Homicide: New York is easily one of the best true crime related limited series I’ve seen Netflix release in the entire time it’s been around. That is high praise coming from myself as they seem to do a new true crime release every week, if not more. This is 5-episodes of some of the most shocking murders ever committed in NYC, and I didn’t know about a single one of them. Episodes Ranked: 1. Central Park Slaying 2. East Harlem Serial Killer 3. Midtown Slasher 4. Carnegie Deli Massacre 5. Vanished on Wall Street The murders here are brutal and disturbing. I’m not talking about just your average shootings or stabbings. I’m talking about people being gutted and left in Central Park. The rape and murders of young girls. This stuff actually shocked me and the violent and savagery of these killings is worth the 4.5 hour investment and binge. I thought this was truly one of the finest true crime shows I’ve watched. Dick Wolf of Law & Order fame is the creator of this thing, and it shows all over it. There is an actual production budget behind it. The series also shows the toll that it takes on the detectives and those who show up to these crime scenes. It felt like we were getting both sides of the crimes. Victims, families and those who are sent to protect us and solve our murders. Like Dog Soldiers, but replace the setting and the werewolves with super-human alien-humanoids. Thats not to say this isn't a good film, quite the opposite actually. Marshall once again finds a great mix a horror, action, humour and some wonderful on screen deaths and SFX (the soldiers jaw being ripped off, a terrorist de-faced and punching a soldier straight through the back of the head were highlights.) Cast were great (big-up the Welshman and his comments about JPR Williams!) and the monsters were fantastic. Good creature feature thats worth checking out; not many being released nowadays. #WhatJenniferDid (2024) Director: Jenny Popplewell Writer: Jenny Popplewell Cast: Jennifer Pan Review: The biggest positive I can say about “What Jennifer Did” is that they did this as an 87-minute documentary feature as opposed to a 3-part limited series which Netflix seems to have a habit of doing. Even then, this feels like they are struggling to fill out that 87-minute runtime with case facts and evidence that were presented in news clips, interviews and police interview room footage. It’s all there in the title really. The title alone lets you know that Jennifer Pan did something. So, from the outset, it lessens any of the twists and turns of the case. Maybe marketing this as the next “American Nightmare” which actually had some jaw-dropping moments that I didn’t see coming made me only dislike this more, as they continue to layer on these shock allegations, but we know it was still Jennifer all along that was involved. Strick parenting, kill-for-hire and wanting to secure your parents life insurance isn’t anything too out there in terms of true crime stuff. Also, Jenny Popplewell’s previous true crime documentary, the upsetting and angering American Murder: The Family Next Door is a vastly superior and more shocking documentary than What Jennifer Did. Here we have this calculating woman who wanted to get rid of her overbearing parents, and that’s about it. Also, the fact that they used AI to try and make her seem happier in photos is a big “YIKES” when she hired people to brutally murder her parents. I just remember always liking the sequel more, because it is the movie I remembered more. All of the classroom stuff, I thought that was always a lot funnier. Yet, rewatching it for the first time in a decade, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit did not hold up as well as I remembered. I was actually kind of surprised by how average it turned out. Let’s start with the music. Something that made the original and was the basis for most of the story. In the sequel, I couldn’t tell you one song that the nuns or students performed. With the original, I still burst into song and sing I Will Follow Him some 30 years later. That’s how much I loved the music in the original. Here, it’s uninspired and unmemorable. Also, a lot of the humour and jokes fell flat. The dated Yo Mama jokes were CRINGE! Maggie Smith continues to add some class to the sequel. We have the addition of James Coburn and Michael Jeter. Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena still do their best to elevate the material. Lauryn Hill, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Jennifer Love Hewitt are here in the supporting roles. Rewatching Sister Act for the first time in close to a decade, I forgot how much fun the original is, and how great the cast is here. It’s like watching two polar opposite talents play off each other. Maggie Smith as a straight faced English nun trying to control Whoopi is a joy in its own right. Then you have the infectious spirit of Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena. Then Harvey Keitel being the villain just gels so well together. The laughs fly quickly. This is such easy viewing. It brought me back to being a kid, when I first watched it with my dad. I sort of miss seeing Whoopi Goldberg in movies. The fact that she was such a star of her time and now sits on a panel on The View seems wasted of her talent. A mix of gangster movie meets comedy musical.
