. Give it up for the grand entry of Brassica oleracea in our harvest diary!🥳🥳🥳🥳 . I was given a couple of two leaf old teeny tiiiny saplings of cabbage in December last year. One fell victim to HH’s frenzied diggings (she loved scratching garden pot soil😌) but the other somehow miraculously survived😀😀 . The sapling grew from strength to strength adding a new leaf every week to her vibrant green skirt till march this year! The layering stopped and she just sat there and grew rounder and more dark green then before. She was quite a low maintenance, no fuss gal and all I had to do was water and manure her as the rest of the garden. She was surprisingly resilient to pests or bugs so needed no special care🤝 Finally when all activities ceased last week, we harvested the very first cabbage from our garden 🪴wooohoooo💃💃💃 . Its so tiny but tasted very fresh, crisp and sweet as we added it to our summer salad for lunch (there wasn’t much we could do with it anyway as it was so tiny🤌) . Yes, that’s exactly what I am saying!!🤣🤣 I am still excited even after an year of gardening when something that I so lovingly and apprehensively plant, grows to full size and starts fruiting and completes the cycle!🤌🤌 . Our brinjal journey was a sad one littered with failed attempts to either see the seeds sprouting or seeing them sprout only to witness an untimely death of the young sapling🫣 I played the blame game all too well! So once it was the poor quality seeds, another time it was too little manure, then another death was blamed on overwatering!!😜😜 . Finally, when I had almost given up on seeing brinjals ever in my garden, a tiny cluster of them sprouted in my coriander patch in Sept!! There were 6-7 of them. I hand watered them and waited till they were 4-5 leaf old to gingerly separate them and replant in separate containers 😥The next couple of weeks were nerve racking coz the little ones refused to look up but I persisted with care and finally on 25th Jan a tiny new leaf/bud appeared at the apex of the eldest sapling🥳🥳🥳🥳 That day I knew I had made progress and went about confidently watering, manuring, composting their pots!! Was thrilled with the first beautiful little lavender flower with yellow pollen sacs on open up in March!! . And now we have harvested 3 of these pretty, light green, rounded native brinjals from our garden💃💃💃 . Tower garden is back in business!!! I love this thing but not going to lie it can be a total pain in the arse. I let it sit for too long without breaking it down and cleaning it and what a job… I normally don’t plant this many ports but just going to go for it. Also, I normally cover the empty ports with painters tape but going to try this technique with little red cups. Cannot wait to show you the progress of my lettuce and herbs growing which typically grows 3xs faster than if they were planted outside. I have micro tomatoes, kale, Swiss chard, different types of lettuce, basil, thyme, oregano and parsley in there. Arugula and cilantro attract little bugs that I can’t control.

. Its a yammmy day!!😀😀 . Had planted sprouted tops of purple yam and wild yam last august. The vine grew vigorously and produced the prettiest shiny palm sized green leaves with purplish internodes!! It even twined around the lamp post on the road behind our house. Don’t have a picture of that beauty coz their watchman just snipped off the stem one night as he thought it was a weed 🙁and we woke up to a wilting vine. Same was the story with the vine on the grill (in the picture)!! The next door elderly lady just mercilessly snipped off all the branches as she said they were blocking the sunlight to her yard😣😣😣 Still, after soooo many obstacles, we managed to safeguard the remaining branches for a couple of months but it was as if the vine had lost the will to grow😞 . So we decided to end its agony and harvested what was under. We were actually very pleased to find good sized tubers underneath 😀😀🤝🤝 . Will keep one of each as next year’s seed crop and probably roast the remaining 😀👍 . Small joys bring immense satisfaction, and one such joy is the experience of growing our own food. This practice, once common during our childhood, has become a rarity in the hustle and bustle of big cities and apartment living. However, to reconnect with nature and adopt sustainable practices, we decided to embark on a journey to cultivate our own organic food. In the year 2022, Malama Farms came into existence. The initial period was dedicated to understanding the dynamics of the land, especially with the presence of existing Rubber trees. The deliberation led us to the decision of incorporating a variety of vegetables and fruits into our farm, a process expected to yield results in 4 to 5 years. The year 2023 marked the active cultivation phase, witnessing the magic of growing our own food unfold. The crops, nurtured with nothing but water, sunlight, fresh air, and a touch of love, demonstrated remarkable growth. Our farm now boasts sweet lime, coconuts, star fruit, drumstick, chilies, brinjal, and other seasonal local vegetables. Beyond the act of cultivation, our endeavor is a small yet meaningful contribution to making our world a better place. By embracing natural practices and savoring the fruits of our labor, we hope to inspire others to consider sustainable and organic approaches to food production. Completing a full circle with this activity!!😀😀 Had stored the dried twigs of the red oak leaf lettuces from last summer, prepared a pot and just sprinkled these crushed dried flowers on top, covered with a very thin layer of soil and dry mulch!! And lo!!! Teeeenyyy tinyyyy little roundish leaves started popping out all over the pot within a week😘😘😘😘 The pot was bursting with red headed saplings jostling for space within a span of 20 days😀😀😀 . Hurriedly ordered a couple of shallow long growbags online and prepared the beds for transplantation. . . 🌱🥔 🍠 🥔 🌱🍠 🥔🍠🌱 . How small is small?😜😜😜 I was left wondering whether to label my harvest small or call my potatoes smaller🤣🤣🤣 . The colocasia root was an accidental find!! My little one often sleeps in our backyard under the banana plant. Many months ago I had dug in a couple of dried up colocasia roots along with the kitchen compost. A single leaf had sprouted from that area (you can see the yellowed edges of the leaf next to our snoozing kitty!!). It was there for many months and we rarely gave it a thought. After I don’t know how many months, it yellowed, dried up and disappeared!! We thought the sleeping kitty must have smothered it😜and forgot about it. Last week as I was digging up the soil to bury the kitchen compost, these roots popped up in the soil mound😀😀😀 surprise! ✨✨Surprise!!✨✨ . The potatoes were an utter failure though🤭🤭 Got maybe just 20% of what I had originally sown😜😜😜 Had 4-5 sprouted potatoes in my basket so cut them in half and sowed them with the eyes lightly covered, in the hope of atleast a kilo of an harvest🫣🫣 But this is what we got🤣🤣🤣just 5-6 teeeeenyyy tinnnny baby potatoes (actually they were much much smaller than even the regular baby potatoes 😬😬)!! I listened to whatever anyone had to say, in the vain hope of seeing the seeds sprout and produce leaves 🍃 🌱rubbing the seeds between your palms and sowing- tried and failed ✖️ 🌱soaking them overnight and sowing- tried and failed ✖️ 🌱halving the seeds and sowing- tried and failed ✖️ 🌱Rolling them under the sole of a leather chappal and sowing- tried and failed ✖️ 🌱so on and so forth😜😅😅😅 . This time I just drizzled the seeds right out of a store bought packet that were leftover after I had used them for a chicken dish that I was cooking that day and MAGICCCCC 🪄 💫 ✨ The chaos gardening saw results on the fourth day!! with teeny tiny leaves popping out of the soil in the entire basket😀💃💃💃💃 Thrilled, I got another packet of the same brand and this time planted them in neat parallel rows. They sprouted too🥳🥳🥳🥳 It truly has been a fulfilling endeavor, culminating with the harvest yesterday!! . 💚Harvest Diaries!!💚 . Its always exciting to add a new entry in our harvest diary😀 and this time the new guy on the block is our very first DRUMSTICK 🥳🥳🥳🥳 . We had gone through many rounds of inflorescence of this 5 feet tall gentleman but all it did was bloom and wither🙁 But finally a scrawny little snake like stick began to form. Oh! To watch it grow and become almost 2 feet was a pleasure 🤩 But honestly, the flower to fruit ratio is absurdly skewed😂😂 coz I guess, after maybe a couple of hundred flowers, ONE drumstick is all we got😅 But quality over quantity!!! So happpy happppy😃 . Mom picked my giant squash on Tuesday night before the snow came so it is nice and safe in the house now. It is almost as big as my head! The internet said to leave a bit of the stem on and put it in a sunny window to finish ripening. It is a little green on one side so we are going to wait a bit to cook it. Oh and it weighs around 8 pounds. Butternut squash sells for $1.99 a pound so I grew a $16 squash. Herfst. Tot nog toe zwoel. Maar nu toch echt wel steeds wat kouder. De bladeren van de bomen verkleuren rap. De meeste bomen verloren hun blad al. De wintertijd is ingegaan. Meer donker dan licht op een dag. Tijd om de moestuin helemaal winterklaar af te ronden. En de warmte en knusheid van de kaarsen en open haard op te zoeken. M'n haakproject voor de stuga (af)maken. De tijd van buiten aan het werk zijn is bijna over. De seizoenen zijn in Zweden veel meer merkbaar dan in Nederland. Soms voelt het als racen tegen de tijd om alle gewassen klaar te hebben én te verwerken. Want wat was het weer een drukke volle teeltzomer! Maar als we nu de winter tegemoet gaan, de tuin bijna leeg is, de teeltbedden bemest/gekalkt/bedekt, en de natuur rust 'neemt', dan volgen wij en gaan ook een paar tandjes lager leven.
