Anna-Eva Bergman comes to NYC ✨ ‘Luminous Lives’ is the biography Norwegian-born Anna-Eva Bergman written by Thomas Schlesser, Director of @fondationhartungbergman and curator of ‘The New School of Paris Through its Pioneering Women (1945-1964)’ currently on view at @perrotin New York, in which the artist’s work is featured prominently! The story of Bergman’s life, told for the first time in this meticulously researched biography, is extraordinary: a Norwegian childhood that was constantly overshadowed by fear; a bohemian and adventurous youth that spanned much of Europe; a career as an illustrator; encounters in Nazi Germany; increasingly severe health problems; three marriages, two of which were to the same man (Bergman’s fellow artist Hans Hartung); and a tragic end in the splendor of their villa in Antibes. More info about the book: - Published by Eris, 2023 - Hardcover, 486 pages - 14.6 x 22 cm | 5.75 x 8.6 in - Text in English with 113 color illustrations throughout - Available at Perrotin Store New York and Paris — @fondationhartungbergman @perrotin #AnnaEvaBergman #NewSchoolofParis #PioneeringWomen #PerrotinNewYork #PerrotinStore #Perrotin

“In infinite extensions.” These words by Herta Wescher, one of Cimaise Magazine’s leading writers, refer to the luminescent effects of Anna-Eva Bergman’s technique.  Cimaise Magazine was an influential French publication devoted to reviewing contemporary art. Many of the periods most important artists and critics graced the pages of these magazines. Female critic Wescher’s words ring true to the aesthetic rhythm of works by fellow woman artists of the New School of Paris, Terry Haass, Geneviève Asse and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva.  Perrotin New York’s ‘The New School of Paris Through Its Pioneering Women (1945-1964)’ chronicles the abstract movement in five distinct chapters, each one demarcated by the words of a prominent female art critic of the time. This retelling of art history seeks to give voice to the forgotten leaders — particularly the women – who were pivotal to the shaping of trends in abstraction after the Second World War. On view at Perrotin New York through May 23.  You can discover more works by Anna-Eva Bergman and Terry Haass at @fondationhartungbergman, both online and at the Foundation’s headquarters in Antibes, France! — @fondationhartungbergman @fondationgandurpourlart #ACA #NewSchoolofParis #PioneeringWomen #PerrotinNewYork #Perrotin  — Portrait of Anna-Eva Bergman, 1929. Esther is having a book birthday! It’s two years since Esther’s Children was published and like most historical fiction, the story still resonates today. It was such a privilege to share her story, based on real events, as well as making sure that she experienced her own great love too 😍 Huge thanks to @annettebarlow and @allenandunwin for believing in the story 🙏🏻 There are links to buy here https://carolinebeecham.com/book/esthers-children/ and if you open the QR code you can access the playlist on Spotify. Enjoy! ‘Caroline Beecham’s command of the historical fiction genre is beyond doubt – Esther’s Children is another story that needed telling, of a remarkable woman who achieved remarkable things and yet is little written about. The book addresses this omission - the story and its execution are luminous.’ Living Arts Canberra   ‘Esther’s Children is a particularly powerful and captivating read that really highlights Caroline Beecham’s great skill as a historical drama author.  Expertly combining intriguing and dark elements of history with a dramatic tale of love, loss and regret…’ The Unseen Library   ‘Beecham’s account of the life of Esther Simpson flows effortlessly from beginning to end. The writing was mesmerizing and honestly, now that I’ve finished, all I want to do is go back and re-read this book again.’ Angela, 5 Star review Goodreads #bookbirthday #reviews #histfic #historicalfiction #estherschildren #esthersimpson #basedonatruestory #refugeestory #lovestory #womeninhistory #pioneeringwomen

What did female art critic Suzanne Tenand mean by her words “painting that has become song again”? The term “lyrical abstraction” has been primarily used to describe the non-figurative experiments that made Myriam Prévot’s Galerie de France so famous in the 1950s and 60s. But Tenand’s “song” is perhaps best illustrated through bringing together works by Zao Wou-Ki, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, and Anna-Eva Bergman, as Prévot did in her gallery. As art historian and curator of the exhibition, Thomas Schlesser explains, “these artists shared a visual language that sought equivalences with the depth of music. This was achieved through vast swathes of color that capture and reflect the light, similar to melodic variations, and through the use of lines and strokes which impart rhythm.” Join us in uncovering the long-forgotten histories of the women gallerists and art critics who shaped the New School of Paris in our exhibition at Perrotin New York. On May 1st it feels appropriate to be celebrating the achievements of Fanny Wilkinson (1855-1951) 🌹 She was the first woman to study landscape architecture at the Crystal Palace School of Landscape Gardening and Practical Horticulture, going onto become the first woman principal of Swanley Horticultural College. She fought to 'put herself on a more business-like footing and to be paid as a professional whilst also doing private work. She said, ‘I certainly do not let myself be underpaid as many women do. There are people who write to me and think because I am a woman I will ask less than a man. This I never do. I know my profession and charge accordingly, as all women should do.’ She was responsible for laying out 75 public gardens for the MPGA over 20 years spanning London from Wandsworth to Plaistow and from Camberwell to Haverstock Hill, the greater number in the East End ameliorating the lives of the poor. She travelled extensively throughout London and its environs looking for potential spaces, landscaping and developing hard surfacing for playgrounds, gymnastic apparatus, sandpits and drinking fountains, surrounded by grass, flower beds, shrubs and trees...she turned numerous disused churchyards into gardens and also laid out gardens for philanthropic organisations such as the Women’s University Settlement, the Women’s School of Medicine and the New Hospital for Women. The first woman landscape gardener in Britain, Fanny Wilkinson was one of a circle of pioneering women social reformers, including Millicent Garrett Fawcett, campaigner for women’s suffrage, her sister Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman doctor in Britain, and cousins, Agnes and Rhoda Garrett, the first women interior decorators. Fanny also worked with Miranda and Octavia Hill developing public gardens for the benefit of the poor, Octavia later being involved in setting up what was to become the National Trust.' Legacy of a Weymouth Woman is the story of Lillian May Henshaw, a resourceful and talented woman, an advocate for education and an early feminist who, perhaps, was just a little bit ahead of her time. Growing up in the shipbuilding community of Weymouth, she had a penchant for stories about the exploits and adventures of the local ships and the men who sailed them. She often wrote about them as a young freelance correspondent for the Halifax Chronicle Herald near the end of the golden era of sail. She was also a creative and astute business woman, who crafted fashionable ladies hats and opened her own millinery and ladies wear shop in Weymouth while still in her teens. In her adult life, while raising five children, she was a persuasive and effective political campaign worker, first for the Progressive Conservatives and later for the CCF (now NDP) as campaign manager for one of the first CCF candidates to run in western Nova Scotia. A strong advocate for education, she endured many hardships and challenges to ensure that her children had access to a high school education. In the 1940s, alone in rural Nova Scotia with three young children, she once shot a menacing moose with a .22 calibre pistol. She was also well known as a “death sitter,” often called upon to sit at bedside with people who were dying. #readatlantic #novascotiahistory #pioneeringwomen #canlit #canadianbookstagram

The mystery of Lydia Conti 🕵️‍♀️ Until recently, virtually nothing was know about the brilliant and audacious woman who ran a small gallery on rue d’Argenson that was at the forefront of the New School of Paris, not even the dates of her birth or death. Through recent research into the movement, it has been discovered that Conti was born Lydie Desclozeaux in Toulon in 1902. She studied political science and was married to Joseph Pugliesi-Conti who came from a large military family. Only one photograph of Conti aged 74 has been recently discovered. We still do not know how or why Conti opened her eponymous gallery at 1 rue d’Argenson, but this small establishment  held several legendary exhibitions, including one for Hans Hartung in February 1947. Conti’s gallery gave countless young people the opportunity to witness the art of the time, including the future Louvre Museum director Michel Laclotte and artist Jacques Villeglé.   Uncover the forgotten history of the women who shaped the movement in ‘The New School of Paris Through Its Pioneering Women (1945 - 1964)’ at Perrotin New York through May 23!  — @fondationhartungbergman @fondationgandurpourlart #ACA #NewSchoolofParis #PioneeringWomen #PerrotinNewYork #Perrotin  — Portrait of Lydia Conti (left), Vallauris, 1978. Meet Madeleine Rousseau, the tenacious character, art historian, curator and critic who introduced Postwar Europe to some of the most revolutionary aesthetics of the time.  Rousseau described the New School of Paris’ radical approach to abstraction as capturing “the spirit of a new order.” “[Rousseau] campaigned for an abstraction that combined human expression, history’s political and social torments, and cosmic truths that govern the universe. […] Hans Hartung, with [his] predominant focus on signs—be it drawn on paper, thrown onto the canvas with a gesture, or scratched into fresh vinyl—were precisely the representatives of what she called ‘revolutionary art.’ For them, abstraction was not just a decorative form but a response to the great questions of civilization, sometimes spontaneous and sometimes more deliberate.” — Thomas Schlesser, curator and Director of the Hartung-Bergman Foundation Discover the New School of Paris through the untold story of the female gallerists and critics who shaped the movement in ‘The New School of Paris Through Its Pioneering Women (1945-1964)’ at Perrotin New York through May 23! — @fondationhartungbergman @fondationgandurpourlart #ACA #NewSchoolofParis #PioneeringWomen #PerrotinNewYork #Perrotin  — Madeleine Rousseau with two friends, in front of the Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1954. ~~~BOOK REVIEW~~~ The Shattered Ceiling is a collection of ten interviews of women excelling in their industry and how their journey was and where they started from. These interviews focus on the women's experience in their personal and professional life while majority are married you will also find women well into their late 40's who chose to remain unmarried. . . These interviews also showcase the struggles these women have faced regarding their health and despite the struggles they managed to reach the top because they strived to keep at it. . . The women range from founders, engineers, working in the development sector and many more industries that you wouldn't have imagined a woman in their day and age to reach but she did. . . While there are many aspects of these women you would be introduced to, there will be some aspects you wouldn't agree with in the interviews and I think that's what is the book's unique quality where it doesn't put the women in one box but rather look at the experience of working for 20-25+ years of how THEY made of it or kept on working inspite the circumstances not working in their favour. . . . This book is a must read for the young generation for both men and women to identify and learn from these stories what can change in their life and apply in their own life for the life they are building and their careers. . . #bookblogger #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booksworthreading #theshatteredceiling #geetmalajalota #nonfiction #pioneeringwomen #bookstagram #interviews #bookish #booksta #delhibookblogger #unitedindianbookstagrammers #indianbloggers #anecdotepublishinghouse

Today, April 4th, we pay tribute to a woman named Mary Jane Colter, an American architect and interior designer whose distinct architectural style was steeped in the imagery, culture, and landscape of the Southwest. Unlike many who have come before and after Mary Jane, this meticulous mind was a staunch champion of Native American artisans and employed them on her project sites, building housing and creative studios for their work and families. As we mark the last day of Women’s History Month, we spotlight an essential student organization in our community, Women in Music Tech. This organization aims to create a community for women and all minorities to network and find support in the academic and professional field of music technology. 🎵💪 This past year, Women in Music Tech has hosted an array of engaging events, each fostering innovation and community. Highlights include a Spooky Sound Synthesis workshop using Arduino, sparking creativity and technical skill; a Music + Tech talk co-hosted as part of the Instrumental Conversations series created by School of Music’s Board and Advisory Council Member, Liz Garner, bringing music industry insight to our students; and an intimate lunch with Annea Lockwood, offering members a rare opportunity to connect with the legendary composer and delve into her creative process. In an interview with Georgia Tech’s campus newspaper, Technique, the student organization’s president, Qianyi Rose Sun, talked about the vision and passion driving Women in Music Tech. Through her words, we’re invited into a world of collaboration, innovation, and mutual support, illustrating the club’s role as a catalyst for change and growth in the field of music technology. In celebration of #womenshistorymonth, we are honoring the female visionaries at the forefront of the New School of Paris movement, but who are notably missing from art history.  Perrotin is thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition ‘The New School of Paris through its Pioneering Women (1945-1964)’ that centers on a cluster of visionary female gallerists and critics who understood and promoted a dynamic group of abstract painters, shepherding a pivotal cultural moment.   At the same time, this exhibition also tells the story of the shift in artistic influence from Paris to New York at the infamous 1964 Venice Biennale. We show how this shift led to the marginalization of these artists, as well as the female critics and gallery owners who had worked tirelessly, both intellectually and socially, for their recognition. Pictured here is artist and critic, Marie Raymond who adeptly characterized this explosive moment in abstraction as “a dream that seems ambitious, inhuman perhaps.”  ‘The New School of Paris through its Pioneering Women (1945-1964)’ opens at Perrotin New York on Saturday, April 13. Join us for a celebration on opening day, more details to come! — @fondationhartungbergman @fondationgandurpourlart #ACA #NewSchoolofParis #PioneeringWomen #PerrotinNewYork #Perrotin  — Marie Raymond in her studio in Paris, 1950. Today, we honor @theresaclaiborne #WomensHistoryMonth. As the first black female Air Force pilot, Theresa Claiborne's legacy soars high! Inspired by her family’s military history and her ROTC experience, Theresa’s journey to the cockpit broke barriers in aviation. She rose to captain before joining @united Airlines in 1990 and later became a captain on Boeing 787 jetliners. She was fortunate to meet her hero of the Tuskegee Airmen, General McGee, and was later awarded the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Aviation Inspiration Award, which recognizes aviators who persevered through adversity and inspired others on their way to becoming pilots and leaders in the aviation industry. Theresa is truly a trailblazer of the skies! Theresa's inspiration extends beyond her role at United as President of @sistersoftheskies. This influential nonprofit aims to develop pathways and partnerships to increase the number of black women in the professional pilot career field through scholarship, mentorship, and outreach. Here, the motto stands, “If they can see it, they can be it!” Like Theresa, @sistersoftheskies paves the way for generations to come. Per aspera ad astra. Watch Theresa as she shares her compelling journey to captain and her continuous efforts to promote greater representation in the aerospace industry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jtJouJTyNw Just as Theresa broke barriers, the @endeavourscholarship team wants to hear from you! For our final post as part of Women's History Month, we wanted to highlight the life and work of Lady Feodora Gleichen MRBS. Lady Feodora Gleichen MRBS (1861-1922), was elected to the Society posthumously in 1922, making her one of the first female members of the Society. Gleichen was the eldest daughter of Admiral Prince Victor of Hohenlohe and a descendent of Queen Victoria. Her father was also a sculptor, and she gained her artistic foundation training in his studio. Her proximity to the Royal family gave her access to many high profile patrons, including Queen Victoria herself. She is also responsible for the Diana/ Huntress fountain in Hyde Park. In 1910 Gleichen was selected by the Windsor National Memorial Committee to erect a statue of the late King Edward VII in front of the hospital at Windsor. #pioneeringwomen #womenshistorymonth

During Women’s History Month at RHD, we proudly celebrate the creativity, dedication, and perseverance of the women who have made a profound impact on our organization, touching the lives of those they support. Sheila Hall-Prioleau's connection with RHD began 21 years ago when she joined the Family House Norristown (FHN) program as a participant, seeking to overcome addiction and find support for herself and her children in 2003. She soon realized how special RHD is, and after graduating from the program, joined the FHN staff in 2004. Nine years later, Sheila started United Peers, RHD’s first peer-run program. The program’s staff of Certified Peer Specialists supports recovery through education and their own lived experiences. Sheila earned her master’s degree in 2013 and is now the Program Director for Creating Increased Connections (CIC) – another peer-run program committed to using the lived experiences of staff to enhance the delivery of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed mental health services. Sheila lives her life through the five key themes of recovery: Hope, Personal Responsibility, Education, Self-Advocacy, and Support. She is a testament to what anyone could achieve when committing to improve their life through skills gained at RHD. “A pioneer is someone who sees future possibilities and works to bring them to reality.”- Beth Keith Question- what do you see? Not just now.. but in the future. That’s how you chart the course for what you should be doing now. Your destination determines the path you take but the path you take determines whether you get to your destination. You need to take the time to dream, imagine and see ahead with God and you also need to wake up to do the work and be disciplined to make the dream a reality. It’s the beautiful blend of creative imagination and right actions that takes you beyond being just a dreamer to being a pioneer. The evidence that you believe the dream is that you wake up to take steps to fulfil the dream. A pioneer is more than a dreamer. You’ve probably heard.. the dream is free.. the hustle is sold separately. #PioneeringWomen #morethanadreamer #dream #livethedream

@gtschoolofmusic As Women’s History Month draws to a close, we believe it’s never too late to celebrate the pioneering women who’ve shaped the landscape of music and music technology—a field where women have historically been underrepresented. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on three trailblazing figures: Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, and Wendy Carlos. 🎶✨ Through our informational graphics, we invite you to delve into the lives and legacies of these remarkable women. Pauline Oliveros, with her philosophy of “deep listening,” transformed our understanding of sound and music. Éliane Radigue’s deep, meditative compositions push the boundaries of electronic music. Wendy Carlos, a true pioneer of synthesizer music, brought classical compositions into the electronic age. 🎧 Their contributions extend far beyond their innovative work; they’ve paved the way for future generations of women in music and music tech, proving that creativity knows no gender. Let’s honor their legacies by continuing to support and amplify the voices of women in music and music technology today and every day. 💪 This post is just the beginning of our series celebrating women in music and music tech. Stay tuned as we highlight our women faculty and the impactful work of our student organization, @gtwimt .
