What You Need To Practice Yoga Nidra It is recommended that anyone practicing wear light and loose clothing, consider removing jewelry or hair accessories that have the potential or distract or disturb you. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had several people tell me some version of, “wow, you are glowing,” “your energy feels so light,” “you radiate.” It surprises me each time it happens, and yet (simultaneously) doesn’t shock me. My energy *does* feel light… to me too. My mind is light. My heart is light. My anxiety is low and balanced. My body feels strong and healthy. I really feel at peace. Why do I feel so good? Probably a couple reasons… 1. I have been fiercely committed to my daily sadhana (pranayama, mantra, asana), 2. I’ve swapped out most alcohol (tho not all) for fresh juices, cacao, and yummy prebiotic bubblies (I’m currently obsessed with poppi sodas), 3. I get 7-8 good hours of sleep each night (thank you binaural beats), 4. I spend a couple minutes each day listing out as many things that I’m grateful for, as fast I can, 5. I prioritize rest by actually taking the breaks scheduled on my calendar, throughout the day, to calm my mind, stretch on my mat, and to generally recalibrate when work and life get too intense or overwhelming, 6. I’ve allowed myself to lean into the scariness of courage, and consciously make decisions that put my heart, my values, and my work in alignment with one another. It allows you to control your motor movements, retain memories and regulate your emotions. It also allows us to receive sensory signals from our environment, amongst many other things. One of the ideas that we have stressed continually is the complementarity of Ayurveda and yoga. While many take to yoga before encountering Ayurveda, it is actually meant to be the other way around. Immersing oneself in Ayurveda leads to a fuller and more fruitful engagement with yoga. In other words, if you want to get the most out of your yoga practice, learn the principles of Ayurveda and incorporate them in your everyday life. And most importantly, go for a panchakarma. It's probably the single most important thing that anyone can do for his or her health. While I love to read and share about philosophy in yoga, I have always been intrigued by the science behind the practice. Recently, I’ve been reading a lot of academic articles and I thought I would share a few insights with you 📚 Woodyard (2011) states that consistent yoga practice can lead to significant increases in serotonin levels coupled with decreases in the levels of monamine oxidase, an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters and cortisol. Why is this important? 1️⃣ Because the breaking down of neurotransmitters prevents overstimulation of neurons and prevents conditions like anxiety and depression. 2️⃣ Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Chronic elevated levels of cortisol can lead to negative health effects such as impaired immune function, weight gain, high blood pressure, and increased risk of chronic diseases. Every movement we do and any sports we engage in will demand some requisite range of motion at certain joints. So flexibility is an essential component of all movements - being flexible is not about being ultra-bendy (unless your profession is an acrobat😅) There are different ways of working on one's flexibility, in which the targeted muscles are stretched in different ways: 🔶️ACTIVE or PASSIVE tells us whether the muscles are contracting or relaxing respectively. 🔷️DYNAMIC or STATIC tells us whether we are moving or not respectively. From these we can work on 4 types of flexibility training: 1️⃣ STATIC PASSIVE 2️⃣ STATIC ACTIVE 3️⃣ DYNAMIC PASSIVE 4️⃣ DYNAMIC ACTIVE (Please see yoga-related examples in the slides) 🌟 We can put the case that a well-rounded yoga asana practice should include components of all these 4 types of flexibility training. A student embarking on the path of Jnana Yoga must initially arm themselves with Sadhana Chatushtaya—the “four means of salvation.” These fundamental prerequisites pave the way for spiritual progress and are essential for traversing the path with courage and determination. The four means of salvation are discrimination (Viveka), dispassion (Vairagya), the sixfold qualities of perfection (Shad-Sampat), and intense longing for liberation (Mumukshutva). These four qualifications are indispensable for any aspirant on the path of Jnana Yoga. Without them, spiritual progress remains elusive. Isn’t it the case that we are constantly trying to fit in somewhere? Squeeze ourselves in somewhere so that we meet society’s standards. This behavior is strongly reflected in our desire to change our bodies. Losing weight, dieting, conforming to beauty ideals. Instead of creating what makes us who we are? A turtle can’t fly either, but it still fulfills what it was made for. And is beautiful as it is. And why do we as humans try to adapt to something instead of listening to our bodies? Because we were told to do so at some point... Instead of living out what we were made for. If we are naturally tall and have a straight build, we can extend this and use it to our advantage. If we are smaller and chubbier, we can turn that to our advantage, learn to appreciate it and build on it. No matter what you look like, the most important thing is to know who you are at your core. And to make the individual, what we are at our true core, to our strength. Anything else means fighting against your true nature. And makes us ill. As yoga teachers we are taught alignment and more specifically, to speak to the placement of the hands and feet. Example…in side plank stack your hand under your shoulder. When we only look at, or cue the hands or feet, we miss the importance of what is happening at the core of the body. What is happening at the core influences the position of the hands and feet, not the other way around. We must learn to work from the inside out and from the proximal to the distal. This requires us, as teachers, to know the actions of the muscles and not just the visual alignment of the bones. I worked with a client today who felt they had no balance and couldn’t do one legged poses. Did I teach alignment- no Did I go through a bunch of modifications - no Did I have them do it over and over again to get stronger- no I spent 5 minutes teaching them how 👉🏼 distribute weight into the heel 👉🏼 engage the arch of the foot 👉🏼 contract the calf 👉🏼 isometrically hold the quad and hamstring equally while also keeping the knee at a 5-10 degree bend 👉🏼 contract the glut without squeezing the butt checks together 👉🏼 do the movement pattern of contract in to extend out AND….just like that they could do all the one legged balancing poses. Was it easy, no. Will they still have to work on it, yes. Are there skills work needed to improve these movement patterns, yes. But the problem wasn’t their body, their abilities, their lack of focus or any other mindset yoga philosophy. They just needed the light “turned on.” You can cue alignment and what to do with body parts all day long, but if you don’t teach HOW to do the what, they are just fumbling around in the dark. I'm a funny mix of masculine/feminine, magic/science, mystic/practical situations. I love having faith in the unseen world of Angels and Synchronicity, Serendipity and The Universe... but smash those things into evidence based science shizzle? To quote Wayne's World Campbell "SHA-WING", lol. One of my biggest struggles is letting my thoughts and feelings control every moment of my life; I can go from "I'm amazing, my life is magical, so effing blessed!!" to "nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I'm going to the garden to eat worms" in the blink of an eye. And the truth is; most of what I let my head take me away with is untrue and limiting beliefs meant to distract me from the discomfort of growing into a bright ball of shiny Authenticity. Guess what? That's the truth for you too. Magical thinking; "your heart is stronger than your head. Trust your heart." Scientific proof: "your heart is FIVE THOUSAND TIMES STRONGER than your brain magnetically speaking, and ONE HUNDRED TIMES STRONGER energetically speaking. The heart actually sends far more messages to our brains and throughout our body than the brain does, it "thinks" and has neural tissue... Trust your heart." So.... the next time your brain is taking you out for a spin. Stop. Close your eyes. Draw all of that negative self-talk and anxiety inducing worry into a ball and imagine it sliding down into your heart ~ and let your heart tell your brain to "shut the eff up!". After so many years running teacher training programs online (which I’ve loved, btw, because it’s brought together a hugely diverse group of nationalities and given access to people who couldn’t otherwise get it), I’m REALLLY excited to return to in-person teaching later this year at the beautiful @theshalalondon studio here in south London. Last time I held this in-person, the world was a pre-Covid one and everything seems so long ago, so different. I was a brand new Yoga Educator at that point and excitedly nervous about whether I’d get the timing right with fitting the content into 2 days, whether I’d be knackered by the constant talking or even if people would understand what I was chatting about. I needn’t have worried because I remember fondly the energy of being in a shared, attentive, gloriously supportive and curious space with every one of the participants and coming away from the weekend feeling such a high of achievement and connection. Tadasana 🏔️ This standing pose is essentially the anatomical position. It represents how you hold yourself in the world, your postural alignment. The pose creates a stable connection to the earth. Many muscles are slightly engaged to support you upright, resting gravity. #yoga #scienceofyoga

Yoga affects the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, the peripteral nervous system, limbic system activity, inflammatory, and endocrine responses. This leads to physiological changes in the body. These changes include the reduction of blood pressure, blood glucose, and cortisol levels which results in the reduction and alleviation of stress. Yoga stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system which is the relaxation response. Worth to nature eavesdrop & have a sniff ☺️🙃 If you’ve ever smelt a bag of supermarket bought rosemary or packaged dry bay leaf and then had a chance to smell the same herb grown in the garden or out in nature, you’d see the difference is phenomenal :) And beside having a fresh & free zing in your cooking, we also stimulate our psychology. Studies have shown that inhalation of scents and listening to a source of water in nature affects our physiological responses = neurotransmitters go nuts for it & help us chill, lower blood pressure, pulse rate, muscle tension and even brain activity.
