Conditions really make a difference. A few weeks ago I put some tomato starts (2 plants per most varieties I sowed) into our unheated greenhouse. I had lots of each in the heated potting room already, and simply ran out of space. So, out of curiosity, I thought I might see how the plants do protected, but unheated. The first photo is a tomato plant in the potting room where it’s anywhere from 10-35° depending on the time of day/sun strength (and how fast I remember to open the window). The second is the starts in the unheated greenhouse. My hand is in both photos for scale. While warm weather plants might not die in cooler weather (as long as they don’t get hard frost), they are 2-3 times smaller than the plants in my heated potting room. This stunting may also have an impact on fruit yield and quality, but honestly they may just get composted because I have plenty of healthy, strong starts coming and the stunted ones might not be worth the space! So, don’t rush your heat loving plants out. Keep your zinneas, cosmos, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, melons and those types of plants can and should wait! Many of them can be direct-seeded in mid May on the west coast and will thrive. Courgettes and Summer Squash Technically courgettes are summer squashes, all of which are harvested at an immature stage when the skins are relatively thin. As anyone who has grown courgettes and gone on holidays will know, if left to mature they transform into thick skinned marrows in the blink of an eye. All summer squash have similar growth habits in that they grow fast from vigourous plants which produce many fruits. Broadly speaking, they are easy to grow but need plenty of nutrients and water to support all that growth so should be planted in a very fertile, moisture retentive soil. If you would like to grow something a bit different from the usual long and green courgette, you could try a yellow 'pattypan' summer squash like 'Sunbeam F1' (above) or 'Eight Ball' which produces handy round, green fruits. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐬𝐡 The past several years, we’ve been most impressed with how easy it is to grow, harvest, cure, and store winter squash for use right through to the next growing season…specifically Butternut, Spaghetti, and Delicata squash. This was our last 2023 garden Spaghetti squash—roasted and enjoyed for dinner mid-April 2024. Winter squash refers to squash planted in spring, grown in summer, harvested in fall, and stored for winter use. Preparation for storage, called “curing”, is a form of drying—allowing time for excess moisture in the squash to simply evaporate and the skins to harden. This slows the fruit’s respiration rate, and makes it resistant to rot or damage—important for long-term storage. Also, as water evaporates from the squash, natural sugars are concentrated and the squash becomes sweeter tasting. When harvesting, carefully prune the squash away from the vine leaving a 2 to 4 inch stem to cure with the squash. (Squash that are mature & ready to harvest will have a hard, dull rind that’s resists scratching with your fingernail.) Do not wash the squash with water. Simply wipe off any dirt with a dry towel. TIMING NOTE: Squash harvested after frost will be sweeter but will not store as long as squash harvested before frost. It’s that time of the year again, where I share my squash growing tip! Essentially, any pumpkin, squash, cucumber (cucurbits) will grow in the opposite direction to their first true leaf. Ignore the first two baby leaves, when that true leaf pops out, I always put my plant label in the opposite side of the pot to give me the direction of growth. This is super helpful for if you’re planning on growing along a certain bed, up an archway or over a structure. I’m personally not sowing my squashes until it gets warmer/the end of the month at the earliest as later plants that don’t fight over resources (in this case sunlight and warmth), grow to be stronger, earlier. What to sow in April for polytunnel/greenhouse planting in May. 🍅 Choose cherry varieties for late sowings of tomatoes as they ripen quicker, so you will get more from the season. You can also sow marigolds in pots/trays now to have them ready to plant into the beds along with your tomatoes in a few weeks time. Towards mid-April you can sow 🌱 Cucumber 🌱 Courgette 🌱 Basil 🌱 Pumpkin 🌱 Squash 🌱 French bean 🌱 Runner bean 🌱 Sweetcorn 🌱 Melon Cucumber, courgette, pumpkin and squash will germinate better at 22-25˚C, but all will germinate at 18˚C if you don't have separate propagators. 🌡️ Once they have come up, you can reduce the temperature to 14-16˚C unless you are using grow lights, or seedlings will become leggy. ♨️ A centrally heated room is usually around 20˚C, so all vegetables will germinate on a warm windowsill. You can add a tinfoil backing behind the seedlings to reflect the light. 🥶 If using a heat bench in the polytunnel cover with fleece at night to be on the safe side. Make sure to keep the sand damp. 🎃 If courgette, pumpkin or squash are to be grown in the tunnel, April sowing is best but if they are to be planted outside, delay sowing until late April/early May. 💦 Don't forget to give the soil in your polytunnel/greenhouse the occasional watering, even if there are no plants in it. #SoilLife Congratulations to all the new polytunnel/greenhouse growers joining us. The second big haul of squash from the garden includes plenty of pumpkins, the enormous tromboncino, a beautiful butternut squash and a couple of spaghetti squash. There are now a couple of shelves full of squash in the garage that are all ready for roasting and souping, once the weather cools down. The dreaded squash vine borer - those nasty little larvae that kill your squash from the inside out by hollowing out the vines. Sure, you can watch for and remove eggs or “surgically” remove the larvae. OR, you can plant strategically to avoid the situation all together. Out of the nearly 1,000 species of squash, there are three you’re likely to grow in your garden, and ONE that has dense vines impenetrable to squash vine borers. 1) Pepo squashes - acorn squash, delicata, summer squash (including zucchini), some specialty pumpkins 2) Maxima squashes - buttercup, hubbard, kabocha, giant pumpkins 3) VINE BORER RESISTANT: Moschata squashes - butternut, crookneck, most pumpkins So while you may love a good summer squash, or the most delicious buttercup, if you’re having this problem you’re better off opting for a trusty butternut or Canada crookneck. Way better…simple baked squash…. My pumpkin soup fail was righted by the tried and true approach to cooking squash - put it in the oven with a little olive oil. Salt, pepper, and butter to taste; best way we have found to eat squash. The world could survive on pumpkins if there was enough salt and butter! The Hubbard squash has an amazingly tough skin/shell. Hard to cut even given the age and recent freeze. I have a vision for my arches where there would be flowers at the front, sweet peas growing up the set of poles and marigolds at the bottom. Following on from that, there would be zucchini, cucumber & tromboncino with tomatoes in front. The reality is somewhat different 🤣 random squash plants from the compost and peas from the pea straw are taking over. The first zucchini plant hadn’t actually died so now there are 3 in there 😳 and just growing out rather than up, which means the tomato plants are being smothered!! 🤣 To be fair, I’m just pleased that I’m finally able to grow zucchini again. This year, I grew acorn squash for the first time - a fun variety called Mashed Potatoes, due to its color and smooth texture. I've only eaten acorn squash once, decades ago, and I didn't like it. BUT back in those days, I ate a Standard American Diet, eaten zero truly fresh produce. Butternuts 🌱 •how it started - how it’s going! my first round of butternut actually died when I transplanted them (because I started gardening in the winter so it was just a big mess - not the right time of year to plant most plants) but I planted some new seeds in my garden and transplanted some baby plants that had sprouted in my compost heap and now they are so happy! 🌱✨ •i had some trouble getting female flowers so o followed some tips and tutorials on YouTube which seem to have worked well! PUMPKIN HARVEST TIME! 🎃🍂 I’m absolutely blow away I grew as many pumpkins and other squashes and gourds as I did! 11 orange pumpkins harvested and sitting on the porch so far and still about 9 green ones still growing, 24 of the yellow crooked necked’s, 6 white patty pan’s, and 5 other random one’s. 3 of the pumpkins are 40+lb’s, I tried to kneel next to them but it still doesn’t show size comparison very well. A perfect day for harvesting squash! A very good year for squash. We only grow Crown Prince and Uchiki Kuri now for taste, but I'm using up a few New England Pie seeds too. Two wheelbarrows full. We've managed to balance most of them on the rodent proof scaffold plank in the polytunnel for now (a little precarious), and the rest will just have to take their chances in the wheelbarrow. Eventually they will take over all free surfaces in the house.
