🔥 Gwen, 2018 🔥 🎞 So a little about the plot … Desperately trying to hold everything together, young Gwen struggles with her mother's mysterious illness, her father's absence and a ruthless mining company that's encroaching on their land. As a growing darkness begins to take grip, the local community grows suspicious and slowly turns on the beleaguered family. 🎞 So what did I think? … This was such a atmospheric and bleak folklore horror, I absolutely loved it! It was a haunting slow burn that delivered a chilling yet simplistic plot. I really felt for the family and empathised fully with their struggles. Watching the Mum growing more and more exhausted of her families situation made for an uneasy watch in parts. I really felt for the oldest Daughter, she was trying her best to hold it all together but was really struggling. It was really well acted all round and featured stellar performances from the leads. The themes of grief and loss were prominent throughout and it wasn’t always an easy watch. 5* DI Drake is called out to the unexpected death of an elderly man which at first look does not appear to be murder. But then other suspicious deaths come to light and it seems that a serial killer might be prowling the streets of North Wales. This is a real page-turner with plenty of twists, and an excellent police procedural where we get to follow the case in detail from start to finish. The characters are all skillfully drawn, and it has been great to see how they have evolved from the beginning of the series. Drake is quite a complex character who likes everything neat and tidy, though his OCD isn't quite as severe as it was, possibly due to the fact that his personal life is happier. He does have a new boss, though, which adds to his stress. A Cold Dark Heart is the eight book in one of my favourite series. It could be read as a standalone, but best read in order so that you get to know the characters. 🐑 The Dark, 2005 🐑 🎞 So a little about the plot ... Adelle's efforts to fix her relationship with her daughter turn tragic when her daughter disappears. Adelle meets a girl who claims that her daughter has been taken to the evil underworld. 🎞 So what did I think? ... I liked this one. It had a pretty good premise and eerie plot. Although I did find myself a little lost at times, even though it all worked out in the end. The strained relationship between the Mother and Daughter was evident from the get go and there was clear tension between them. The resulted in some cheesy dialogue and interactions, which could have been better directed and portrayed. I enjoyed watching this unfold and the explanation for this. I really liked the setting, aesthetically it looked great. I like the contrast between the light open spaces and the dark Annwyn scenes. The idea of ‘Annwyn’ was a a creepy concept and almost felt like a sort of purgatory. When he returns home he learns that his sister is being held for ransom by a religous cult on a remote island. He decides to infiltrate the cult but soon realizes the island isn't what it seems....You don't really see many horror movies where the protagonist tried to blend in with the bad guys and I really like how it was done here. 💀The island itself is very creepy but in an enjoyable way due to the era being the early #19thcentury w/ the world barely starting modernization. 💀The story is a slow burn that's worth the wait once the third act kicks in. It takes it's time building the story of the cult & the island which I really appreciated. 💀It wouldn't be a cult film w/out some really disturbing moments & there are no shortages of that here. Coupled w/ amazing practical effects & you'll be cringing at every bone crunching moment. 💀The main hero is as smart as he is cunning. His character is developed really well through flashbacks and some tense moments that have you worrying if he'll make it out alive or in one piece. 💀💀💀Overall I really loved the film & would consider it a hidden gem among the modern day world of horror. Apostle - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Apostle is set in 1905 and tells the story of Thomas Richardson who sets off on a dangerous mission to rescue his sister who has been kidnapped by a religious cult located on an isolated island. I love that Netflix keep bringing us really smart horrors that dont rely solely on jump scares but are held together by solid scripts and great performances. The story does get slow in parts and does run for a hefty 130 minutes.
