Planting up kale with my dad in his garden. He made this frame with bits he had lying round the garden. And then I convinced him to put in many less kale plants than he wanted to. Then I made a grid, watered it, and planted Carrots, Lettuce, Radish and Beetroot. Should be a productive little, no dig, polyculture. Jujube date- ziziphus jujube mill Originating from China and used traditionally in Chinese medicine for thousands of years, they are packed with nutrients and antioxidants. The taste resembles an apple yet also a date and they are often sold dried as the picking season for fresh is only a month or two. A deciduous tree that can get to 5 to 10 m tall, they enjoy a long hot summer with a cool winter to go dormant in and so are great in southern inland Australia. Our is growing in the hot areas of the forest that is protected from wind and this year is the first year we have had fruit. The tree is around 6 years old and dose grow quite slowly. Plant can be expensive ranging from $130 each from specialty growers. A really unique tree that is defiantly worth it if you have the right spot! Vorige week heb ik de lathyrus eindelijk in de grond gezet 🌱 Eindelijk omdat ik deze eind februari (al) had voorgezaaid en ze er nu toch wel aan toe zijn om de grond in te gaan. De wortels groeien het wc rolletje al uit, dus de gok maar genomen want: nachtvorst. Maar ze staan nog steeds! Tegen een rek van bijna 2 meter hoog en tussen de rolletjes heb ik nog wat zaadjes gezaaid. Nu ben ik benieuwd of het voorzaaien veel verschil maakt, behalve dat je eerder plantjes hebt 😉 Benieuwd hoe ik de lathyrus heb voorgezaaid? Check de link in mijn bio 🙌🏼

Nu börjar mikrodwarfarna i fönstren skifta färg lite här och där. ’Jochalos’ är snabbast, men även ’Red Robin’ och ’Orange Dream’ börjar mogna. För mig finns det ett stort värde i att så de här tidigt och därmed få skörd några månader innan den stora tomatskörden. Av flera skäl. De ger mig mat. Och jag vill helst inte köpa tomater i butik. Polytunnel upgrade Polytunnel has had a bit of a tidy up and overhaul from summer. Weeds have gone and floor has been redone with cardboard and gravel. Old chilli and pepper plants out and new ones in to overwinter. Nothing happened with the eggplants this year so we've left a few in and planted lettuce around them, we'll see if they overwinter and try next year. Tomatoes and cucumbers still going strong and new seedlings have got a bit leggy in the other smaller greenhouse so we've moved them in to get the best of the light and heat. Gravel paths have been a game changer in my garden. Here are the before and after shots of my recent garden reno/tidy up. I used to have wood shavings on my paths but after rain they would get sludgy and boggy from the clay soil beneath. It was always a dirty muddy mess collecting eggs from the chicken coop after rain. So I decided to replace the old decayed timber garden edging with new timber sleepers and put down a heavy layer of pea gravel. This meant digging and levelling out the paths, and putting any soil into the adjacent garden beds. I decided to go with a barrier of geofabric before laying the gravel to keep the gravel from sinking into the clay over time. I'm so pleased with the results. No more filthy feet after rain now. So if they throw another el Nino weather pattern at us again, this time I'll be ready! P.S. 🥒 It’s the final zucchini! If you had told me back in November last year when I put these seedlings in that I’d get this much zucchini off three plants, I’d would have laughed in your face. If you’ve seen me between November and March, there’s a good chance I’ve handed you a zucchini straight from the garden or something made with zucchini in it! We've been making our own pasta for about a year now. Temperature and humidity was finally good enough yesterday to attempt drying. Hung them to dry ladt night and awoke this morning to crisp easy to break noodles. We will eat them later this week to see how they are. Before and afters really are amazing things. It might not seem like a lot has changed but after weeks of repairing beds, raking soil, fixing gutters, clearing piles and piles of wood, metal, plastic and insulation. Creating a compost heap, 3 working water butts, a working useable door on the netted bed. Planting fruits and vegetables as well as growing seedlings in the tidy clean greenhouse. Things are finally coming together 😅 still plenty to do but it’s nice to see how far it’s come since signing the tenancy a month ago.
