MIKAN Mikans (Japanese tangerines) are not just the gems of winter’s fruit. Yes, they are delicious and are filled with necessary vitamins and minerals but they are also greatly more meaningful. At the end of every year in late December, my wife and I visit our family in the North. This is special because this is the only time of year when our whole family can get together. During this festive time, everyone gathers around the family table and tell stories of their accomplishments, adventures and even failures that were experienced during the long year. The stories are greatly entertaining and not an ear is distracted. Eventually, the stories of past turn to the future and some relatives express with delight how they’ll master their universe in the following new year. As you can imagine, I’m quite guilty of overly declaring my plans of future escapades. While everyone is listening or in full conversation, Mikans and sake are shared and enjoyed in awesome abundance. Whoever is talking is also slowly peeling a Mikan and all those who are listening are following suit. In fact, I can’t imagine the dinner table without a glorious basket of Mikans being passed around from story teller to story teller and from listener to listener. Each state is incredibly unique and includes cities, iconic pop culture references, historical facts and a lot more interesting goodies and I hope you enjoy them all. __________________________ The States Project 2023 “Johnny, what’s the matter with you? Why on earth are you not actively promoting your painted states?!” Earlier this year, a friend texted me the above after he purchased one of my STATES… Well, it’s been over 10 years since I finished painting each American state and although I didn’t forget about the project after it was completed, I didn’t really think about it until I read his text. And he was right. I needed to revisit The States Project, it had been way too long. I immediately dove into my art storage and found the old crate that contained TSP, and to my delight, every single state still looked just as marvelous as the day I laid them to rest. I then broke out my camera, tripod and other art nerd equipment (yeah, I’ve been known to geek out once and a while) and feverishly began to shoot each state and digitalize them for the world to enjoy. And at last, after countless late nights and an ocean of coffee, I bring you the STATES PROJECT of 2023! __________________________ A little bonus history, each American state was hand painted on high quality canvases (1m x 1m) then digitally mastered and now they are yours to collect and enjoy!
