り、ワイナリーでは、 ８０％の人員が畑、２０％の人員がワイナリーで従事。 畑は、肥沃な粘土質の平地を避け、東向きの斜面のGreen Valleyを中心に。 畑は９０００本／haの世界でも珍しい密植に。 密植のため日影が多く、Cool Soilがバクテリアの繁殖を活性化。 →元気な土地でアロマがよく、密植のため実が小さく凝縮した風味に。 醸造は、100%MLF。☜WSETで勉強しました！RRVは酸が強いのでMLFが必要！ただ飲んでみると、MLFの特徴であるバターの風味がないんですよね~。 すかさず質問すると、 『15~18か月樽熟成をしているので、澱がバターの風味をとる』とのことでした。 なるほど！ 試飲はどれもおいしかったです。 シャルドネは、果実味と酸味がバランスよくとっても美味しい。 面白かったのが 2017 Montecillo Sonoma Mayacamus山脈の西側斜面となり、NapaのMayacamus山脈の東側との違いを実感。 強い西日の日差し受ける西側斜面の特徴と、アーシーな風味が印象的。 Napa Valley 2017年 Coomsbill、Oakville、St.Helena、Spring Mt.のブレンド。 Coomsbillの日差しと、Oakvilleのエレガントさ、St.Helenaの暖かさ、Spring Mtの力強さが、バランスよく調和していて親しみやすく、とってもおいしかったです！ 直接醸造家に聞くと色々と面白いです。 #dumol #russianrivervalley #sonomacounty #californiawine #wset

2017 DuMol - Jentoft Vineyard 'Ryan' - Green Valley, Russian River Valley, California, USA - 14,1% ABV The lush and verdant Russian River Valley is one of the great sources of superlative Pinot Noir on Earth. Williams-Selyem was the very first list I joined, which exposed me to a level of elegant winemaking that wasn't easily found in American wine stores. Brinkmanship is negotiated every vintage in the region to coax the right balance of alcohol and extract, with an ever-looming threat of jamminess. DuMol can count themselves among the true stewards of Pinot Noir with exacting care and control over every possible element of vitification and vinification. The high-elevation Jentoft Vineyard (presently Dutton-Jentoft) is their southernmost site in the Russian River Valley and claimed to be their site of highest potential. A shimmering medium ruby-red robe with a translucent meniscus, the first pour immediately reveals the beautiful lifted aspects of stem inclusion with sour red cherries, bright raspberry, blueberries, and damsons. This is pure, clean fruit blanketed by brambles and rose with a dusting of vanilla, smoke, graphite, gravel, and toast. You might think that this is not completely dry, based on the sweetness of the ripe fruits on offer, but you'd likely be relieved that proportionality is on offer. A robust medium(+) body knits a fresh, juicy medium(+) acidity together with a delightful medium(+) fruit intensity and concentration lent by 15 months of aging on 45% new French oak. Fruits surprisingly a bit underripe--strawberries, cranberries, black cherries, blueberries, and blue damsons. This could be explained by the 2017 vintage being harvested on the early side at the end of August. Fine streaks of gunflint, graphite, and leather throughout. There is a medium level of vice-grip tannins. Ripe, and with staying power, you'll feel these on the roof and back of the tongue. A long-lasting finish building up a dune on the backpalate, only giving way to the next crimson tide that rolls in. Enjoy now with no reservations. 👎 🇺🇸 DuMOL Wester Reach Chardonnay 2019 (듀몰 웨스터 리치 샤도네이) ❓️ Sonoma County, Russian River를 기반으로 피노 누아와 샤도네이 와인을 주력으로 만들고 있는 DuMOL은 1996년 당시 설립자의 자녀들 이름에서 그 이름을 가져왔다. (Duncan + Molly) 처음엔 포도를 사서 와인을 만들던 네고시앙 형태로 시작해, 몇년 후 와인양조가 Andy Smith가 합류하고 오너쉽도 바뀌면서 점점 도멘 형태로 진화하였다. 2011년 오바마와 중국 주석 후진타오와의 만남 때 백악관 만찬주로 채택되면서 점점 유명세를 타기 시작한 DuMOL은 Hubert Lamy 처럼 고밀도 식재와 낮은 일드를 가져가는 방식으로 와인의 농축미를 이끌어낸다. 🥂 파인애플, 복숭아, 시트러스. 은은한 바닐라. 한 시간 정도 열어놓고 식당으로 가져갔는데 잔에 따르기 전부터 코가 자극될 정도로 발향이 아주 좋았다. 팔렛에선 레몬, 시트러스, 복숭아, 리치 등의 풍부한 과실미와 오크 터치가 느껴졌고 미디엄+ 바디에 미네랄리티도 꽤나 좋았던. 화려한 오크터치나 복합미가 뛰어나다고 보긴 어려웠지만, 과실의 집중도가 좋아 꽤 맛있게 마셨다. 와모에 가면 창렬한 가격에 누워있으니.. 살거면 직구 추천~ ✔️ 8만, 미국 직구 (‘21년) 9️⃣3️⃣+ #DuMOL #WesrerReach #Chardonnay #듀몰 #웨스터리치 #샤도네이 #winestagram #와인스타그램 #팔각도

Winemaker, Viticulturist and Partner Andy Smith leads a small and experienced team at DuMOL, to craft wines of depth, clarity and elegance through attention to detail in the vineyards and vintage-specific winegrowing. DuMOL believes the best fertilizer is the footsteps of the farmer and is dedicated to a portfolio of estate and grower-partner vineyards primarily within a 10 mile radius. Expanding upon twenty-five years of experience, DuMOL also grows and produces small-lot Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Mencía from some of the finest vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. This is their richest and deepest Estate Pinot Noir since the wonderful 2012 bottling, and it’s certainly the most powerful Pinot of the vintage, befitting of our finest vineyard. That’s not to say, however, the wine lacks energy or poise, as it is vibrant, lively and intense with a clear vineyard signature at its core. The wine dances on the palate, all its elements in beautiful equilibrium, with a clarity that’s derived from precise vineyard work, not winemaking technique; it’s a pure translation of the vines and grapes themselves. They harvested a strict selection from our three favorite micro-parcels within the wider Estate Vineyard: higher-elevation areas where the soils transition from fluffy/sandy to richer clay. As such, the wine balances sandy soil aromatic intensity—tart fruits, floral and spice notes, and an herbal vein—with richer, deeper clay-derived body and depth—cherry compote, dark fruits and obvious texture. There’s gorgeous elemental Pinot flavor throughout: zesty, linear and focused with a long granular structure that offers extended aging potential of 10 to 12 years. The birthday party continued with a memorable, wine soaked lunch @67pallmallsg where we celebrated my original love: Sonoma, with amongst the best from the region and all en magnum. The Chardonnay to start was the Dumol 2014 20th anniversary edition from the Russian River. A rich buttery mouthfeel exhibiting the Russian River Style, but cut through with a fine acidic line. Sharp citrusy notes on entry and white fruit with good breadth at the back end. Expressive Sonoma style and amongst the best I’ve had from this estate. 👍 Onto the Pinots and Martinelli’s Blue Slide Ridge 2013. A vineyard made famous by Helen Turley who used to source fruit from here and is my best lieux dits in Sonoma. Color was belying its age. Black Cherries 🍒, whole cluster, broody Volnay style. Good acidity. Expected more elegance but this bodybuilder needs time. In for the long haul. Can easily last 15 years more. Format shows 💪 The Hirsch San Andreas 2012 on the other hand was Elegance personified. From amongst Sonoma Coast’s highest vineyards and Coming in at a 12.9% abv, it showed pureed strawberries, Soy sauce, aged balsamic and Chinese tea. Precise with a long finish. Good thing we popped and poured. Amongst the leanest Pinots to come out of the region though with a complex character. 😎 We were done after this and brought an end to a crazy weekend 🤪 Stay safe and drink wine 🍷 🍷

Dumol Wester Reach Pinot Noir 2021 Russian River Valley, California Cash Price $79.79 Dumol continues to consistently produce some of the most classic wines in the Russian River Valley with Andy Smith leading the way as the viticulturist and wine maker for over 20 years. Dumol was started in 1996 with a focus on finding highly nuanced, cool site specific vineyards to craft wines of unique characteristics and terroir. As I tasted this wine with their National Sales Manager, I immediately knew that this would be one of my Top Picks of the year. I rarely give away what I truly think of the wine in a tasting, but I really couldn’t stop the smile that kept creeping onto my face as I tasted through these wines. The 2021 vintage may be the best vintage they have produced from the Wester Reach Vineyards (a blend of three sub districts on the furthest western stretches of the Russian River Valley AVA). The wine is 100% Pinot Noir with a medley of clones (Calera, Swan, Pommard, Dijon) and was aged for 15 months in 20% new French oak. Wester Reach offers a delightfully bright nose with amazing floral notes. Classic flavors of dark cherry and framboise flow into sleek, brilliant tannins and zesty acids. The mid palate gives hints of blueberry and cola that lead into whiffs of earthy minerality and button mushroom. The finish is vivacious with notes of clove, exotic spices, and just a tinge of tea leaf and cedar. JUST WOW! 🥇 Spottswoode Estate 2021 🥇 . A few weeks ago i was invited to taste the new vintage 2021 of Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon in the presence of CEO Beth Noval Milliken and MW Fiona Morrison. Concluding with a tasting of some elder vintages going back to 2010 to give us some context 🍷 . Within the last decade the 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2019 recieved 💯 points by WineAdvocate’s writer Lisa Perotti-Brown. I was super excited to taste this wines as this is a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience and have a retail price of around €300, which is, believe it or not, actually relatively affordable for a multiple 💯 point Napa Valley wine! . 2021 announced itself as an incredibly impressive vintage for Californian wines…. And Indeed! 2021 lived up to my expectations, which is not easy to achieve! More red fruit dominant, at this stage with a slightly elevated, fresh acidity. The wine has just enough weight to balance this acidity. Unbelievable lenght! The longest of the whole evening. There was only 1 question that came up to my mind after this tasting: how are you going to give it more than 💯 points, Lisa? 🍷 . In the mean time, luckily again i could taste more of Californian vintage 2021. Dumol Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay just passed my palate a few days ago… This is compared to previous years i tasted (2016, 2019) an outstanding wine of utmost quality that will easily blow away Burgundy premier cru chardonnays from Côte de Beaune. DuMol 2018 Carneros Napa Valley Hyde vinyard Chardonnay Each time when opening a DuMol wine brings me back to California where I visited DuMol some years ago. This chardonnay is drinking very wel now, I find among other things some citrus fruit, lemon grass and oak. The wine is creamy, med bodied and precise. The aftertaste comes with a mineral med to high acidity. This is not a full option Californian chardonny, and I am wondering how many people will think about a Puligny or Chassagne Montrachet, when tasted blind. Domestic Wine Buyer Ryan Woodhouse was out in the vineyards earlier this week with Andy Smith of DuMOL. He took some beautiful shots of the fruit and the fields. Pictured here: Pinot Noir from the DuMOL Estate; Chardonnay from Morelli Vineyard. The fruit in the bins is the first Pinot Noir of the vintage at DuMOL. So what can we expect from the 2023 vintage? He says: "This 2023 vintage is looking great so far. Andy is super happy with quality and quantity. Hopefully no big weather events or fires in the next few weeks and it will be and VERY good vintage. Great flavors, high acids, moderate sugars from the cool, late, growing season. Pinot clusters and berries are very small, high skin-to-juice ratio for good color and power plus the high acids. Chardonnay looks great too. The farming at DuMOL is very meticulous. The estate where most of these photos are from is a very high-density planting, organically farmed. Goldridge soils that range from clay loam to super fluffy sand that they call "moon dust." To say we can't wait to taste this fruit once it's in our glass is an understatement!
