Completing a full circle with this activity!!😀😀 Had stored the dried twigs of the red oak leaf lettuces from last summer, prepared a pot and just sprinkled these crushed dried flowers on top, covered with a very thin layer of soil and dry mulch!! And lo!!! Teeeenyyy tinyyyy little roundish leaves started popping out all over the pot within a week😘😘😘😘 The pot was bursting with red headed saplings jostling for space within a span of 20 days😀😀😀 . Hurriedly ordered a couple of shallow long growbags online and prepared the beds for transplantation. . Ever collected basil seeds? 🧐 The idea came from a recent book I read by Joanne Harris, BlackBerry Wine and I am going to try it. 😊 This is a cinnamon basil and it has indeed a very spicy taste. Apparently you can keep harvested seeds for a long time. First step is drying the basil flowers…. BlackBerry Wine is an excellent read by the way!

Seed preservation step 2. Now that all the seeds have soaked and the viable seeds have sank to the bottom, we scooped out all the floating non-viable seeds and debris and strained the good seeds out. Time to freeze the beans. I like this color palette we’ve got going here! From top left, clockwise: -Runner bean, probably “Streamline” -Beefy Resilient Grex Bean -Kentucky Wonder probably crossed with something -Violet’s Multicolor Butterbean. I freeze dry beans for two weeks or so to kill any lingering pests that may be inside ready to eat their way out and destroy my seed stock. (Sounds gross and it is, but also they have their place—if you know it tell me please. That’s garden life.) To do this, make sure your beans are completely dry. You can smash one with a hammer and if it shatters it’s dry... I prefer to just let mine dry in shallow vessels for several weeks. Use a container with a tight seal such as a mason jar, label with the date, and freeze for two weeks. When you remove it from the freezer after that time, do NOT crack the lid: leave it to thaw while tightly closed and you won’t have any moisture problems. Then you can store them however you like to store seeds. Seed folks: did I miss anything?

Marvel Of Venice Yellow Pole Bean🇨🇦 https://seedsofimbolc.ca/.../marvel-of-venice-yellow.../ Sweet, flat, yellow beans are ready to pick early in the season and continue to produce until frost. This Italian heirloom has 20-24 cm. long, 2 cm. wide beans on vigorous vines. It is really early, producing lots of delicious, tender, yellow wax beans. They are beautiful, flat, long beans with a rich buttery flavour and lovely soft yellow flowers that also remind me of butter. Romano type beans are a form of flat snap bean which originated in Italy. Like other snap beans, Romano beans are supposed to be eaten whole. They are considered ripe when they make a crisp “snap” if they are broken in half, and they have a very mild flavor and a tender texture. These beans are often braised with other summer vegetables and eaten as a side dish, and they can also be added to soups, stews, stir fries, and assortment of other dishes. One of our Club members purchased seeds for Blackberry Lilies (Iris domestica) on a visit to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s garden in Charlottesville, VA. It was reportedly his favorite flower. She had a successful crop, but forgot to take a photo of the flowers in bloom. (The first photo is borrowed from the Monticello catalog.) The next two photos, taken by our Club member, show the late stages of the flowers, including the seeds that resemble blackberries, but are inedible. Now she’s wondering about the best way to dry these seeds for planting next year. After a couple of days post coronavirus lockdown, we bought a good quantity of vegetables of indigenous variety from the nearby village Batkari. Many of the farmers were unable to sell their produce in the market because of the lockdown and hence we were able to buy them at a low price. Some of the brinjals that we had bought were overripe. We decided to make seeds out of these, and thus made slits on them and hung them for drying. We put three different varieties of brinjal for drying. I still have quite a bit of Broccoli in my garden. The plant that just keeps on giving. I grow the local plants I buy @marshallsfarmstand every year. You can put them in early like end of April and I have had them till November. First Harvests in June and then keeping picking the broccoli shoots and don’t let them go to flower. Once I picked Broccoli for Thanksgiving Dinner! I am think about dehydrating some but today my dehydrator is filled with herbs. I made a basmati rice last night and put in some of my dehydrated mixed herb and it was so delish! I am even dehydrating my celery leaf from the celery plants. It is so lovely when used as an herb. Please note the seeds on the mint plants, I will be harvesting the seeds and saving for next year (I store in an old envelope) and boiling the rosemary stalks and a few leaves to make Rosemary Water. In Olden days Rosemary Water which is slightly anticeptic, was used for cleaning, also used as a hair rinse, or you can do what I do, put it in your evening bath for a super fantastic herbal bath. I pair it with some Epsom salts. The oil in Rosemary is extremely good for your skin.
