I picked up these books after seeing them in a YouTube video. I've only read the first two out of this trilogy but I'm looking forward to picking up the third. I thought the first book was captivating but I guessed a lot of the plot points so gave it 3.5 stars. X-Men- Whatever it Takes The story sees Storm fall into a trap from the evil Shadow King. I like this story as it gives us a good look at one of the fan favourite characters’ backstories. Storm’s origins aren’t something that we’ve seen very often so it’s interesting seeing how complex her beginning is. I like how the story ties into Professor X’s past, seeing an old enemy of both him and Storm return. The story also allows Storm to feel like a more complex and tragic character, through her connection with Mijnari. The side plot of the story is also really engaging and entertaining, seeing Wolverine hunt down his old friend Morph and help free him from Mr Sinister’s influence. Shadow King is a great and underrated villain. His design is nightmarish and terrifying as he appears as this scary, devilish face. The way he also possesses people, flying around like a ghost, just makes him more creepy and dangerous of a threat. His inclusion allows for some really good twists to the story with the inclusion of Storm’s son, it’s just a shame we don’t see him again. The setting of the story is really good, the way the story explores the planes of Africa and Storm’s old villages look so well detailed and vibrant. The animator did some brilliant work at bringing this story to life. Even the other locations like the astral plane and the jungle in the side plot looks great too. Vow of the Shadow King 💎👑👰🏼♀️💙11/10 Clearly I couldn’t wait long to dive into the next book 😂 and I once again consumed it in a day. And here I thought book 1 was a slow burn…. Nothing in comparison to book 2! I absolutely loved how fast paced the plot was in book 2, but man did it completely destroy me at times too. Everything from book 1 is totally amplified in this book and the ending…again NOT where I expected it was going. If there’s one thing I’ve grasped from these 2 books is Sylvia really knows how to A. Suck you right in that you can’t stop reading until you finish. B. The ending feels like there’s still so much to happen (cause there’s another book duh) so you just have to keep going and don’t stop C. The slow burn ?! Oh man. It’s perfect! And D. I enjoyed this. Much like the first issue, the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona vibes continue to be felt; going to school, doing social tasks, and a new character joins the party in Maystorm! A young girl with air and electricity based powers. She seems a bit eclectic and eccentric, but I'm sure has some kind of dark past under her carefree attitude. The girls respond to the note Armour received at the end of the last issue, and attend the abandoned school. We also get a surprising reveal about Shadow King. Slower, simmering burn issue, but not dull nor filler, and the gorgeous art and intregeing characters absolutely pull you along in a vice grip. This is definitely the most deviated from the 616 6160 story, which I feel is a good thing, clearly avoiding the pitfalls of 1610 from Ultimates 3 onwards, or 6160 Ultimate Black Panther seems to have stumbled into. Anyone can jump on without needing any prior reading to enjoy a new, fresh, and enjoyable darker-themed story, illustrated by one of Marvels top tier artists. Just finished the Bride of the Shadow King series, but first let’s talk about this set from Illumicrate (which I believe is still available). Sprayed edges, beautiful end paper character artwork, but super cool and something I didn’t notice until they posted, they freaking glow in the dark! 😱 (second slide). I enjoyed this series, but I’ll be honest that I got a bit frustrated/over it with the third one. It got very narration heavy and there was part of the story line that I felt the majority of it wasn’t needed; I get WHY it was in the overall story, but there was a lot there left unexplained and I was really over that aspect of it and wanted to move on. I wish we could have explored a few of the side characters more because I found them to be very interesting, as well. I liked the FMC, especially when she started to come out of her shell, and enjoyed the dual narrative between her and the MMC. I liked the MMC, but also felt like there were times where personality didn’t quite fit with how I think he was supposed to be portrayed on the overall series. 45 left and we're given the unstable anti-hero, Legion. First appearing in New Mutants #25 (March 1985) created by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz as the lost child of Charles Xavier. His mother, Gabrielle Haller was a patient at a psychiatric facility that Xavier was working at in Isreal, and she did not inform Charles of their child. It wasn't until a terrorist attack in Paris that claimed the life of his godfather that his psychic abilities manifested, leaving him catatonic for years. Recovering at the Muir Island mutant research facility under the care of Moira MacTaggert, his abilities did manifest a form of dissociative identity disorder,with each alter manifesting their own mutant abilities. At one point Legion was possessed by the Shadow King, and before being freed, he destroyed 2/3 of Muir Island. Separating from the Shadow King left Legion in a coma once again, for a number of years. X-Men- Till Death Do Us Part Season 2 opens up with Cyclops and Jean Gray on the run from the deadly Mr Sinister. This new series opens up with a bang, introducing us to one of the best X-Men villains around, Mr Sinister. The story is also good as it does a great job at exploring the dynamic between Cyclops, Jean and Wolverine. The story explores their complex love triangle in a really good and dramatic way. It also makes Wolverine seems like a tragic figure by exploring his intense jealousy over Cyclops as well as his rage over him. Mr Sinister is the perfect villain, he’s terrifying, calculating and manipulative and as his name suggests, sinister. The he coldly plans out so many steps to his plans , presents his intelligence really well. I like his plan too, he’s a geneticist and he wants to create the perfect mutant for him to control and through Cyclops and Jean, he can create than mutant. I also like the way he manipulates every character, getting rid of Professor X and Magneto, the biggest threats to him. Trapping Cyclops and Jean Gray and even using a tortured Morph for his goals. The side plot of the story sets up the tenseness of the series really nicely with the Friends of Humanity group working to frame mutants for a series of attacks. Seeing them pretend to me be mutants and attack the president was really good. We also get another plot involving Morph, a character from the pilot story who the team thought was dead return to life. Mutant Muir Island Melodrama! The era of the X-Men when the world thought the team was dead (but, in reality, , they were hiding out down under in the Outback), was a fun one. As far as serial soaps go, this period really dug into a TON of weird plot lines (many of which got scrapped or changed by editorial decisions). Most interestingly, it seemed a lot of the secondary mutants were being put together on Muir Island, where Moira MacTaggett was secretly possessed by the Shadow King. According to what I read over the years, the Muir Island X-Men were meant for more, but basically got folded into the new Mutant Genesis plot lines where the Blue and Gold teams formed. I loved seeing these characters together, even if they didn’t get to do very much overall. From my experience, this story is one of those that will consume you till the end because you will have so many questions and will look forward to receiving answers and explanations. 🗡️👑A young girl wakes up in the winter forest not remembering anything about who she is and how she got there. Terrified, she wanders across the forest until she stumbles at the warrior who introduces himself as lord Alexander Rhemus and claims to be her friend from childhood. He also says her name is Norah and she is the future queen of Mercia. And there the story rolls into a long process for Norah to learn all over again about life at the royal court, about politics and enemies. The Kingdom of Mercia has been at war with the Shadow King for a decade. The people of Mercia hate the very idea of his existence, yet Norah gets a chance to get to know the villain of the story from an unexpected side. I have to say this trilogy is a rare example of creating such complex characters whom you will no doubt change your opinion if you pick these books. There is also a clash between cultures on the borderline of unacceptable, and I liked how the author walked that thin line throughout her story. ❤️ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬: I loved the fact that apart from a good fantasy, this trilogy gives you the incentive to think about some fundamental questions regarding differences between traditions and customs between different countries. 😄 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬: none 💁🏻♀️ 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭: A guidance “How to become a queen”!
