I love when authors use folklore in their novels. @veronicaroth uses Slavic folklore as inspiration in her newest fantasy novel, When Among Crows. The story is set in Chicago but features Baba Jaga. I found this depiction to be unique since the witch, Baba Jaga, is typically seen in a forest instead of an urban setting. I also loved the characters, Dymitr and Ala. I highly recommend checking out this audiobook especially if you love modern folklore books. The narration is top notch. "Your Utopia", by Bora Chung (translated from Korean by Anton Hur) A collection of short stories that touch on themes of connection, loneliness, and technology. I read ‘Cursed Bunny’ last year and loved it, so I was very excited to pick up this new collection and was not disappointed. It has less body horror than Bunny and leans more into science fiction, but has the same addictive combination of sharp humour, aching humanity, and creeping horror. In just a few pages Chung can build and drop you into a world that is bizarre and shocking while also being eerily familiar. Worlds where immortality researchers stress about party planning, unconscious criminal suspects have their brains scanned by the government, people flee on spaceships to escape outbreaks of contagious cannibalism, and a smart elevator forms a parasocial relationship with a building occupant. Relationships between humans and technology are a theme throughout. In one surprisingly moving story a sentient electric car tries to survive and find purpose in a post-human earth. I described it to a friend as “imagine if Guillermo del Toro wrote a season of Black Mirror” and I stand by that. I cannot recommend her work enough, each story is a delightful glimpse into strange and terrifying worlds, with just enough humour and humanity to maintain a sense of hope by the end. Becks and Zephyr, two boating legends and dear friends photographed for my collaborative project Lore of the Lea. I'm very excited to start sharing work from this project as it's very close to my heart and my everyday life. Lore of the Lea is a communal reflection by women and non-binary boaters who live on the Lea: How do we connect to places? How does life on the move relate to the landscapes that surround us? What makes up the essence of our transient community? I will be sharing photos and quotes on Instagram, but these are only tiny snippets. To do the full breadth of the project and the amazing creative work submitted by participants justice, I am hoping to organise an exhibition in the summer. Some more images of the embroidered shirts that are part of my collaboration with @apres.lamour. I updated these upcycled men's buttondowns with embroidery inspired by Matyó men's holiday and wedding shirts from Northern Hungary, in most cases to cover a small stain or bit of schmutz with the stitching. We created several styles for a small collection - each with a unique bit of embroidery, each shirt is a unique piece. This embroidery style reached its wildest, most ornate iteration in the second half of the 19th century, and some believe it derives originally a way of blessing the shirts with these floral motifs, as a ward against evil. In many cases a young man's godmother would have embroidered the shirt for his coming-of-age, and men wore these shirts to their weddings, and later on special occasions. I'm including an image of one from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, with the classic Matyó peonies and leafy vines. The wide, long sleeves possibly hark back to ecclesiastical garments. There is a crochet edging along the sleeves, thick enough on some shirts that (I recently found out) it could be twisted up with the shirt sleeve into a pretty heavy ball just past the wearer's fist so that, in a pinch, it worked as a weapon in a bar brawl. (So... my first thought when I heard that was, hmm, I need to get better at crochet because that seems useful.) The colors used were primarily red, with just a little yellow and blue at first, though over time the embroidery and crochet both became much more colorful. Since these pieces are upcycled men's buttondowns, it seemed fitting to breathe new life into them (and a tiny blessing) with this traditional embroidery from men's shirts. I stuck to the color red for a more contemporary look. So pleased to be included in the juried show Contemporary Art: Folklore, Fakelore, Personal Myths & Narratives at the Bonita Historical Society Museum! My piece “Connected, Still” is just one of 60 pieces presenting new myths and tall tales, personal narratives and contemporary craft. My piece includes welded steel forms connected by snaking rope shapes covered in reclaimed textiles, inspired by the fact that, despite our perceived differences, we are all still connected as humans trying to do the best we can in the world. The Last Tale of the Flower Bride (Roshani Chokshi) transports me right back to the dark whimsy of my childhood, when faerie-tales were a coping mechanism. Told in split perspective over two time periods, I felt the youthful longing for real magic— and the relief in adulthood when the magic returns. . The writing was stunning, its rhythm addictive. Makes for an excellent early autumnal read : creepy, erring on the side of spooky, certainly not ‘scary’.. this book was just right. . . . . . . . .
