I had a wonderful time this weekend at #muse24 put on by @grubwriters. (And as usual I didn't remember to take enough photos) I taught sessions on new trends in Latina horror and writing strong narrative voice in fiction, and had a fabulous publishing q&a with @hogiewrites. @writerjalvarez I just finished reading this book and it exceeded my expectations! It took me 3 days to complete. That’s a record for me 😝I loved loosing myself in the fantasy of these characters who didn’t get their chance for their stories to be told on paper, but were able to tell their stories through the magic and mystical world of the cemetery they were buried in. This book came into my life at such a perfect moment! I have been having a very difficult time managing my anxiety this past month. Being able to read this story and get lost in this magical world was exactly what my soul needed. Thank you for not burying this story. Thank you for sharing it with us. On May 5, 2023, I found out I was a recipient of the “2023 Connecticut Artistic Excellence Award” and when I tell you, I sobbed. The funds from the award saved my creative life last year. I was going through a tough time, both financially and mentally. Knowing that I’d have funds allotted only toward my creative writing endeavors definitely fueled me. The funds allowed me to purchase a new laptop, pursue the longest solo road trip I’d ever been on to attend my first writing residency @craigardan, and purchase flights for another writing residency in Tennessee through @sundresspublications. I was also able to apply for other opportunities, pay for my domain/website upkeep, and other submission fees. All of this allowed me to continue to write, and I’m utterly grateful. I didn’t announce this last year because I was off social media, but I’m announcing it today, now that I’ve completed the final report for the fellowship. Thank you, @ctofficeofthearts, you have no idea the difference it made in my life this past year. And now, for another announcement. I’ll be leading a few writing workshops over the summer. The longest one, which will meet virtually over five weeks (woohoo!), is an Intro to Memoir Workshop with the wonderful @writewithwww. Registration opens Monday. How do you alchemize your pain into beautiful and sustainable self-expression that transforms into love to self and others? 📖🌹 For me, growing up surrounded by addiction in my family, I learned very early on about the powers of the arts to alchemize and process my emotions. 📖🌹 I grew up feeling pretty lonely so getting into singing, performing and writing at school was the way in which I re-directed my attention into something that felt good for my body and my soul. 📖🌹 At 15, I visited my school’s library and found a beautiful Andre Gide book that rocked my world. It was a beautiful turquoise antique book with gold foil and really thin pages. I was hipnotizad by it and the words in it. 📖🌹 Then, I discovered Dostoevsky,Sartre and Camus. I locked myself in my bedroom and read their masterpieces. I found peace and solace in their literature. And, I can’t forget about Alejandra Pizarnik, she introduced me to poetry. 📖🌹 Then, I got inspired to write my own. I wrote for hours in my grandmother’s home in Avenida Colombia. I created new worlds through my words.Back then, I did not know this would become my healing balm, my fortress of well-being and my creative oasis. 📖🌹 Through every season of my life, the alchemy of self-expression has come to rescue me. There was my theatre and performing arts season, my singing in musicals and at church season and my forever poetry season. 📖🌹 Nowadays, I feel so blessed to guide other people to alchemize their own pain through creative writing and storytelling. 📖🌹 To witness their personal transformation in front of my eyes after months of working together is something MAGICAL🪄 📖🌹 It is my wish that you can find your own way to turn your pain into art and that it become a bridge for others to cross to the other side with you…. National Poetry Month is a time of year when we celebrate all things poetry throughout the month of April. But, of course, the celebration tends to favor dead, white poets instead of living Latina poets from our community. Latinas in poetry is nothing new and this month we wanted to celebrate the collections coming out this year. That’s why we decided to put together a round-up of poetry collections that are coming out from the Latina poetry community. It’s important for our voices to be uplifted and centered in these spaces that have historically erased and/or downplayed our stories. It’s National Poetry Month which was originally created by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 to celebrate and increase awareness for poets and poetry across the U.S. While this genre in the mainstream is often centered on old dead white men, there is no shortage of talented Latina poets putting pen to paper to create masterful poetry. While the likes of Elizabeth Acevedo, Yesika Salgado, and Melissa Lozada-Oliva, to name a few, have received critical acclaim and accolades which helped uplift Latinas in this space, this list is devoted to the up-and-coming Latinas poets gaining success in their own right. We love seeing Latina authors paving the way and advocating for greater representation of our community in publishing. We especially love it when they get rewarded for their work like Elizabeth Acevedo winning the NAACP Image Award in Fiction for her adult debut Family Lore earlier this year. Most recently, Puerto Rican author Lizette Epps, who is also a community leader, businesswoman, and advocate, has received critical acclaim for her debut Our Voices: Little Stories Through a Latina Lens, an anthology of short stories centering the Latinx diaspora across the U.S. On April 6, in recognition of her groundbreaking work, the book won first place at The Spring 2024 BookFest awards ceremony in the Non-fiction Category in Society & Social Sciences on Race, Class, Culture, & Religion, according to Berks Weekly. A couple of years ago when I came back from a hiking expedition in Patagonia, I recall thinking that I wanted to find answers as I climbed my way through those difficult paths. 🏔️ Along the way, I stopped forcing the outcome and came away with a different outcome. I wasn't coming back to the same set of problems where I was filled with doubt and sabotaging my own efforts by listening to external forces that did not bring joy to my being. ✍🏼 On that trip, I got the idea to write one of my first blogs, The Next Ten Steps: How to Keep Going When You Can't See the Finish Line (maldonadostrategies.com) and it has been a game changer when you take time to invest in yourself and identify internal and external blockers from being your true self. I am starting to embrace (more and more) the fact that my life is and has been unconventional in many ways throughout the years. Sure, I’ve had seasons where I have lived a more “normal” lifestyle to many people, but the truth is that as a creative person, my soul craves new experiences and seeks inspiration in the beauty of different cultures and people. 📚 The beauty of all of this is that - the more I have these kinds of experiences I realize that there are many ways to LIVE and we get to intentionally create our own way to spend our short or long days on this planet.🌎 📚 After my divorce, I am currently reflecting on what this “new life” will look like for me at this particular stage of my life. 💛 The first week of National Poetry Month my main focus have been poems centered in reflecting parts that need to bloom through self love. 💛 Poet by night, writer by night. 💛Before bed I have been writing. I hope after this 30 day challenge, that i let this become a habit. 💛For most of my life I have been doing things alone. I love solitude. But my journey has been filled with so much love of others. I just have a very difficult time letting love, care come from others because I am still learning to give that to myself. 💛 I am the one that is the giver but this year is that I am going to let myself receive Be the receiver and to choose to let go of things that i cannot control. To receive the same love I give to myself. 💛 I choose to not hide parts of me. To let others help me. To opening the other side of the bigger story that I am not alone.
