REVIEW! The Estate by Denzil Meyrick Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Review: Crime thriller fans who enjoy multiple POVs, flawed characters and inheritance drama will want to get their hands on this one. It follows the privileged Pallander family who have grown rich by suspicious means, and the life-threatening repercussions of their patriarch’s will. It also follows Detective Inspector Cara Salt, who has lost a lot in life but never her determination to do the right thing. All of the characters are memorable, though many are unlikeable, and the mystery is complex and well-crafted, leading you to form multiple theories and suspect lots of different people. The various antagonists have darkly realistic motivations such as greed, selfishness, revenge and classism, and this, along with the modern-day setting (against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict), makes it somewhat scarily/uncomfortably believable. I found some parts of the story fast-paced and hard to put down and others a fair bit slower, but overall this was another compelling and clever read by Denzil Meyrick. Thank you to @bantambooksuk for my copy in exchange for an honest review. #bookstagram #denzilmeyrick #theestate #bookreviews #bookreviewers #bookthoughts #bookcommunity #bookishopinions #bookrecs #bookrecommendations #booklovers #whatimreading #crimethrillers #crimebooks #crimefiction #thrillerbooks #thrillerreaders #mysterybooks #murdermysterybooks #whodunnit #detectivefiction #bookcovers #prettybooks #coverlove #newbooks #mybooks #bookoftheday #readersofinstagram #readingupdate #bantambooks

Been so bad with posting. Any tips? 🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌶🌶 Not my favorite book of the series but still adored this one! Carrissa Broadbent always knocks it out of the park! 📚Book Review📚 OK... so... I'm not sure we're to start. I was LOVING this book until around 60%. I was like "wow the universe just sent this book to my door how lucky am I?" And then I hated this book. The conflict, the resolution, the tropes, all of it. So I'm giving 3⭐, because I enjoyed most of it. but wow I'm sooo sad that it didn't end up being a higher rated book for me. I have to say that I adoooore the "favorite word" thing. so for my #QOTD what's your favorite word? why? #bookstagram #bookreview #booklover #canadianbookstagram #bookthoughts #momswhoreads #christinalauren

Such a cute romance!! The characters were so loveable and I enjoyed their banter. I loved this book but there was one scene that gave me the ick …. It was the scene where he comes over and they throw chocolate all over her apartment for fun… because she enjoys cleaning 😭. I’m sorry but immediately no. Immediate no. But other than that they were cute. Mr. Asshole was definitely being an asshole when he realized who navaeh was. He did not have to repeatedly shut her out because she was begging but I’m glad he came around. But also you definitely need to check out The Wedding Menu because that was an amazing five star read!!! Reading in 2024 2024 started big. As in a big reading slump. If I thought my experience is any way unique then myriad of booktube videos on this topics says otherwise. It seems I am on trend for once. I might read all the popular books two years late, but I plan my reading slumps with all the cool kids. In January I read one book (Yolk). There is no right or wrong amount of books a reader has to read in a month. But, for a person who has found so much enjoyment in reading, it’s an unsettling feeling when no book can hold our attention, no topic can interest you. It might have been the winter blues. February and March started looking up, I finished 3 books both months. Nonfiction and poetry books were easier for me to read. At that time I did read Detransition, Baby - mentally so exhausting to read, but I am happy that I read it, it’s an immensely relevant book. How did your reading year start in 2024, how is it going? Were you slumping with me?

Just me and my baby bump popping in with a review! ⁣ ⁣ Well…I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it. There were some aspects of this steampunk-style heist story that I felt were done perfectly, and other parts (like the romances🥴) that felt forced and rushed. I went in with very high expectations which could have been the reason this fell a bit too flat for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ However, as per usual, don’t let me deter you from reading this. If you enjoy YA fantasy, heist stories, vampires, and a bit of romance, this could be a hit for you!! Perfect when paired with your favorite freshly brewed tea and a recliner 🍵 3.25⭐️

"This isn't about winning any more. It's about surviving. Haven't you been paying attention?" ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Iron Teen: a geocaching competition where the winning team will go home with £5 million. For Ben, Lizzie Carmen, Will and Grady, it sounds like a fun way to spend their last summer together before university: an adventure. Until they open the first geocache and realise what they are supposed to put in... This book was my favourite kind of horror: completely normal. There was no supernatural here, just people demonstrating the worst of humanity. I always find that kind of horror much more scary and uncomfortable. Despite being a YA novel, this one went hard (or maybe I'm just a wimp. Lol.). Still, it was pretty graphic. I found it also played on my emotions - when the team felt scared, I felt scared. This was not one to read before bed! Because this was written in first person, the immersion was strong. This book has a sequel - Cruel Castle - which I have already read, so I kinda knew how this one would end. But that didn't make the journey any less exciting, and despite knowing roughly where this was going based on the other book, I was still surprised. I liked the five main characters. They all felt very individual and unique. I was a little surprised at how resourceful they were - at 18 I'd have had no idea of survival in the wilds. I'd have liked maybe a little more about their hobbies and them as people before the island to understand their skill sets. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this novel, and Cruel Castle while we're at it. But try and read them in the right order! Do you know what geocaching is? Have you tried it? #bookreview #horrorbooks #yabooks #yahorror #bryonypearce #redeyehorror #bookthoughts #readerlife #reading

I loved watching friends. One of my favourite shows to this day. So I was looking forward to reading Matthew Perry’s memoir or in this case listening to the audible.     This memoir was emotional knowing his fate, but also insightful, humorous and heart -wrenching as you listen to someone who by all accounts had it all. Only to be debilitated at various points by his mental state or addition to pills or alcohol. It certainly provided another perspective to this disease.     Certainly some insights to the making of Friends and other Hollywood escapades but the book really focused on his journey through those life moments and how coped or didn’t with addiction     Honest, heart-felt and incredibly funny. I enjoyed listening to this     #ripmatthewperry #friends #friendsloversandthebigterriblething #memoirs #bookstagram #booklove #bookcommunity #bookthoughts #readslikeamom #audible #listentobooks #readmorebooks #canadianbookstagrammer

I went in blind, & I’m so glad I did! I didn’t expect this to be such emotionally charged story. The way the book was divided into parts, plus the multiple POVs uncovered the layered backstory in a way that kept me glued to the pages. While I did see a few of the twists coming, it really didn’t matter or take away from the impact of the story at all. I was so invested in seeing how it all played out, & the end came together just right. 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: I’ll try to keep this one short and sweet because I’m sure many/most have seen this one circling bookstagram! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I’ve said this often that I love Kristin Hannah’s writing. I’ve read several of her books now and this book is In my top 3 favorites of hers. I loved how she told the story of how 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛 were treated during the Vietnam War through Frankie’s story. Frankie was a nurse who cared for those soldiers injured and/or killed in battled. It was wild to read how they were treated as though they didn’t even exist over there, even by family. Frankie’s story was wild to read and left me in disbelief as I read it. Not only do we get her war time story, we also get her love stories, pretty much her from young woman to middle age adulthood. If you have not read this one, or an KH book, here is your invitation to start here with this amazing book! I’m sure you’ll want to go down her backlist afterwards! Right book, wrong time. What Are You Going Through is beautifully written, resonant, and reflective, but equally dark and depressing. It was clearly the wrong time for me to pick up this much-loved work by Nunez. There’s no doubt that death is an important part of life, as it’s inevitable; nobody is spared. However, I felt that this book focused more on death than life, and the element of ‘what people go through’ was slightly lost on me. In essence, it’s a story about the narrator and her terminally ill friend who has decided to not suffer and leave the world on her own terms. When the chapters focused on the friends and their conversations, I was fully invested. The other bits felt a tad disjointed, and I didn’t care for them. Honestly, I’m still trying to figure out my thoughts on the book. I loved some parts as they were resonant and wrapped with a layer of humor, albeit dark. And there were some bits that made me squirm with discomfort. Taking long breaks between reading sessions also didn’t help me much. I reckon perhaps this is a book that is meant to be read and absorbed in one sitting, letting it simmer in your mind for a few days. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the right headspace to do so. 🐍 Book Review 🐍 Misborn: The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson 🅵🅰🆅 🅲🅷🅰🆁🅰🅲🆃🅴🆁🆂: Vin, Elend 🅵🅰🆅 🆀🆄🅾🆃🅴🆂: Faith means that it doesn't matter what happens. You can trust that somebody is watching. Trust that somebody will make it all right. “Elend started. "Vin!" Then, he smiled. "What took you so long?" "I got delayed by an Inquisitor and a dark god," she said. "Now hustle.” 🅼🆈 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂: One sentence to sum up this book for me was that it was the perfect ending to the perfect setup for the Cosmere. This book again drilled it in us that every little detail matters, EVERY. LITTLE. DETAIL. Many moments in the book had me screaming out loud (not outward, inside my mind). Those who had reservations about this book after reading The Well of Ascension don’t need to worry, it is worth it to reach the end of this book. The action is as always great, even if you don’t like the writing of Brandon, you cannot say you don’t like those action sequences. This book’s epilogue made me cry, it wasn’t the sad kind of cry but a sweet sad kind of cry and after reading Mistborn Secret History it just makes me that much more teary eye. And as I listened to The Sanderlanche podcast as I read through the book, it made me love predicting things more. Some of my predictions were right but some were just outright wrong 😝. 👑Glory and Power: Elizabeth and the Rebirth of Royalty by Alexander Larman 🫶🏻Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press, for my free book for review. 📌📆Coming Soon! April 30, 2024 📖Book Thoughts: “Glory and Power: Elizabeth and the Rebirth of Royalty” by Alexander Larman is truly exceptional. The storytelling-like narration drew me in, making it a remarkable read. Two aspects that particularly stood out were the relationship between King George VI and his brother, the Duke of Windsor, and the special bond between King George VI and his daughter, Princess Elizabeth. The book provides a comprehensive insight into the customs, politics, and crisis during the post-war era. It highlights the profound impact on the family and the country following the loss of the King. However, the book ends on a positive note, shedding light on the marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, as well as the ascension of the princess to the throne. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the royal family and English history. ❓Any upcoming release this week that you’re looking forward to? #biography #arcreader #bookthoughts #newbookreleases

📚BOOK REVIEW📚 Love You, Mean It by Jilly Gagnon Thank you @penguinrandomhouse and @netgalley for the gifted copy! Pub date is tomorrow 04/30. 📖 Synopsis in comments Romance books are not my go-to. There are a couple of authors that I will read in this genre, but they are few. There was a lot to love about Love You, Mean It. I enjoyed the small town charm. It had all the hallmark-esq, feel-good vibes without all the cheesy-ness. Well, there was some cheese as MC Ellie was a deli owner, but none that made me roll my eyes. The banter was on point, and I loved the side characters. It was refreshing to see women supporting women, especially with Sam's character. She could have been written in an unflattering way, but you end up rooting for her even when it's not necessarily what you want. My main issue with the book and the majority of romance books in general is that it was open door and graphic in nature. It's just a personal preference. I honestly wish these things were disclosed up front so that you could make a decision about whether you wanted to start a book or not. Had I known, I probably would have passed on this book. It didn't come into play until about halfway through, and by that time, I was invested in the fake dating between Ellie and Theo. The writing was well done aside from the foul language that was not needed and I would love to read more by Jilly Gagnon if things could be a little less explicit but I understand that I am not the intended audience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 #bookreview #bookthoughts #bookstagram #romcombooks #aprilreads #randomhouse #netgalley #loveyoumeanit #jillygagnon

✿𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓣𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓼✿ For the month of April, @indiespinesbookclub read: The Fine Print by Lauren Asher My Rating: ☆☆☆☆.5 Swipe ⬅️ for book description. 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: This one was the grumpiest of grumpy sunshines that I have ever read. Rowan, our billionaire brother was standoffish, gruff, and a man of many harsh words. Zahra, gave it right back to him though. That’s one thing that I enjoyed about this Billionaire romance. The banter between these two was so entertaining. For me, it was a bit of a slow burn as it took about 20% for me to really get into it and the reason for me knocking 1/2 a star off. But, once I did get into it, I loved it. This crazy, quick romance gave us the story behind both of our main characters. We were given the reasoning behind Rowan’s grumpy demeaner and was able to see Zahra chip away some of that wall he had built. Zahra, had something to prove in the new position she was given and was able to show that she belonged in the position she was placed in. And… can we talk about the steam? This one checked that spicy meter as well. So you can say it hit on all points that I look for in my romance novels - a good plot that made sense, chemistry, banter, and spice. The story centered around Dreamland, a theme park owned by Rowan’s family. Him and his brothers are tasked to earn their inheritance and 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑡 is about one of 3 brothers, Rowan, and Zahra. I enjoyed this one so much, I immediately bought books 2 and 3. I am looking forward to reading the next book about the second Billionaire brother, Declan next! ✿𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬? BOOK THOUGHTS ON WICKED IS THE REAPER BY NISHA J. TULI This is a beauty and the beast retelling and its novella length. I thought the book flowed really well and it was a decent retelling. I liked this book, but not love. I wasn’t overlly fond on the main characters Roman was lacking in personality, and character. Wicked was alright again nothing special. I think if the book was longer and you were able to get some depth to the characters and more plot it would have been great it had a great base just couldn’t be developed in a novella. QOTD: Do you like Novellas? Answer: I like Novellas as prequels where they are either setting the scene such as “The sword or the Seceptor” by Jbree leading in to the main books in the series or as prequels where they add an additional POV to the story. 🏷️ #currentlyreading #bookstagramer #booksbooksbooks #reading #bookreading #audible #audiobooks #fantasy #enemiestolovers #moodreader #bookstagram #bookthoughts #bookreviews #bookrecommendations

Night Circus by Erin Morgenshtern quick review 🎪: The book is 3/5 for me. It has very strong builded world and it was fascinating to read the magic explanation and the circus vibes are magical, but overall the book didn’t have something to capture me completely. I stopped reading in the middle and couldn’t make myself to finish. I think the author spent too much energy on world descriptions and a bit forget about characters development. And the love line, which is almost the main subject kinda lacking of emotions for me. I wanted more of drama I guess (?!) But I recommend to try it out just at least for the vibe! I can compare it to “Caraval” by Stephanie Garber, but much more well written. #bookthoughts #bookrecs #bookrecsofinstagram #bookcontent #bookishpost #bookishposts #bookishgirl #bookgirl #bookreviews #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewblog #bookreading #bookscommunity #booksclub

Athelstan by Tom Holland (P. 117) . I have a fondness for this particular past. Where the are large swathes of the past unknown to us. We survive on the fragments that come down to us by chance, or through the eyes of later generations. There’s no certainty and in a world where you can find out for certain about a range of things it’s refreshing to piece together what remains. . This is a fascinating read of a king who largely remains shrouded in time, despite his achievements at the time that still have a bearing on today. . Being so far away from home I found this book strangely moving. I pictured the green rolling hills. The bucolic hedgerows of an England of my imagination and nostalgia. The history that remains under us. The history that will remain hidden. . This is a short, and almost ethereal read. A read that I really enjoyed. . #tomholland #athelstan #englishhistory #books #bookstagram #nf #historybooks #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #bookvibes #bookaddict #bookworm #bookrecommendations #bookreader #bookblogger #bookblog #whattoread #bookishlove #bookishpost #bookwriting #literaturelovers #bookthoughts

𝚂𝚠𝚒𝚏𝚝 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚂𝚊𝚍𝚍𝚕𝚎𝚍 ~ 𝙱𝚢 𝙻𝚢𝚕𝚊 𝚂𝚊𝚐𝚎 𝙱𝚘𝚘𝚔 𝟸 𝚒𝚗 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚁𝚎𝚋𝚎𝚕 𝙱𝚕𝚞𝚎 𝚂𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚜 I was so excited to read the second book of the Rebel Blue series after devouring the first one. We meet back up with the fabulous characters. Seeing more of Emmy and Luke and even got a little more insight to Teddy and Gus, which I loved. I adore every single one of the characters and their complexities, their relatableness, and their love and loyalty to one another.   The start of the story was perfect. Imagine having the hottest kiss, of your life, in the shadows of the dingy bar. And then finding out its your new boss – loved it!   “Weston Ryder was a hot, age appropriate, and seemingly kind cowboy – not the weather-beaten old rancher id been imagining. And I’d kissed him.”   Wes was just the perfect ‘nice guy’. Caring, gentle, patient, and pure ‘sunshine’. A handsome cowboy who had me “swooning”. Ada was the opposite. Aloof and grumpy. But at the same time, intelligent, sassy, and independent. I think they both balanced each other out perfectly. I love the way LS writes and how the characters relationships progress naturally. It feels genuine and not at all cringey. I loved the reverse-grumpy element as well.   “He was like the sun. No matter what, he would keep coming up”   Wes teaching Ada to drive a manual truck was just everything 🥰   “You don’t have to feel trapped like that again” Shout out to Amos. I think there always needs to be a patriarch/matriarch of the family that everyone loves and trusts. Nothing got by Amos, and I loved his fierce love of his kids and how he would open his home and his arms to anyone that needed it.   ❣️ DUAL POV ❣️ SMALL TOWN ❣️ FORCED PROXIMITY ❣️ HE FALLS FIRST ❣️ FOUND FAMILY ❣️ CITY GIRL X COUNTRY BOY ❣️ MENTAL HEALTH REP ❣️ REVERSE GRUMPY – SUNSHINE ❣️ OPPOSITES ATTRACT ❣️ SPICY ❣️ BANTER   ‘You’re the moon”, he said. “And I’m the tides. You pull me in without even trying, and I come to you willingly. I always will.” – Weston   This story is full of giggles, banter, and a whole lot of heart. Perfect if you love a heartfelt romance with a strong sense of place and family.

💙 BLUE MONDAY REVIEW 💙 @womensprize shortlist - book 1 I spent this weekend immersed in an unnamed woman’s experience of early motherhood thanks to Claire Kilroy’s incredible Soldier Sailor. Although a fairly short book the impact is not lessened in any way. This book left a visceral impression and I was transported back to the anxiety, isolation, confusion and overwhelm of those early months and years. Very much a feminist exploration of the experience of motherhood, the husband in this book is utterly useless and I was left furious with him at several points. But there is balance as ‘the friend’ is portrayed as a fantastic father - this is not a book which simply rubbishes men in order to explore the experience of women. “A new mother is not peaceful but in a jittery state of high alert. We declare her serene so we can leave her to it. So we can behold the glittering surface, remark on its beauty, and walk away”. I loved this book and consider it a fantastic start to my Women’s Prize reading this year. I have five more of the shortlist to get through before the winner is announced on 12 June but Soldier Sailor is an auspicious start. I look forward to the rest of my reading. Book Review: Finding Margaret Fuller ⭐️⭐️ This was an absolute miss for me. I should share that I am not a big transcendentalist fan - Thoreau, Emerson and Whitman have always irked me a bit. This book is historical fiction around Margaret Fuller who did a lot of amazing things as well as being a contemporary and sympathizer of these poets and authors. Reading the summary of her life I can see why the author wanted to write this book. But it felt so incredibly tedious. It is also more evidence that the authors of this time all living in Concord were just self-important jerks. This book has received so much acclaim and I really wish I had liked it more. It just didn’t have anything that connected me to the characters- even Louisa May Alcott feel flat for me. Has anyone else read this? Did you like it? What am I missing?

📖Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale📖 So this book was really strange for me. I absolutely tore through the first half. I thought the character of Cassandra was fantastic, I loved the time travel element and seeing how she was adjusting to that, it was really intriguing and I was so interested to keep going and find out what was going to happen. And then……it was like somewhere around the halfway mark the story just became incredibly tedious to me. The pacing slowed down immensely, it felt like there were too many elements trying to be shoved into one story, and things just kind of fell apart. I also just really didn’t like the ending so, that’s kind of a big thing. There’s some really great elements to this story and a lot I liked about it. I think, regardless of the pacing issues, there’s still a really valuable story of self acceptance in this book that is worth the read. #bookreview #bookclubpicks #reesesbookclub #cassandrainreverse #bookrecommendations #bookthoughts #bookstagram #libbyapp #loveyourlibrary #whatimreading #currentlyreading #momswhoread #aprilreads

A too-good-to-be-true Italian Airbnb in a weird little village, a dysfunctional family vacation, and an angry ghost. All together that’s Diavola. The real horror is this terrible family. They are 100% drama all the time. About halfway through this book I had to take a break from them all. Aside from these awful people, this was a fun spooky read with a satisfying ending. I do like a “I Went on Vacation and All I Got Was This Lousy Ghost” book. #diavolajenniferthorne #spookybooks #audiobookstagram #bookstagram #bookthoughts

✿𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓣𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓼✿ 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐢 by Sabina Khan Rating: ☆☆☆☆ Swipe ⬅️ for book description. 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Meet me in Mumbai was such a moving story about Ayesha and the choices she’s forced to make when she finds herself in a very difficult position. At such a young age she makes a life changing decision for her and her unborn child. I loved that we were given both POVs, Ayesha (birth mom) and Mira (adopted daughter) to gain both perspectives. Starting with Ayesha we see the family and cultural dynamic and how she feels about her family, Suresh (her babies father) and other friendships. Once we move to Mira’s POV, we are given a glimpse of how the effects of her life was being Indian and adopted by white parents. That played a role in her longing to know her culture and how some treated her when they saw their family dynamic. I loved that she had a best friend whose family was also Indian and shows her aspects of her heritage and embraced her. Once Mira found letters from her birth mom, I loved that she eventually voiced her longing to know, but also explained that it wasn’t anything against her mom’s. I appreciated the final parts of the book because we were given a resolution to their story. I do feel it was pretty quick. I personally would have liked just a bit more from the ending, but it did not take away from the overall wrap up, or feel incomplete. Thank you to @shhhimmarieding for buddy reading this one with me! ✿𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐲 (𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲)? #meetmeinmumbai #bookthoughts #20booksbyasianauthors #readreviewrepeat #booksbooksbooks #bookthoughts #booksandthemes2024

A book I just finished: The Vanishing Girls by Callie Browning A serial killer thriller set in 1985 Barbados, with a heavy dose of romance in the morgue. Vanishing Girls introduces us to Eileen with a mysterious past who answers a newspaper classified ad looking for an assistant at a local morgue. There she meets Holden, the handsome man who inherited the morgue from his dad. He's struggling to keep the business afloat, and desperate to maintain the morgue in his dad's memory. Quickly the pair are thrown together in a bid to find the killer of several young women whose mutilated bodies have been found dumped in cane fields. I had a couple issues with this book but overall it was a pretty good reading experience. The plot and characters could have been given more room to develop. What I did like: - The Clifford character - The historical references and glimpses into 1985 Barbados - Got some insight into how deaths and funeral business work - The book depicted Barbados in a pretty dark and murky way that contradicts the sunny island vibes: lots of midnight settings, the dark, muddy canefields, the seedy side of town, the economic struggles of 1985. What didn't work for me: - The ending and the killer reveal. Too rushed and made little to no sense. - The romance sublot. Too rushed and made little to no sense. - There were inconsistencies in the character development. Eileen starts out as a plucky go-getter, and then by the end of the book she's the damsel in distress. - Again, I think the main plot needed more time to be developed. The timeline skips were jarring at times and made the plot progression clunky. SPOILER HERE . . . . . . . . . . . . . Did the killer really have to be the guy in drag??? The reveal of the killer felt really lazy and almost an after thought. It made zero sense. I think it would have worked better if the killer was revealed to be someone we as the readers actually grew to know. Not a character who "died" like 30% into the book. . . . . . . Would I recommend The Vanishing Girls? Definitely. It's a good book club pick. I'm interested in what else Browning has to offer us. I think it's a pretty good book for a self-published work.

💀𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐨 🎲⁣ ⁣ I recently got caught up with the 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘋𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘯 series. This series is just so fun. It’s silly, it’s lighthearted and wildly entertaining. If you enjoy cozy mysteries sure to make you laugh you should definitely pick up this series. ⁣ ⁣ Going to do some quick mini reviews of the ones I recently binged.⁣ ⁣ 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐧 (Book 3) - Finlay and Vero at a citizen’s police academy can only mean mayhem & we sure get that here. Nick takes a big role in this book which I loved and we get Julian Baker too for a bit of fun. I could not be more intrigued by Mrs. Haggerty, the elderly neighbor. She’s definitely a character to watch and I’m looking forward to more of her story. This one ends in a cliffhanger that had me ready to jump into book 4! ⁣ ⁣ 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐑𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 (Book 3.5/novella) - I enjoyed getting some insight into Vero’s backstory and how her & Finlay meet. This was a perfect set-up for understanding the underlying Vero storyline in book 4. Not to be missed if you’re reading this series. ⁣ ⁣ 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐞 (Book 4) - The most hilarious family trip to Vegas with two rambunctious kids, one meddlesome mother and a nosey ex-husband. Finlay and Vero are on the run from loan sharks, looking for a stolen car and Vero’s missing friend Javi. Add in some unplanned police presence by Vero’s sister, Georgia and hot cop Nick plus throw in a dead body they have to keep hidden and this makes for one hell of a girls trip for Finlay & Vero. And with the final page…. I have high hopes for book 5!⁣ ⁣ ❓𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘻𝘺 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴? ⁣ #finlaydonovan #cozymysteryseries #cozymystery #seriessunday #bookseries #serieslover #ellecosimano #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookishthoughts #bookthoughts #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #readercommunity #readingcommunity #bookcommunity #bookwormsofinstagram #readreadread

⭐️ Book Review ⭐️ This was a sluggish read- not in a boring way, just more of a slow paced/easy fictional drama. The story focuses on character development as a main theme and as the story progresses, you learn how much of a façade each is putting on and the reasons for this. The rose tinted superficiality of the characters’ lives is slowly exposed via the flashbacks to the past. I felt the ‘big secret’ was pretty weak and wasn’t a big enough event to be used as a focal point for the book; if it was just a part of the storyline then it may have worked better. The group dynamics were possibly the best part of this and made it an interesting read from a social POV; I think this would make a good book club read for that reason, as there’s a lot to be said. I saw on Good reads that people were disappointed with the ending. Understatement really as it doesn’t have an ending- it just stops. It also stops with several storylines left open, which was quite annoying…not sure what that was about but maybe the author had dinner plans or something 🤷‍♀️ #bookreviewtime #bookthoughts #readandreview #bookreview #fictionlover #fictionfans #fictionbooks #bookworm #booklover #addictedtobooks #literaryreview

📚Book review: Pestilence by Laura Thalassa. Book 1 of The four horsemen. 👑 Key words: The four horsemen, Pestilence, apocalyptic, death and chaos, deadly fever/plague, assassination attempts, moral crises, existential crises, inner battles, slow burn, humanity, some spice. I'll start by honestly saying that I didn't see myself enjoying this as thoroughly as I did. That being said, I think it is enjoyable if one puts aside logical questions and curiosities and remembers this is a fictional world. I also low-key feel like this was one of those "It doesn't have to be a good book to be a good read" scenarios. I devoured this book. Which is so wonderful to me because I haven't properly devoured anything in weeks and I was missing that feeling. That being said, I can't even properly articulate what it is about this book that had a chokehold on me. The idea really intrigued me, because I am fascinated in stories around the four horsemen but haven't found any yet that I really enjoyed. I will admit that the plot itself does feel weaker and I remember thinking it was moving slow, but at the same time I loved it? It was more character driven as we watched the inner battles both Pestilence and Sara faced sprinkled around the romantasy elements. I loved that this book was a little spicy but the spice was so... Loving. It was emotional and a constant push/pull (see inner battles previously mentioned) and it was just lovely. I did just want even more character depth though. The downside is with stories like this about the horsemen, obviously there's also a lot of death and chaos, so don't expect that to ever rationally make sense. Overall, I just intensely loved this. I enjoyed the witty sarcasm weaved into the narrative and want to read more by this author. 🙌🏻 Image description in alt text 📚 #pestilence #fourhorsemen #apocolypse #bookreview #bookrecommendation #romantasy #bookthoughts #bookseries #bingeablebook #booklover #justread

📚Book review: The stranger in the lifeboat by Mitch Albom 🛶 Three days after finding their way into a life raft when the yacht they were on exploded, the ten survivors found a man floating in the ocean. When they pulled him aboard, he revealed "I am the lord". Low on food, water, and hope for survival, this story goes back and forth between perspectives of a man on the land and a man at the sea. With that of the sea being told through notebook entries that one of the survivors wrote on the raft, trying to live, and that of the land being about a man who found the notebook when the raft washed up. --- To preface this, I have read other of Mitch Albom 's books and even though he is no stranger to exploring religion concepts, I always felt some of his other books could be interpreted through a wider spiritual lens and not just a specific religious one. This one, not so much. I grew up Catholic and then left that religion and was atheist for many years until I found spirituality, but this felt very specific to one religion. It is possible to expand the interpretation but eh. This one just was a miss for me. Interestingly enough it also made me wildly uncomfortable reading about people trying to survive on a life raft in the ocean and made me face that the ocean is one of my biggest fears so now I have a theory that perhaps I died in a past life in the ocean. 🫣 Regardless, this was a fast paced read. To those who believe in God deeply, this will be a hit for sure. I do appreciate the messaging to believe in something outside of yourself whatever that may be though. It wasn't a bad read, it does tug on the heart though too so be mindful of that. ♥️ Image description in alt text📚 #mitchalbom #bookreview #spiritualbook #bookreader #bookworm #booklover #bookthoughts #bookphoto #bookshelf #reader #justread

Finally, a second book for April 🌷 I decided to change around the aesthetics of my posts. Chain of Gold | Cassandra Clare Book # 15 of 2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ✨ Book Thoughts ✨ This year so far has been reading the Shadowhunter universe. The Last Hours trilogy is next before the Mortal Instruments series. Chain of Gold follows Cordelia Carstairs and James Herondale with their friends. I love Cordelia and her sense of strength. I’m not a fan of Grace. The common theme of love triangles and length of book is where I struggled. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ALL the stars and love for this book and I couldn’t have read this in a better place! I’m so happy I grabbed this from the bookstore right before my trip to St. Maarten this past week! I devoured most of this book on the plane and then finished it on the beautiful beach! It made me laugh and tear up and gosh how I really grew to love Daphne and Miles so much!! I love the way Daphne talked about books as she was a children’s librarian. And I loved the setting of this one in Waning Bay, Michigan! I have not read an Emily Henry book that I didn’t like, but this one definitely ranks at the top with People We Meet on Vacation and Happy Place! If you have read this book, come tell me your thoughts! ✨ So many great reads that I now stuck waiting for the next volume to come out😅 Each title that isn’t out yet has the publication date above it, and as always 🌈 = LGBTQ+ rep! Below you can find my quick summaries 🙃 ✨SubZero Vol.1: Feuding dragon kingdoms, arranged marriage to end war, secrets, gorgeous illustrations. ✨Covenant Vol.1: Exorcists battle an uptick in demon activity while two sectors battle each other, very cool illustrations. ✨The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn: perfectly titled, simple but enjoyable illustrations, hard to explain other than different and fun! ✨I Felt Myself Slipping: Deaf representation, including the ASL alphabet which I appreciate. Gymnast team with a new member, trauma, friendship, never giving up. Simple illustration that reminds me of Heartstopper. ✨Navigating with You: CP representation. Two girls new to school, forced proximity equals friendship equals romance. Working through identity and trauma. I really enjoyed it and its simple illustrations. ✨Number Call: Simple illustration, high school boys with similar names lead to romance. ✨Crave: An app helps you get what you want but at what cost? Private school, a group comes together to take down the app. Leading to a second book. Adult imagery at times including BDSM. ✨Morgana and Oz: Witch/Vampire clan fued, negotiations go wrong, young witch spell goes wrong. While trying to reverse said spell she stumbles onto a witch cottage. ✨Pride Seek & Find: a queer Where’s Waldo while learning about the community & its history!

Finished reading this last night, & this really has all the things I enjoy in a magical siblings story. There's a lot of different representation among the siblings, which I appreciated: fattness, various queer identities, trans & nonbinary, one sister is deaf & all the siblings are shown to know sign language & use it (rather than having it "solved" with magic). (There's also some representation in regards to race, some of the siblings are Black & Hispanic, but honestly everyone's physical appearances in that way comes up the least, & I'm not a reader who is able to picture people really in my head, so I couldn't tell you which siblings they were.) I also want to note that in chapter 4, in a conversation between characters about what might be hiding in the woods, there is a very brief discussion of an Indigenous creature (I'm pretty sure it's one you're not supposed to even say the name of, so thats why I'm not. I could be misremembering, but I'd rather be cautious in order to be respectful). I'd seen a comment once a while ago about this book using Indigenous stories, so I was waiting for it to appear. From my understanding of the story, outside of this discussion (& a reference to it a few chapters later), that's all it is in the story. The main "monster" of the forest isn't ever explicitly named, but I don't think it's supposed to be this Indigenous creature. Which on one hand, I was relieved because non-Indigenous writers should not be using Indigenous beliefs & stories to create monsters; however, why even mention it at all? It serves no purpose, has no bearing on the plot, & is (most likely) something from a community the writer doesn't belong to. I'm hopeful that the author has learned from this (this was her debut) & am looking forward to checking out her other books, but I completely understand if this keeps you from picking up the book. I'm in no position to make a recommendation on what you do with this info--please listen to Indigenous readers instead--but wanted to share it so you could be informed. Yesterday was such a cool experience! Sally Hepworth is an auto-read author for me and she is one I go to when I’m in the mood for a good domestic suspense. Yesterday I had the pleasure of working an event for her newest release, Darling Girls. This book kept me guessing until the very end and was a little more thrillery (is that a word? If not, I’m making it one.) I also recommend: The Mother-In-Law and The Good Sister

🩷💙💛🩵 Emily Henry appreciation post 🩷💙💛🩵 She is just an incredible author with such an impressive catalog of books. I first read People We Meet on Vacation back in 2021 then I was first getting back into reading. To be honest I gave it 3 stars then but I don't really remember much about the story so may be due for a re-read But then I read Book Lovers and fell in love! I made one of my first reviews on Goodreads because I had to declare I had finally found a romance novel worth 5 stars to me. Happy Place was so different but so real and raw and I loved it for that. I just finished Funny Story last night and to be honest I'm still trying to work out my feelings on this one - full review to come! And the good news is I still haven't read Beach Read yet so I don't have to wait forever for EmHen to grace us with a new book and I plan on reading it this summer and really looking forward to it!! 💬💬 What's your Emily Henry rankings?? 💬💬 What's your favorite thing about her books? #emilyhenry #emilyhenrywrites #funnystory #happyplace #booklovers #beachread #peoplewemeetonvacation #bookthoughts #bookrecommendations #romancereader #bookstagram #books #romancebooks

May I present to you… My new favorited Em Hen book order! I will post my full review of Funny Story tomorrow, so stay tuned for full thoughts why it did not overtake Happy Place for second place—but it was real close. Since everyone has been talking Em Hen, I’ve read a few comments that make me want to reread Beach Read and see if my order changes. It’s been so chaotic being on vacation, I feel like I’ve spent no time here and I totally ruined my page aesthetic to share vaca photos! That’s gonna bother me every time I look at my grid, but I couldn’t take the time to do better in the moment. Back to our regularly scheduled bookish program and back to page aesthetic. I’ve also read the entire 5 book Magnolia Parks series and haven’t written a single review yet. I don’t even know if I can individually or just lump them together. We’ll see! Happy Sunday 🤍 #bookstagram #books #emilyhenry #bookthoughts

It might be dumb to say this, but I’m proud that I’m on my 250th read, and we’re just at the end of April since books have been a need, not only a want, hence why I freaked out when Microsoft Edge stopped working. By the way, it’s still not working. Later on today, I will check with Microsoft accessible help desk and see if they can help me or if they have any updates on the issue. I started Tumble by Celia C. Pérez, and the author is the same one who wrote The First Rule of Punk, which was my favourite middle during the pandemic, which was a time when we had to adopt life and loss. I love how the author deals with hard-hitting topics, which aren’t easy to do, especially in middle grade. I think this post will be mainly named Kate O’Keeffe because the last two novels I read were by her, and it’s rare that she gets anything less than four stars from me. Her characters read like everyone people, and without knowing, you will take thoughts with you by the end of the novel. In Never Fall for Your Enemy, we get to see Kennedy as the main character; at last, we have seen her in a few books now, but she lucked out in love. Moving to the UK from America, she thought she no longer had to worry about her enemy, Charles Cavendish. I wish we had seen their past from Charles’s point of view, too, since something in the situation was missing. #bookthoughtsbyk💭 a court of thorns and roses sarah j maas i kinda knew what i was getting into when i started this book. i have read a handful of fantasy books growing up but i haven’t tried this genre with a little kick (🌶️) in it, iykwim haha. the whispers were true tho about how the story starts out slow but if you’ll hang on, you will see how Feyre turned from a mere survivor of her punishment to a force not to be messed with. the love, passion and loyalty between her and Tamlin brought out the twists and turns on the plot. i’m kinda excited also about the intrigues and spunk Rhysand brought and what it does to Feyre and Tamlin. overall, this was a breath of fresh air to me as I seldom read fantasy series. should i jump to the second book already? ♡♡♡♡✖ in case you’re wondering, my review/rant is covered on my journal since i write in bisaya language so i can spill all my uncensored thoughts. hahaha! hello davao pips! #bookreview #bookstagram #acourtofthornsandroses #acotar #sarahjmaas #tamlin #feyre #bookthoughts #reading #booktok

BOOK THOUGHTS ON AN HEIR COME TO RISE I really enjoyed this book, I thought it had such a great plot, World building and magical system. It’s plot driven but has a slow burn enemies to lovers romance. I do wish there was more spice I feel like it needed it to be a 5 star read. I loved the characters and loved the found family aspect of the book. The concepts of grief and loss are present in this book and are well done, I really loved when Faythe is able to use her ability to relive her moments with her mother - I felt a little broken in this part in the best ways. I loved the concept of the nighwalkets and that aspect of power they have. I love how Faythe has something more than the rest and I love that she is willing to give everything up for her friends. I loved the side characters Jak and Marlowe. I would also like more from Niks POV there were a few chapters from his POV but I think we could have had more. Now I had a lot of ideas about where the book was going but somehow I did not see the reveal at the end coming. I can’t wait to see how the story progresses. 🏷️ #currentlyreading #bookstagramer #booksbooksbooks #reading #bookreading #audible #audiobooks #fantasy #enemiestolovers #moodreader #bookstagram #bookthoughts #bookreviews #bookrecommendations

Herman Melville and I agree on one thing — the best time of the year to read tales of shipwreck is “a boisterous March night, with … the chimney-stacks blowing down upon the pavement, bubbling with rain-drops”. If you are of a similar mind, make yourself a cup of coffee and get your hands on David Grann’s account of The Wager. Filled to the brim with peril, death, mutiny, and a naval cover-up — Grann’s assiduously researched account is so engrossing it reads like a work of fiction. This is the perfect book to hunker down with this winter, friends. Plenty of provisions to keep you satiated while reading are recommended.

Update on the #taylorswiftreadingchallenge ! I finished my Lover Era book on April 21. For Lover the challenge was to read a comfort romance, or a novel with pink on the cover. I chose A Fragile Enchantment, by Allison Saft because it covers both of these! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Niamh (Neeve) is a Machlish girl (basically the regency era Ireland) who has magic, or divine, blood. This magic presents as an affinity for imbuing emotions into the items that she sews and tailors. This has given her widespread recognition as a tailor, so naturally she is selected to journey to Avaland (basically regency era England) to make the wedding garments for the upcoming royal wedding. Niamh is often selfless, overworking herself and her magic. She also has a chronic illness. This was an interesting magic system in general, but I wish it had been explored more. Once in the palace Niamh meets the Prince Regent Jack Carmine, Prince Christopher (Kit) Carmine, Princess Sofia, and Sinclair. Kit is a classic grumpy boy. He is a troubled soul, haunted by things that happened when he was younger. He doesn't want his emotions to show. So of course when he tries on something that Niamh makes and it makes him feel something, he gets mad. After that Niamh is determined to make him like her work, so there is more and more interaction. This is where we also tie in Sinclair, Princessa Rosa (Kit's intended) and Miriam. Both Kit and Rosa have different types of magic as well. There are lots of cute moments between this group as they become friends and talk with one another. The romance was adorable, and there are some great LGBTQ characters. The political turmoil and the question of the identity of the writer called Lovelace added depth and excitement to the plot. It definitely reminded me of Bridgerton, just not as steamy. *Full review is on Goodreads and Storygraph, via CeruleanHeather * #taylorswifteras #taylorswifterasreadingchallenge #taylorswiftreadingchallenge #readingchallenge #loverera #romance #regencyromance #fantasyromance #booklover #bookthoughts #bookreview #afragileenchantmenr #allisonsaft #bookstagram #ceruleanheather

It’s #CanadianIndependentBookStoreDay, so naturally I headed down to @bookcityto this afternoon, both to support my local independent and to finally pick up two books that I’ve had my eye on for ages. Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet has been one of my reading highlights of the past decade, so I’m surprised it’s taken me until now to get hold of ‘Companion Piece’, whereas Coco Mellor’s debut just sounds like a cracking good read based on everything I’ve heard.

Just finished "The Hemlock Queen" by Hannah Whitten. Let's break it down: 🌟 Power struggles are hotter than dragon fire! Lore's grappling with death, Bastian's transforming, and I'm hooked. 🌟 Divine drama alert! The gods' backstory adds depth to the narrative—I'm living for every celestial twist! 🌟 Gabe's is not around as much as book one, and I miss him. More in book 3, please! 🌟 Pacing's like a marathon with a slow start, but fear not! The second half's a ride worth every step. 🌟 Mixed feelings about the why-choose dynamic, but Whitten nails it by intertwining it with Lore's journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Overall, "The Hemlock Queen" is a solid read, just like the "The Foxglove King. My prediction is that this trilogy as a whole is one worth diving into. Can't wait for book three! #bookreview #bookstagram #lastread #thenightshadecrown #bookrecs #darkfantasy #fantasyseries #bookthoughts

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5 The stars are for how well the story is written, not for the story itself. Because it's really hard to read and give a star rating to a person's life. Wow. She went through so much. So much of her story made me sad or angry for her. I'm glad she's healing now. And I'm happy for her that she got to tell her story. Made me see some things completely different. And after reading this book, I understand all the hate that Justin Timberlake got. This is the very first time I've ever read a non-fiction book. Starting with this one made me want to read others' stories. Hollywood, and sometimes family, can be really messed up. . . . #britneyspears #bookthoughts #nonfiction #memoir #bookpost #bookstagram #bookphotography #bookblog #bookobsessed #fivestarreads

‘Behind The Net’ They knew each other from high school and had a major crush on each other, but they never acted on it. Now, he’s a prominent NHL player, and she becomes his new assistant. 😏 He’s afraid to let her in, so he does what he does best: being a jerk. She’s a distraction he needs to avoid at all costs, but can he maintain the facade? This was a peculiar read. There were parts that I enjoyed, and some that were just cringeworthy. 🫤 I suppose I appreciated the storyline, but not so much the execution. The emotions seemed scattered throughout, and I find it odd how the author chose to present them. I didn’t experience deep emotions while reading this book, and that’s always disappointing. It’s a 2,5/5 for me.⭐️ Love, Charlie . . . . . . #behindthenet #hockeyromance #stephaniearcher #vancouverstorm #sportromance #contemporaryromance #bookreview #romance #highschoolcrush #readingromance #readersofinstagram #hockey #bookishpost #bookthoughts

✨Maus by Art Spiegelman✨ “𝑷𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒖𝒔. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆.” Maus is the extraordinary graphic novel which contains a story within a story: The author spends time with his holocaust survivor dad, documenting his astounding story and dealing with his dad’s idiosyncrasies and eccentricities as he ages. We are presented with the incredible story of Vladek Spiegelman and his time during World War II and at Auschwitz, alongside the story of his relationship with his son (the book’s author) in the present day. I had never heard of Maus before I joined @elaineandthebooks Banned Book Club and I am so grateful to her for making me aware of this unforgettable gem. The Complete Maus is two graphic novels which together present the story of Vladek Spiegelman’s life during World War II. I haven’t read many graphic novels so I’m a bit of a novice, but this story worked so well presented in this way. Spiegelman uses different animal species to portray different groups (e.g. Jewish people are mice and Nazis are cats), and this is such a compelling device. I can imagine this being a powerful and effective way for teens and young adults in particular to consume this history, and I will be buying a copy for my children to read when they’re older. What struck me most, and what will stay with me for a long time, is the unfathomable tale of survival, repeated again and again, and again. Both Spiegelman’s parents, Vladek and Anja, survived not only the extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, but also the Nazi ghetto of Sosnowiec. Maus is an incredible, compelling and important read that I recommend to all. I found it hard to choose just one quote for my review, so I’ll end with another that still makes my heart ache: “𝑵𝒐, 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈! 𝑻𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚... 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒈𝒈𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆!” Do you think graphic novels work well for books set in history?

☀️ Book Review ☀️ Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez Rating: 4.75 ⭐️ Justin feels cursed. Everyone woman he dates finds their soulmate right after they break up. He’s known for this on Reddit, and when a woman, Emma, dm’s him claiming to have the same curse, they decide to date each other hoping that when they breakup, they will find their soulmates and the curse will be broken. This is my first Abby Jimenez book I’ve read, and it definitely lived up to the hype. It felt like I was in one of those Netflix small town series. It had great summer vibes and a super sweet MMC 🥰 (I loved Justin’s little surveys!). I also think Emma made a great FMC. I love how she is so empathetic, but the author does a great job at also showing the potential downsides of this (i.e people taking advantage). I feel like Emma handled so many situations in this book with grace and I loved to see it! This book was such a great balance of cute, quirky romance and emotional real life situations that the characters go through. Justin’s family situation in particular had my mind reeling thinking about what I would do and how I would feel if I was in his position. And the friends of both main characters were AMAZING and I loved to see how important their roles are in supporting Justin and Emma through their situations. Overall, this was a great read and I will be definitely checking out more from this author! Have you read anything from this author? If so, what would you recommend?

Reading The Last Tale of the Flower Bride was like a fever dream and while I definitely did not dislike it, I also didn’t feel any strong connection with it. I’m not sure if that’s because of the flowery prose or because I’m meant to feel that way, as it connects to themes of the book (and there are some dark themes in here). I think I’m still processing, even though I did figure out the reveal pretty early on. If you’ve read Last Tale of the Flower Bride, I’m curious what you thought of it, lmk! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #bookthoughts #gothicbooks #readmorebooks

New book update: I started to read The Familiar by the amazing Leigh Bardugo along with Song of Silver, Flame like night by Amélie Wen Zhao. So far, I love how both stories are unraveling, but they are a bit slow paced at the beginning. But I can see that things are catching up speed. Let’s see what these two stories have to tell me. I’m enjoying both of them.✨ Have you read or are reading any of these two books? 📖🔖

👶 BOOK THOUGHTS I decided to spend March focusing on sci-fi partly because I found this book in the library and realised I have a lot of sci fi on my shelves. If you’ve watched Children of the Damned or that one episode of the Simpsons (“we know all your secrets”), you probably know the plot. Everyone in a small English village is rendered unconscious for a day. When they wake up, all the women are simultaneously pregnant. But the children they give birth to (all blonde, blue eyed, silvery-skinned and maturing faster than they should) seem to have psychic powers. The first half of this book is more engaging than the second. In the first half, Wyndham playfully invokes the parochial, sardonic, Englishness that can be quite funny. He also deals with the social mores of 1950s England, where unmarried women are suddenly pregnant and their only termination choices come through taking very hot baths or taking ill advised cycle rides. (That’s horrifying in itself.) But while the action picks up in the second half, Wyndham increasingly drives the plot via Gordon Zelllaby (perhaps fiction’s greatest windbag) doing exposition dumps for pages at a time. This really dulls the pace and takes away from some of the more arresting details (like outbreaks of violence, or learning that other countries have dealt with their groups of children in more ruthless ways.) When the shocking ending comes, it’s too quick and I was too weary from listening to Zellaby to appreciate the full impact of what I was reading. #bookthoughts #bookreview #bookreccomendation #scificlassic #scificlassics #johnwyndham #midwychcuckoos #childrenofthedamned #scifimasterworks #classicscifi #sciencefiction #classicsciencefiction #whatimresdingnow
